Improve block malicious spam.
E.g this email heading was sent to me.

Question: How to conquer Price Manipulation issues for Gemini?
It had a phone number in it and a heading with a link.
What does this have to do with techsmith?

Hope you can improve your forum filters.

The only way to improve the filters is by switching to a different form software.  The getsatisfaction platform that TechSmith uses has no spam filtration.

The TechSmith team try to identify spam, take it down and block the account as quickly as they can but they're not in duty 24/7.  You can report new spam by grabbing the URL of the offending piece and adding it to the end of the "Report Spam ..." thread, which will help bring it to the attention of the moderators.

Thanks Paul for the reply.

Techsmith really like to make things hard for themselves.
I had a look at the link you supplied.

I'm  not going to bother.
I have good malware etc on my computers so I'm hoping it will save me if I happen to follow a link when I'm half asleep at the keyboard.

The discussion about being free therefore can't complain doesn't really apply as a malicious post will affect the person or persons who get that email.  (Joe)
As you pointed out you can't block it because you will block relevant emails.

I wonder if Techsmith becomes liable if they send malicious emails to forum users that destroy / damage their files/computer?

The USA I believe love litigation, might be a good reason to update the forum software!
Just Imagine a Corporation being attacked due to an email from Techsmiths forum software!

I totally sympathise.  Their get out, by the way, is that, technically, it's not they that send you the mail but getsatisfaction.  if it's any consolation, I have this problem with other software forums too.

Hey damianrx, the following comment.................

The discussion about being free therefore can't complain doesn't really apply as a malicious post will affect the person or persons who get that email.  (Joe)

You couldn't of gotten that any further out of context if you tried. I had several posts in that comments section. That was actually part of an ongoing conversation/disagreement between me and Paul. I'm pretty sure moderators remove some of them because they will do that.

If you look at the very top of the thread. Paul's first response was....... Just ignore them, the moderators do delete them.
He acknowledged their a nuisance but he was basically saying live with them. So I disagreed with his position 100 percent and had several back-and-forth posts with him over it.

So I can see why you might misunderstand what I was saying.

When several comments are added directly to the same poster under "Comment". Rather than showing all of them and having them scroll all the way down the webpage. The forum will compress them down into a view previous tab. And you can totally miss several of the responses previously posted.
I think a lot of people are unaware of this or look right past it accidentally.

Under that tab you would find me complaining vehemently against this nonsense of improper moderation  to contain spam.

My underlying post was as follows.

Yes were getting a bit over run with Spam these days.

Heres the part that kills me about it. There's really not that much of it.

Get Satisfaction needs a moderator to approve posts from new users. Problem solved.

Adobe forums don't have this problem. I got frustrated when moderators didn't post my questions right away. Sundays were the worst time to ask a question.

After asking a few questions. You gain their trust and you can post questions immediately.

Then I added an image, moderators took another look.Delayed my post, made me mad.

But you know what, No SPAM, no Nonsense on the Adobe forums. They run a pretty tight outfit.

Get Satisfaction??? The website goes haywire for days, no explanation for strange e-mails popping up in my in box. A regular Wild West of WTF happened and the answer is.
None of your business.

So I just wanted to clear that up. I think spam is huge problem that will never go away. The reason being it's the platform Get Satisfaction that has to resolve it.

The free comment had something to do with my vision of an excuse for doing nothing about it. From TechSmith's and get satisfaction's point of view. Meaning that the forum was free so therefore somehow we should tolerate it's inadequacies.

Regards, Joe

And please bear in mind that Joe and I agree more than we disagree. But the world would be a very boring place if we all agreed.

@Joe Morgan @Paul

Guys I can see you are both power users and understand forum issues etc.
No intention to insult either of you.

I just believe it is unacceptable for a company that wants to charge ongoing maintenance to have such a poor excuse for a back end forum system.

They need to step up and get it sorted.

@Luke you sent through a reply while I'm writing this.
Same thing Techsmith needs to lift their game.

I won't continue in this discussion as it is out of our hands and as I said in a previous post I am going to let the spam just pass through.

Paul and Joe and the other report spam page gave me the insight to not bother.

Thanks for your input.
Damian.

Hi,

The software used to power this forum is made by GetSatisfaction, not TechSmith, so they are the ones who would have to implement changes. It looks like we can request that here https://getsatisfaction.com/corp/help-center/submit-ticket/. This forum does have spam flagging, but that requires someone from TechSmith to go through that list after the fact and remove the posts (which we have been doing), but that unfortunately doesn't prevent emails from getting sent to users like you.

Hi Luke

So what are you going to ask them to do?  My money's on new accounts have their posts held for moderation until they have achieved trusted status, as Joe referred to earlier.

I'll have to talk it over with some other folks internally, but I do like Joe's idea since in my experience, most of the spam posts are from first time posters.

I could be wrong, but I think I need to correct slightly what Luke said- GetSat *does* automatically filter spam out, then additionally they do as he said and flag things that are suspicious (we review them before they go live), and then there are some that don't get flagged at all, but we notice them, and delete them.
There was a time before GetSat had implemented all of this, and I can tell you, there was so very much more spam. While I personally only see it occasionally at this point, I sympathize with those who would rather see none at all, or feel that too much is still getting through. So, we appreciate the feedback on that and will continue to monitor it.
