I WANT "FOLDERS" VIEW BACK!

This conversation has been merged. Please reference the main conversation: Folders view is gone in Library V11.4.

I find the new 'Library' view very difficult to navigate. I hope enough people complain about this to warrant giving back this functionality. Generally, I have no problem remembering the name I gave a file and where I put it. Now you want me to remember what program I was using and on what date so as to find my files.

Me too!
Noticed bbroyles reported it already (with your comments)
see " View Just Folders in Beta?"
In the editor I could quickly jump between editor and folder contents.

Right now I have a library with thousands of screenshots, that donot exist anymore because they have been relocated.

Am not interested in the library. At least SnagIt should have added an option to have the folder tree available.

I hear you. Most other software I have had experience with recently that offer a library view also have a folder view so it is your option how you navigate.

I am going crazy trying to deal with this.  I have hundreds of .snag files in folders for training manuals and updating them is now EXTREMELY cumbersome since I can not preview the file before I open it in browse.

I used the folders view repeatedly throughout the day and am frustrated that the feature has been removed. Between the time it now takes to locate the images I want and to recover from the almost daily crashes, I am seriously considering reinstalling version 10 or finding another editor.

Maybe, just maybe, they will re-introduce it in the next update. As for me, I can live without the 'improvements': close to none of the list suggested improvements materialized. Like 'Rulers' (horizontal/vertical, optionally floating), like: rotating pasted captures, without having to flatten them first, like: rounded corners, like: user defined zoomlevel, like,like....
So, I went back to 11.3
(oh, remember to disable Program Preferences>Update options>Enable automated update checking)

OK, are you guys kidding me? No exploring your folders, just thousands and thousands of pictures I have to go through??? Really???? Get real guys!

I'm currently looking for pictures taken in 2006 and need to go through the whole library one by one... gimme a break! It's starting to look like Yahoo, where THEY will dictate to you which view you like best!

Have you tried finding a Word file without using Windows Explore... all files are in a flat library??? I challenge you to tell me which program does not use some king of explore with folders to find a specific file.

Why don't you leave well alone and strip us of certain functions? Bring it back... PLEASE!!!!

I decided to add my post here because I was getting no feedback.  Maybe SNAGIT Techs will get the hint.

In v11.3 and earlier, there was a Folder and Tab key within the search panel. This Folder tab is now removed in 11.4. I have used Folders at both my home and work computers to view SnagIt files that were manually moved from a different computer and subsequently stored onto the C: drive or a shared folder. I had the best of two worlds, being able to view, in the Editor, the SnagIt defaults files and the files in the external folders.

When I moved to a different computer at work, I saved the whole snagit folder to a server, mounted the server to my new machine and was able to instantly view in Editor, those files.  I could then toggle back and forth to look at my other projects.  11.4 allows view a list but not an Editor view of these files for quick searching

The new 11.4 DOES allow searching for Folders, on my C: drive, to find a SnagIt file to open. However, 11.3 or earlier, allowed VIEWING of all the files within the folder, where the new 11.4 can only view the list of the file.  These SnagIt file are encrypted with your naming convention and I only see a file list and not the Editor files themselves. I can pick a file but I don't know what it looks like. The viewing of these in the Editor view of the multiple Folders was great on 11.3. I could Edit or modify as needed. I did not necessarily want to just merge the files from the 2 folders into the SnagIt Default working folder. It worked GREAT before 11.4

I realize that schema updates, where files stored in older versions of SnagIt, may not be available to be opened in newer versions. I also know that I could save capture as a *.snag file and give it a cryptic name that I could recognize and store them into usable folders.

Why did SnagIt remove the folder option. I don't want to go back to 11.3 if I can help it. Maybe add it back to v11.5? Bummer!

After sooo many complaints, I am sure they will re-introduce it with v.11.5
Timebeing I can only suggest to go back to 11.3.
I checked which -new- 11.4-features I would be missing when going back. None.... i.e. 11.4 did not bring me features that I was really waiting for. Instead, it took away something that I always used. (Folders). So, for me, back to 11.3

Folders no longer available in Snagit 11.4 from Library.

I'm going to add my voice here for a return of the Folders view. I have thousands of images in SNAG format on a network which I used to rely on the Folders tab for access to. Trying to see them in Windows Explorer is impossible because Snagit doesn't offer image previews in Windows Explorer (a feature that I have requested many times). I can't use the library view because my library only goes back to Sept 2012 (when I got my current computer) and many of the images were created years before this, or by colleagues. So I have no choice now but to rely on the fact that I use a sensible filenaming and folder strategy. But this makes what was once an efficient workflow completely broken. Techsmith, for the first time ever you've disappointed me.

Check if you will be missing the new 11.4 features, if not, I would go back to 11.3.

I reinstalled 11.3 and have not missed the new features in 11.4. Some were handy but, even as a group, did not provide the value to me of Folders View.

I am actually wondering now who beta tested 11.4. Did none of the testers decry the loss of Folders View?

Please keep the new 'Library' view but add a FILESYSTEM TREE NODE!
It should be very easy to implement. Of course the filesystem treenode should list only the images/videos in the Snagit database in a tree structure.

I prefer the old Windows Explorer folder view that was in the previous version (11.3.) There was nothing wrong with it, I don't know why it would have been removed. It was the only way I searched for files. It allowed me to find files saved from a camera or e-mail attachments that were sent to me and then alter them. These types of files are not included in the SnagIt database unless they are first opened in the Editor. Explorer-type view shows me everything.

Could you please post a screenshot of this "old Windows Explorer folder view" in Snagit Editor? I don't remember it. Thanks.

Had to work at it because the SnagIt editor window disappears while doing a capture. Windows Snipping Tool has a use after all. Folders and Tags in the left pane, library in the right pane.

.

This is Version 11.2.1 which I have on my laptop. 11.3 was virtually unchanged here.

David, is not your display a 11.3 version.  If you select a SnagIt stored folder or a new folder that only contains some *.SNAG files, you should see thumb nail pictures in the Editor.  This is what we want in the 11.4+.  See my note below.

No, it's not. I checked the version number before I took the snip to be sure. I have 11.3 on my desktop. I've owned versions back to 8 or 9. I don't have any '.snag' files except for what came with the software. I always save image captures as '.png' or '.jpg' files. Occasionally I will save a capture as a '.pdf.' I never leave a capture with the filename provided by SnagIt. I guess I should have picked another folder so you could see some files and previews. For the record, I don't have a problem with the 'Library' view. I just want 'Folders' tab back in the search pane so I can search my way, via folder names, not their way, via dates and applications.

David you are correct in that the folders seem to always be there up to v11.3.  Got lost in 11.4.  I have gotten lazy and have left files in the original form.  As Peter Ban below says, Explorer does not have a "handler" to recognize the *.snag files that the Old SnagIt Editor Folder did for viewing or editing.  My generic Snag capture files go to this Snagit default folder as *.snag files which I sometimes save as .pdf or jpg before sending.  I have other capture folders, sitting on my C drive or a mounted drive, from previous computers that I would like to view/edit but cannot with the 11.4 or 11.4.2.  I agree that my way would be great.

On another note, Using the Snipping Tool. There is a way to do a SnagIt Capture of a previous capture without getting the editor screen to disappear.  Try

http://screencast.com/t/2vt2fkwOVR9. Go to tools/program preferences/ and uncheck the "hide SnagIt before capturing.

I'm wondering if SnagIt folks are taking an interest, because I'm still at 11.4 and the 11.4.2 does not look better for folders.  I have not gone back to 11.3 because I want to see their newer "go forward" tool.

I always thought that setting was for the main SnagIt window, not the editor. I had never tried it. I tried it and it worked perfectly. Thank you.

I found that posted on a SnagIt Video help site while poking around looking for some stuff about SnagIt 11.4.  I'm still having problems with the reduction of Styles for the drawing tools.  They reduced the number of fixed items but hey, this should be talked about in a different thread.  Did find a video on how to create and save a new styled icon.

I wanted to send Snagit a picture of the lack of folder option but could not take a picture of the different panels.  I too used the free snipping tool located in the Accessories start folder.  Used this at work till I got SnagIt....now everyone uses it.

The "old Windows Explorer" folders tree allowed you to traverse and see folders stored on your hard drive or any mounted disk.  The files in these folders are generally *.SNAG files and when the folders are "selected", under the SnagIt Editor, small ThumbNail displays of the *.SNAG files appear in the Editor.  This is what's important inorder that the *.snag files appear in an Editor form that allows retrieving or modification.  11.3 worked great.  When 11.4 came out, IT BROKE!  I too have files from other previous computers that I just stored into individual folders onto a server.  Having just Explorer, only lets you view the file and details and unless you saved the files while in Editor with a real true name, SnagIt just appends a date time-stamp.

Also being able to sort by the Application that originated the capture is great.  I'm not sure how to manipulate these after the association is made on the original file.  I can see that if your current computer has applications, like Office or AutoCAD and you wanted a Capture, the current loaded SnagIt can associate and organize under these programs, BUT, if the files are in a mounted folder, not sure where it gets the underlying program info.

Any associated file type will show a thumbnail in library pane, not just .snag files. One exception is .pdf's which show a generic icon in place of a thumbnail.

TechSmith should provide a PREVIEW HANDLER for .SNAG files! This would allow to preview .SNAG files in Windows Explorer thumbnails.

What is a "preview handler"? A preview handler is a custom system component which tells Windows Explorer how to display file thumbnails in order to show their file content. This is what a software engineer calls shell programming. It is not very easy, but a software engineer should be able to do this.

A bit disappointed to see that Techsmith folks donot care to comment as to if/when they will re-introduce folders view.
