Snagit — Allow creation of custom flags and renaming of existing ones. Keywords are fine, but one-click flags would be more useful if we could rename them and create our own.

Hi Mike,
Thanks for posting and sharing this feedback. We agree this would be nice. Would you mind sharing just a bit more about how you use tagging and the keywords? I'm curious--how did you discover flags and keywords, and was there some event or instance where the value of this part of Snagit "clicked"?

Thanks for taking the time to post!

I am a consultant and work with several customers and have standard items that I snag. The custom, one click flag is idea for standard snags. Everytime I try to add one keywork, the window closes, so to add 3 standard flags is 6 clicks and 6 mouse moves. Also, you try to get creative so the ones you use most are at the top.

Very inconvenient and inefficient. Not to add annoying. Great product. Use is all the time!

So Bug/Error is my Research Tag, Funny is a customer, Personal is a customer,

Mike Curtis, thanks for the response. I use Snagit every single day to grab images and illustrations I use on blogs and websites I maintain for others, and in the creation of custom graphics as well. I might capture 25-50 images in a day and keyword them POLITICS, HUMOR, ECONOMICS, HISTORY, GANGSTER GOVERNMENT, etc.It would be nice to have one-click flags that we can name and color for broad categories like these, reserving keywords for subdivisions of the larger categories, e.g,, flag: POLITICS keywords: CLINTON, (OBAMA, BUSH, BLAIR, etc.)

Hi guys,
Thanks for the follow up!

I completely understand the flag request, but I'm really curious to learn more about the keywords.

I can't replicate Daniel's workflow where the keyword window goes away. Any chance you can send a video or some screen shots about what's going on there? I don't think what you're describing is intended behavior. I like your idea, Mike, about using the keywords as more of a sub category. Currently the two things (flags and keywords) are completely independent.

Thanks again for the feedback--please keep it coming!

When I snag an item. When I add key words, I can only select one keyword at a time and then the keyword dropdown window closes. Then I have to click keywords again to open it up to add the second keyword.

Should the window stay open while I select multiple keywords?

Keywords and Flags don't necessarily need to be connected; my way of using them isn't affected either way. I guess I only mentioned keywords because I have to use them instead of flags because, without being able to create custom flags, without being able to rename existing ones, I have to use keywords exclusively. The names assigned to existing flags aren't useful for me. So I don't use them at all. The idea, for me, is that flags are one-click and visual, while keywords aren't.

I think what Daniel is referring to when he says that the keyword "window" closes is describing selecting existing keywords from the ALL KEYWORDS drop-down, where you can only select a single word, then have to click the drop-down again for another. Every keyword selection from the drop=down is a two-click process, so adding three keywords is six clicks. (Was going to Snagit that for you, but I can't figure out how to use Snagit on a Snagit window!) :)

The closest example I can think of to illustrate a good implementation of flags is in Adobe Photoshop Elements. You can create flags, iconize them, use them from a palette, etc.

Thanks, Mike, for listening to us!

Custom tags would be huge for me. I create training manuals/LMS/PPTs and use Snagit to gather and annotate imaged for PPT and WORD based docs. Relabeling tags for me would allow me to use words like: "IS Manual" "DM Manual" "CRM Manual" "CRM LMS shots" etc

I realize the ribbon width would likely need to be extended, biut there is real estate available since Keywords, Flags and Details sections together do not extend to the end of a typical screen.

Custom tags would be very useful! In fact, if this was in SnagIt 11, I would upgrade immediately!

Tags and keywords have different applications, and satisfy use cases where they can be used together. The visual indicator in the library browser in nice.

Take a look at the Tags feature in OneNote 2010. It is well implemented, and easy to customize.

Consider this case:
1.) Use keywords to categorize related images for a project that may be stored in various folders.
2.) Use tags to flag status - in work (needs to be edited), released (ready to use), used (embedded in a document), to delete, etc.

I have been using the standard tags, but for purposes other than their name would indicate - even allowing the user to rename them would be a good start.

Custom Flags is vital for me. We are a software development firm. We have a need to flag designs for all sorts of reasons. Bug/errors and Sent are the only ones that fit neatly.

Using keywords is good if I want to categorize, but is not useful for tracking status.

Are you considering this option? If so, do you have an ETA?

I see the topic - but not any resolution! The topic is: Snagit — Allow creation of custom flags and renaming of existing ones. Is this under consideration or has it been included in a new release?
Thanks,
Midge

I am a software consultant for an enterprise software company with a broad suite of products. I do various types of technical documentation, as well capturing errors and tracking status. I love flags as a feature, but agree with those here who would KILL to have them customizable! I am using 12.2 now, and it doesn't seem TechSmith has gotten around to it yet. Please! Please! Please!

I would love to have new flags or be able to change existing ones
