keystroke logger needed in Snagit

I am trying to troubleshoot a problem for my 82 year old mother and decided I would try using snagit video capture but as I thought through the problem, I determined I would not get a clear picture of the problem without learning her keystrokes as well.

My mother lives by herself in another state about 800 miles away. She has a new Windows 8.1 HP computer running Office 365. She hates it  as she was used to her Windows 7 computer. For the past month or so, she will attempt to send me an email from Outlook. She will type her message and then try to correct spelling, etc. When she is ready to send, she hits send but then she gets this strange message "The operation failed. The Messaging interfaces have returned an unknown error, if the problem persists, restart Outlook"

At this point, she is locked out of her message and nothing works except to close all Windows and reopen Outlook and retype her message. I have tried to explain things like copy, paste, undo, etc but to no avail.  I have worked with her computer remotely for hours and find no problem sending messages but I can leave her alone for 10 minutes and she has it locked up. So the other day, I had Teamviewer open and talking to her as I watched her try to do things. Well, immediately, I saw that she had opened 2 instances of Outlook. I thought that was her problem and tried to tell her the proper way to use the icons on the task bar vs the icons on the desktop. We thought it was solved but the problem was back the next day when I remotely turned my back on her for 10 minutes.

So I thought, well I'll install Techmith snagit on her computer and set it up to record a video session. That sounds great but I don't know of a way in snagit to record her keystrokes. I need video and I also need all of her keystrokes.

I see that Techsmith offers a product called Morae that sounds like it offers everything I need except with a hefty price tag which is not appropriate for this particular situation. I have requested a trial and we will see where it goes but I would think Techsmith could offer some basic keylogging capability in the video capture enough to where it would not destroy their Morae product.

Searching for another utility for keylogging is one of those things that can quickly land you on the dark side of the web so I'm trying to exercise caution.

Also, if anyone has seen this particular problem and has a solution, I'm all ears.

Thanks,

Rod

Hello there,
I think you are going to like this. I created a video too cover a lot of details. It's a keylogging feature that also captures Images at the same time. It built right into Windows 7 and 8.

Joe,

I love it. Thanks for reminding me of something I had seen in passing years ago in Windows 7. I had forgotten about it AND I didn't know if they had taken it out of Windows 8.x. I just logged onto her computer this morning and did a couple of test runs. She has a dropbox folder that is shared with me so I just configured the output file to go there. That is perfect and hopefully it will uncover the problem.

Sometimes, we see these solutions without an associated problem and years later run into the problem but forget about the solution. You are a genius!!!

I just set the keystrokes to 999 and left it running. Hopefully, when she gets up this morning, she will go to her computer and I can discover something.

I'll update later with how this went.

Well, I put it on my mom's computer and like the old cliche, a watched pot never boils and a watched clock never moves, she was doing everything "perfect" after I started the steps recorder. However, today, she calls and said it did it again. I I have the file but have been way too busy to look at it. Actually, I am flying out there tomorrow anyway for other issues but I'm anxious to look at the file. I will try to keep you posted.
