Improve Voice Narration Panel - Have Source Selection Visible Right Away

This suggestion may be related to my particular hardware, but the following situation is a problem when recording in Camtasia Studio:

Whenever I plug my headset into my desktop machine, my Realtek audio driver connects the microphone and provides it as avaliable input source.

Whenever, however, I unplug my headset from my desktop machine, my Realtek audio driver disconnects the microphone and removes it from the list of available input sources.

I guess this is a quite common situation, but I wouldn't tend to implicate this.

However, whenever Camtasia Studio is started while the headset is unplugged, it automatically (and silently) selects my line in as recording device.

If I then plug the headset into my front audio panel, Camtasia Studio does not revert its automatic selection but keeps the line in as it's voice recording source.

I - as the user - don't tend to put my focus to which audio recording device is currently selected. I only see - and this is my problem - this rather empty and unsuspicious Voice Narration panel:

I don't put too much attention to the volume slider as it hardly shows any activity during my recordings anyway. And, moreover, I'm focussing the playback of my visuals while recording. I'm not following the volume indicator.

So this is my problem:

It happens to me more than once in a while that I perform a perfect voice narration just to finally detect that I didn't record anything at all because the microphone was not selected by Camtasia Studio as the audio recording device.

It just isn't visible to me when recording.

To check whether I would have had activated the right input audio device I first need to awkwardly open the Audio setup wizard (although I've set up the audio many times before, so the name is irritating) and select the audio source there manually:

To me this just does not feel right:

There's an empty voice narration panel, hiding away important information. And I need to actively check for the correct audio input device to be selected instead of having Camtasia Studio select the appropriate device for me.

I believe, a number of things should change:

  1. Camtasia Studio should display the currently active audio input device right from the beginning in the Voice Narration panel. This is basic recording information that should be visible right away.

If you are going to amend this panel, don't just show the device name but provide a dropdown list in order to be able to select the right audio device right there.

  2. Camtasia Studio should recognize when audio hardware is hot-plugged, i.e. added or removed. And it should then automatically select either (a) the default recording device, or (b) the default communication recording device, if available.
This would greatly improve audio recording and give less frustration to recording audio with Camtasia Studio.
