Jing & Windows 8

I downloaded Jing, but no sun ever appeared on my desktop. I have Windows 8, is this the problem? A progress bar went to 100% then a Windows installer window only gave: click OK as an option. There was no "Install", "Next", "Finish" process like when normally installing software. What can I do to get Jing to work?

Hi Carol,

Thanks for the question, and sorry for the trouble with getting Jing installed. The latest version of Jing is compatible with Windows 8, so I don't think there should be any problem there.

Once you have downloaded the "Jing.exe" file and double-click it from your downloads folder, you should be presented with this window: http://screencast.com/t/2ZQoY4Znmo5. Clicking the "accept" checkbox and then "Install" should kick off the install process.

If you're running into a different situation, let us know and we'll make sure we get you up and running.

Thanks,

Jason

If it doesn't automatically run, simply start it from your Start Menu/App Page. If you don't see the tell-tale sun on your screen, check the task tray. If it's there, it's running, simply click it, click on "More", click on "Preferences" (denoted by the cogs), then uncheck "Hide the Jing sun".
You can then move it wherever you want it

I'm having the exact same problem but with Snagit that I just purchased. "A progress bar went to 100% then a Windows installer window only gave: click OK as an option. There was no "Install", "Next", "Finish" process like when normally installing software". Is there a link you can provide for Snagit just like Jing? Any idea what's causing this?

So, I am trying to help someone who has a laptop running Windows 8 who is having the same trouble as the others here, and she does not get the dialogue window mentioned in your post, Jason. I see you have not answered here. Did you abandon this thread? And you are support, right? What is the answer?

I'll jump in here since Jason is out on vacation.

@William: we do have employees that attempt to monitor these forums and respond to questions. To get in touch with our TechSupport staff directly, you need to visit http://support.techsmith.com and open a ticket there. This will put you in direct contact with our TechSupport staff. Someone will respond to you by email to help troubleshoot further. This is probably the best way for us to help with install issues, as they tend to be machine specific. These typically require one-to-one support, which we offer (for free) through the http://support.techsmith.com site.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, your post is what was needed in this thread to help people like myself/my friend get some direction with this. Not responding as the other individual did can't help but appear as being abandoned.

Although his response above worked easily with a 32-bit machine, her 64 bit laptop was not getting what he described.

I have the same exact problem described here. I have a 64-bit Windows 8 laptop and I can't even install Jing, as it immediately sends me to a "Windows Installer" window. Has there been any solution to the problem?

Make sure you run the installer with Administrative privileges. Right-click the installer, then click on "Run as Administrator"

I am running window 8.1, on a new laptop and jing seems to have installed, but as soon as I try to run it, I receive a notification, "jing has known compatibility issues" there are options to get help online that yield no results. I am in GIS and use jing often.  Please help.

Faith I am not sure what GIS is but are you using the latest version of Jing? I also use Windows 8.1 and I have not received this message. Are you getting this message every time you try to start Jing ? If so does it do the same after a reboot of the computer and have you tried uninstalling Jing and doing a Reinstall? Let us know and if none of that works for you then I would suggest contacting TechSmith Support and asking them. I have provided the link and information below for you.
