Image capture doesn't work

I can't do a screen capture.  I followed the instructions here to make PrintScreen go directly to image capture instead of bringing up the stupid image/video toolbar (who came up with that monstrosity?  just shoving more useless steps in my workflow).

Now when I hit printscreen, I get the selection tool that highlights the part of the screen/window to capture.  So far so good.  Only half the time it gets stuck there.  I click the mouse button and nothing happens.  It doesn't take a screenshot.  It just stays on the highlight tool.  A popup appears in the corner that says "Click an arrow for scrolling capture.  Esc to cancel, F for fullscreen, F1 for help."  No dammit, I don't want scrolling capture.  Just take a damn screenshot of the area I clicked!  Clicking again does nothing.  Can't make it take a screenshot.

For god's sake, just do what I told you to do.  It's not that hard.  Worked fine under the old SnagIt.

Any suggestions to fix this braindead behavior?

Go to the presets and chose the one called "image" and see if that does it for you
Assuming that gives you what you want, assign it a hot key and it will always do that since printscreen seems to invoke the last used profile i.e. panoramic

If you accidentally get into panoramic again, the easy way out is to start it then stop it and it will give you the screen in the editor. where you can pull the borders in to crop out any extra it grabbed

I don't know what Presets means.  I saw Profiles -> Capture Profiles -> Image.  Selecting that makes it worse.  Not only does clicking bring up the same "scrolling capture" dialog, but now it always appears.

Maybe I'm in the wrong place.  Can you explain more what I'm supposed to do?  Thanks.

Well I finally figured it out.  For anyone else who runs into this problem:

Go to Manage Profiles per the link above (if you turned off the damn always-hovering "Capture Window" then you have to right click the teeny tiny notification area icon for SnagIt.  This is apparently the only way to access the multiple different configuration areas: profiles, preferences, editor settings.  Ugh what an ungodly mess.  Could this interface be any more confusing?)

Next to the place you change the hotkey for your profile, there's a box called Selection.  Mine was set to Scrolling Window for god knows what reason.  There are a dozen inscrutable options in that drop down.  I set mine to Region.  God only knows what the others do.  That seems to give a mostly good result for me.

Why do we need so many different unexplained settings buried deep in the bowels of the interface where no mortals will ever find them??  This interface is atrocious.  A complete mess.  It's a SCREEN CAPTURE PROGRAM.  It should be dead simple.  This monstrosity can't die quickly enough.

ONE MORE THING.  I wanted to post a screenshot of the manage profiles window to show people exactly what to do.  EXCEPT I CAN'T.  When you start a screen capture, snagit's manage profiles window disappears!!!  So it's impossible to take a screen shot of the settings window in a SCREEN SHOT PROGRAM.  What a farce.  Eat your own dog food, SnagIt!
