Snagit is a great little App - but I wanted to find out if, or how, I can do a couple of things that it appears Snagit will not do.

1. There does not appear to be a way to take a screenshot or make a movie recording of Snagit's Edit or Preferences windows. It would be handy to be able to do so, especially when working with your tech support people, or when demonstrating Snagit to someone else.

2. I noticed in the Snagit Editor, that if I drag a tool or stamp item, or another screenshot image into a screenshot, that when I try to apply a filter by selecting callout items and clicking a filter 'the filter gets applied to the underlying screenshot item, and not to the selected item(s) on top. You should fix this.

Or are these possible now?
Please advise.

Hello Mr. Hall,
Thank you for the feedback and questions.
1. Yes, you can change an option in Snagit located in Tools > Program Preferences > Program Options:

2. You are correct, we apply the filter to the underlying screenshot. The workaround is to apply the filter to the image before dragging it to combine with another image.

We appreciate your feedback. Please let us know if you have any more questions.
Thank you,

Hello Tiffany. I would like to chime in here and add what I found when I tried Step 1 from Mr. Hall.

1. I was able to take a screenshot of the SnagIt Editor and SnagIt Tools>Program Preferences like your attached screenshot.

A.) The only thing here for doing that was to have the Capture type set to Region so all the images and Preference box would fit into the screenshot or the SnagIt Editor screenshot(s).

B.) When trying to Record the SnagIt Application itself it worked to a point. That point being showing the Menu bar and settings like in your screenshot. Once again I used the Region Capture type setting for that. However it does not let you actually video record taking a screenshot of something for example a website image etc. or other things. That is because when doing video capture with SnagIt it is already in use. So for showing the SnagIt Editor with video it would work but, to show the SnagIt Application itself on how to use it it would not work with captures. Correct me if I am wrong but, that is what I found out and know when I tried.

In my opinion or my suggestion would be to use Jing Free for now until TechSmith does away with it. Then you would need Camtasia Studio to do video captures to show how to use SnagIt Application. Does that make sense at all? I hope so. Thanks for posting Mr. Hall and Tiffany correct me if I am worng or you have a better way of accomplishing this task. Have a great day.

Hi Fred,

You are correct.. if you are using Snagit to record a video, then you cannot use Snagit to take a screen capture at the same time. This is because only one session of Snagit can be running at one time.

So, Jing is a good option for recording the process of using Snagit to take a screen capture.

I should mention here that Jing Pro will be retired in one year. Jing will not be going away.
