Impossible to import Audio .m4a from Camtasia to Audacity

Hello,
I would like to turn some videos I created into .mp3 audios. So I extracted the audio in Camtasia but the only format provided is .m4a and Audacity can't open it, so I cannot convert it into mp3.
Is there any way to do it? I really need my audios to be .mp3 audios; I can't use them if they are .m4a.
Thanks in advance for your help.

If Audacity won't accept m4a extract them from Camtasia as .wav
I'm sure that Audacity will work with .wav

See image, I created a new one. I had one for Camtasia 8 but figured it was time for an updated version.Camtasia 8 could export mp3's. How's that for ironic.

Thank you Joe for your answer ! The thing is... When I do it, the only choice provided by Camtasia for an audio extract is.m4a. That’s the problem. I will check again tomorrow but after doing it three times, the only possible choice was .m4a... I will try again tomorrow and I’ll tell you. Thanks!

What the format of the video? There are many programs, even free, that will strip the sound track off any video and convert to any audio format you like. So rather than converting the M4A, strip the audio from the original video without Camtasia.
I've used NCH's "Switch MP3 Converter" which is fast, free and versatile.  See:

with your video, with audio, on timeline ...

share menu/export audio

the file picker gives you the option to set file type as wav or m4a

M4a files open fine for me in Audacity. I'm using version 2.3.0

The problem you may be having opening M4a files in Audacity is that you probably don't have two required libraries installed in Audacity.

For the M4a files you need the FFmpeg library

And for Audacity to produce mp3 file it needs the Lame library

They are simple to get and add.

In Audacity go to the Edit menu then Preferences...

In the preference window that opens navigate to Libraries.

There you can download them both and then locate and add them to Audacity.

I recommend getting them if you will use Audacity much. They will be needed for different reasons in Audacity.

Did you click the download button shown in the image I posted?

It may be that the Audacity Help file is missing from your installation.
Thats where the buttons pull information to download from.

Here is the direct links to the downloads and installing info

Dubie, I was about to write out my over-long explanation of how to get m4a into Audacity and you saved me a lot of time!

Here are a couple of time saving tips.

You can drag and drop your .trec or a mp4 file onto Audacity and it will extract the audio in the file and put it/them on track(s) in Audacity ready to edit.

That said you still need the libraries above that I posted about.
