Is there a way to pause narration recordings?

I am doing my narrating in Camtasia 8 separate from the screen recording. Is there a way to pause the narration proces while I am recording the narration?

I realize there are audio recording software products that do this but seems like that would be a given in Camtasia. Who can do a 5 minute narration without pausing to gather their thoughts.

Was going to download Audacity but that site has Malware Warnings poping up all over it. To bad, because I was used to using it on one of my old (now dead) computers. Any free programs like Audacity that your using that you could suggest?

I think the problem is, when you pause, the video would also have to pause as well. If you click on the video pause while narrating, nothing happens, you can not pause it during recording narration.

I guess one could use Audacity to record your narration, just start recording and play the video at the same time to stay on sync.

Just a thought.

Re: Narration Pause
I was talking to tech support, they have plans on implementing it. No word of when.

I havent encountered this yet...because im so new to Studio 8...BUT YES!

YES, I would also need the ability to hit a PAUSE button when I am doing a narration track. I would have assumed that that little feature was a standard function. Please add it if you would.

Your best bet is by recording your audio with Audacity, which gives you total control of your audio. Have used it for years, with no complaints.

Audacity is a multiplatform, open source editor and completely free. It is a trusted application and was developed by a not-for-profit volunteer group; anyone can use the source code anytime to study or use. There are times that virus checkers would report false positives for the Audacity installer for Windows (.exe). The reason for this is the installer is compressed. It is recommended that you download the .zip file instead and check for viruses.

Audacity is good. However, the video portion of Camtasia Camera Capture lets you pause your screen capture any time you want by hitting F9. Why would there not be a similiar feature for voice only narration recording to the timeline. I gotta go look...I cant believe its not there...its such a no brainer to have a Pause Button when you are doing voice track recording. Especially in voice recording...you need a Pause Button. Audacity is fine...but its 5 extra steps to get your track done...would rather have TechSmith provide it seamlessly.

Well I won't hold my breath, but I'll be looking forward to it. There's no reason with a little investment why they can't isolate the tracks for video and audio, controlling the video and pausing the audio together. What would also be ideal is if they can add Notes like in captivate, so you can write a script and read as your recording the audio, while watching the video. I work with both captivate and camtasia, and let me tell you, being able to read from a script while recording audio and watching video would make camtasia that much better to work with.

I was told to stop recording, save then start a new one. Too much work, I just make one thats good for production and if there is an annoying "umm" in there, I just leave it. I find it very hard to get a perfect voice narration. I seem too have one blooper in them. Some go 100% but most are 90% good.

As long as the people watching it can do what I told them, thats all that matters.

But a pause button, when I feel myself start to go brain dead (forget my lines, or getting really nervous that I am going to make a mistake) would be awesome to pause it. And then continue after a deep breath.

Another idea is to simply "take a pause" during recording ... meaning, keep the recording rolling but, when you need to, pause, look over notes, clear the throat, etc. Then, edit the pauses out in while producing. This is done all the time by professionals in Hollywood, as in ".."keep rolling, take two, we'll edit out later". As long as your screen doesn't change and mouse is in the "same" position, it won't be noticable. Just a thought.

I would be content with just the Pause Button F9 when recording audio narrations.

They have it already in the Screen Capture Module for Screen Recording of Video and Audio. You would think that the line of code they already have... would port over quite readily.

Ah ok, interesting solution, thanks. Am surprised that this doesn't exist on Camtasia though given the price tag...

Pause Voice Narration.

Even though I have created a script prior to voice narration in Camtasia Studio, it would be really nice to have a "Pause" button so I can clear my throat or take a sip of water without have to save the .wav file and then start another narration.  This would avoid me having a folder full of .wav files that I then have to piece together on the timeline.

I would like a Pause button for voice narration..

When you record screen captures, you can use the pause button to stop and start. I usually do voice narration separately. I'd like a pause for that feature as well. Sometimes I need to just stop for a minute to avoid ambient noise or because I am gathering a thought.

try this technique; it allows a narration to be paused & restarted any number of times ...

It's a good idea to use the recorder but my company won't allow that as it's not clear enough narration, they can hear pops and little stuff that normally doesn't get recorded or gets edited out if I use just a Vocal Narration.  So i've been told i can't do the Recorder option.  With that in mind they need to add a Pause button to Vocal Narration. I don't record video then narration.  I record narration first then video that way my video lines up nicely with my narration and nothing looks like I'm lost, just in case I do get lost.  So my wish list item would be a Pause button during vocal narration

since you want to make audio before recording the video, suggest you use free Audacity to record the narration

I don't want to use a seperate program, I want to use the one my company pays for.   I want the program that we pay for to have that function in it.  I shouldn't have to use a seperate program that isn't made by them.  That's the whole point of the thread.  Not how to do it with some 3rd party freeware program, but why isn't it in the program already?  I mean you pay for this so why can't it do this.  You can do it during video so why not during narrration?
That's my point.

your "wish" is quite valid, it has been expressed by many others, including myself,  many times; I'm sure TechSmith is aware of it

FYI, Audacity is a great tool; it has many advanced audio editing functions that are never likely to make they way into Camtasia Studio

Audacity makes voice narrations, with pauses and corrections, extremely easy to accomplish; you might want to give it a try

it outputs WAV files that work great on the CS timeline

I would have to agree with kayakman. I too have wanted this option in Camtasia Studio but Audacity does offer more for quality of sound and editing the narrations. Just my opinion and if TechSmith added this option it would just probably be the capability to pause and restart the voice narration and the editing capabilities would not change from what they offer now.

Yes, we need Pause in the Voice Narration area! What possible reason could there be for _not_ having it?
