I'm sorry you're having problems. While this can be caused by the .avi or .mp4 file itself, importing problems like this are more commonly a result of a 3rd party install or uninstall messing with the DirectShow filters on your system. DirectShow is one of the multimedia subsystems in Windows, and the filters are the splitters, decoders, and other video processing components that are part of this system.

Since this type of problem is often machine dependent, the best way for us to help you is for you to visit http://support.techsmith.com and see if any of our knowledge base articles can help you solve the problem. If not, please submit a question on that site, and someone from our TechSupport staff will follow up with you by email to help troubleshoot the problem further.

Hello,
I want to update this thread with some new information pertaining to this issue. We have just released Camtasia Studio 8, which has been rewritten from the ground up for better performance and stability. A lot of the ways things are done behind the scenes have changed with this re-write, and we think there is a pretty good chance that this problem has been fixed in Camtasia Studio 8.

I would definitely recommend downloading our free, fully-functional 30 day trial and trying this again on the new version. The trial version automatically upgrades project files from older versions and makes a backup copy of them just in case.

You can download the trial of Camtasia Studio 8 here: http://www.techsmith.com/camtasia-wha...

There are plenty of other new features in this release that you can check out on our website as well.

Thank you again for your feedback!

Nope. Version 8.4 does not permit me to import MP4 files either. So as I record with my video camera, the files are AVCHD Video (.MTS). So all need to be converted. I use Handbrake as suggested on your site. But still Camtasia v8.4  does not see the files. So I'm stuck. $329 later and can't import and edit a video.
One last thing. The 300+ page Help PDF. Is all messed up too. The Table of Contents don't relate to the page numbers Look at Page 66 Importing files. It makes no sense. Maybe someone thought no one would actually read it. But I need to since I can't get the program to import video files.

Update. Problem solved. Here's how. Installed software provided by camcorder (Sony), used their codec conversion then easily imported the files into Camtasia v8.4.  Also changed a setting on camcorder to produce only MP4 to simplify life in the future.

suggesting you solve the problem by buying a new version isn't helpful.

I have the newest version 8.4. And I can't import MP4 video files. I have converted them using Handbrake as suggested by Techsmith. I see the files in the folder, I've verified they were converted to MP4, but when attempting to import, Camtasia V8.4 can't see the files. Refreshing does not work. My PC is Windows 8.

I can import MP4 and Avi files into Camtasia 8.4. without a problem.
I'm running Windows 8 as well. You probably shouldn't need to convert anything at all.
At least I never have and I have been importing MP4's and Avi files into Camtasia since version 7.
Maybe a repair or reinstall can cure your problem. Sometimes missing a widows update can throw Camtasia for a loop also.

Regards, Joe

Thanks Joe,
It turns out my files are AVCHD Video (.MTS). So I convert them to MP4 using Handbrake. I see the files in the folder, confirmed they are MP4. But Camtasia can't see the files. So I can't import them. When I type the specific file name into the field, Camtasia v8.4 tells me I don't have Directshow. So now I downloaded that program too. Still I can't get Camtasia to import a damn video file.

Nadia, you can download older versions from this site: http://www.techsmith.com/download/old...

I'd recommend downloading version 7.1.1, as this is the latest version that your license key will work with, assuming that you purchased version 7.x.

Hope this helps.
