macOS 10.15 Catalina support

Hi Mac Users,

Apple announced their next version of macOS yesterday and we've had a chance to take our app for a spin on it. If you're looking to install the beta, there's a few things to be aware of.

The first thing is you'll need to grant access to Snagit (or Camtasia) to be allowed to capture the screen. Without this access, you can only capture a blank desktop.



Second is folder permissions. In the case of Snagit, accepting this dialog is required to be able to view your library.



Third, the system audio component fails to install. We've notified the third party vendor of this issue and we'll release a fix once we get an updated version from them.

We will be working over the summer to improve these workflows, but for now if you accept these dialogs (or check them in System Preferences), then the rest of the workflows are working relatively smoothly so far.

If you do run into any issues not mentioned here, let us know!

For the most part, it seems to be going OK, but with snagit 2018, every time I do a capture, it crashes as it tries to open the editor.  If I open manually, after the crash, my capture is there though

Thanks! I see what's going on, we'll get a fix for that as soon as we can. In the mean time, this issue does not affect Snagit 2019, so if you have an active maintenance you can upgrade for free.

Hey @luke question - will this patch come over auto updates?

Every time I try to update snagit it tells me 2019 is the latest version.

We've just pushed updates for Snagit 2018 and 2019 with improved Catalina support. If you're seeing persistent crashes on 2018, you'll need to download the 2018.2.7 update from our website.

Good news! Does this fix the system audio recording on 2019. That appears to be the only issue I’ve had.

Unfortunately not, we still haven't gotten an updated version from the company that makes the component. They told us they are expecting to have a fix nearer to the public release of Catalina.

Just purchased Camtasia 2019 on the App store. Using MacOS 10.15, everything up to date on my MacBook Pro. Unable to install the System Audio Component. Install failed. Try again....

Hi Snagit team,

macOS 10.15 Catalina does NOT work with the previous Snagit (Version 3.3.7). Not at all. It removes the image on the desktop and only shows the menu of the application in question.

I cannot record any audio with Camtasia 2019 and Catalina. I tried capturing it during screen record, with a mic and without, also doing voice narration. It looks like it's recording but doesn't capture any audio. The audio bar is jumping up and down picking up volume, but nothing when I start recording.

I just upgraded to the latest Developer Beta of macOS Catalina and it refuses to mount the DMG file.  I get the error dialog below when I try to do so.

Hi,

Yup it looks like Apple turned on the Notarization requirement. Our next updates will be notarized, but in the mean time you should be able to open System Preferences > Security and Privacy > General, and allow apps from anywhere.

Ah you're right, they took out that 3rd option. Odd that the allow button isn't showing up, I have seen that appear for other apps. We should have a notarized update out soon, so I can post back here when it's available. If you need it sooner, we might be able to get you a pre-release build.

You can get around this by pulling up the terminal and typing:
sudo spctl --master-disable

after the app is installed, BE SURE to run:

sudo spctl --master-enable
This will disable and then re-enable gatekeeper.  Be careful with it as you can allow unsafe apps with gatekeeper disabled.

Joshua,  Could this also be used to get around the audio capture component?  As you can see on the string, it fails to install on Catalina.  I'm wondering if your terminal work around above would work for the audio component?

To be honest I'm not totally sure. It might - but I honestly don't use the system audio component.  It really depends on why it's failing to install, which isn't clear from the messaging.

Any update on the system audio component?  that's very important for my workflow.  As another poster mentioned, we expect these things on a Beta, so thanks for your responsiveness.

Unfortunately the vendor that makes the system audio component has said they aren't expecting to have a working version until close to the public release of Catalina. I wish I had better news for you, but if we do get something from them sooner, we'll try to get that to you folks as soon as we can.

Hey everyone :) I set up an aggregate device for Quicktime using information I found on the web. I also conferred with Joe with TechSmith support and verified there is still a way to use Soundflower to record the audio with the screen recording. To use it, I selected the aggregate device in the microphone selection NOT the system audio selection. It worked! Hopefully, it will work for you too.

Sorry about this! We fixed this in 2018.2.7, so you'll need to download that from https://www.techsmith.com/download/oldversions since a crash on launch breaks autoupdates.

We are working on an update to 2018 that will have the system audio fix, we hope to have it out soon. In the mean time if you need system audio, you could use the free trial of Snagit 2020.

I have just installed the latest version of Snagit 2019 on my MacOS Catalina and I am getting a "video capture failed", with the message pointing to an unknown error. I have folllowed the instruction on this post to the letter, but to no avail.

Can somebody point me to a solution?

Apple recently released the official version of Catalina. Has the audio not installing issue been resolved? I received an email saying it should be working again with the 2019.1.6 update but it didn't say if that was SnagIt or Camtasia. Then shortly after I see the message there should be a Camtasia update soon. Can you clarify?

Sorry for the confusion! System audio is fixed in Snagit 2019.1.6 which is live, Camtasia's fix is coming soon.

Thank you for the update. Any idea how soon? I reverted back to Mojave to continue doing the recording I needed to do and really liked the changes in Catalina. I’d like to update as soon as possible.

Hello there!

Using 2019.1.6, just upgraded to Catalina. The Screen Recording tab in the Privacy section is telling me that Apps That Have Requested Access To Record The Contents Of Your Screen Will Appear Here. I'm having a devil of a time figuring out how to get Snagit to officially "request" that access. The System Permissions section of Snagit just has "Edit System Permissions" listed next to the Screen Capture (Required.) I feel like I must be missing something...

Hi christoper,

Sorry about the troubles! One thing you can try is taking a capture with Snagit and then looking for the dialog that macOS presents, this often gets hidden behind other things unfortunately.

I must be lucky camtashia system audio started working for me again last week on Catalina beta release 8. I’m having no trouble recording the screen including system audio on my a MacBook Pro 2018 release. All is functioning as expected .

What's currently happening when I try to take a capture is that all active windows are hidden, and I'm just presented with my desktop, which I can take a capture of. (I mean, it's a nice picture and all, but kinda counterproductive...)

Yup, that's what happens when an app doesn't have screen recording access. I was hoping that taking a screen capture would trigger macOS to add Snagit to that list like it's supposed to. Might be worth opening a ticket with our Tech Support folks to work through this. I'm not sure at this point if it's our bug or Apple's...

today I have downloaded installed Camtasia for mac into my mac OS Catalina but after installation, I see that System Audio was not recording. I have tried to fix but all time I got error that, 
Install Failed . Anyone have a solution then, share with me.

Thx Luke!  If I had known this I wouldn't have been so quick to update my macOS to 10.15 Catalina yesterday. This is a major bummer! I as many have commented use Jing on a daily basis. The simplicity and ease of use are what I like the most.  Are we talking days or months when the new Jing replacement will be available?  Thx!

Hello. I upgraded my Mac to Catalina and have been unable to launch SnagIt -- it crashes before it even opens, so I have zero options to modify settings, etc.  Please help!?

Oh no! I think your best bet is to open up a ticket with our Tech Support, and they can look at the crash logs and figure out what's going on.

I have also updated my system to Catalina 10.15 and now I am not able to record my screen anymore. I have adjusted the Privacy settings, but still have the issue in the recording screen that I am not able to select any source... Do you have any idea what might fail here?

whilst we wait for Camtasia to release an update for the audio plugin, I am using Useloom which seems to have done their homework and is working without issues on Catalina.

Camtasia has been updated with a fix for the system audio issue. It was release in 2018.0.11 and 2019.0.5. I suppose I should make an official reply so it's easier to find.

Hello,

I'm running Camtasia 2019.0.5 (109441) on Catalina 10.5.1.
Camtasia is running but will not let me record video. Per the image attached, video recording tells me "Need Permission" and when I click on the "?", a Camtasia window tells me "Camtasia was previously denied access to record your screen". 

However, when I go to the Privacy tab > Screen Recording, Camtasia is checked. 

So everything looks good from the Mac side, but Camtasia still won't let me record.

PLEASE HELP I can work around audio (Audacity works, e.g.) but NOT video!

I would definitely open up a ticket. FWIW it looks like 10.15.1 update to Catalina resolves this issue. I'd recommend upgrading to that, then return and uncheck and re-check the "allow Camtasia to record" box. Our tech support team is going to have max knowledge on this, I'm only speaking on behalf of a handful of us who have had similar experiences on the product team.

I have 10.15.1 and can no longer load Camtasia 2018 .... where is the issue... Catalina or Camtasia? As in above, I have check all settings. It worked well prior to updating to Catalina, so I am not sure what is going on.

Camtasia does not allow me to record the screen I want. As soon as I say record it jumps to my desktop for some sort of reason. This also happens with QuickTime player. I was with Apple on the phone. The only solution Apple had for me for QuickTime player was to use a shortcut clicking command + Shift + 5 if remember correctly. This will then allow me to record the screen I want. However with Camtasia I tried the shortcut as well but it jumps right back to my desktop. I am not sure if it minimises the page or what is going on. I have been many times with Camtasia support on a chat and no one seems to be able to help me and everyone tells me they not having problems?? It is massively frustrating and it feels that I am on my own planet experiencing these issues. As a result I am completely unable to use Camtasia whatsoever as I have no functionality to choose the perimeters I would like to record due to it keep on jumping back to my home screen each time. I am at the point where I want to put my Mac in the bin and go to the Microsoft store. I have wasted days struggilng with this issue. Can anyone help me please please please?

Hi schalkzeeman,

macOS Catalina added a new security setting around screen recording, so what you're describing is what happens when that permission is not granted. To fix this, open System Preferences and pick Security & Privacy. Then scroll down to Screen Recording and make sure Camtasia is checked.

Is there a shortcut for camtasia like there is with QuickTime Player. With quicktime player I press cmd + shift + 5 and that allows me to select my perimeter of recording straight away on the desired page

By definition then, you are describing an Apple issue, not a Camtasia issue. I have similar challenges with Skype and Zoom screen sharing of multiple monitors, also because of the same Apple issue. Let's try to find a work-around for you.

Assuming you are trying to record a region on a second monitor, here is the process I would follow:
  • Move Camtasia to your Dock. Click this link for instructions if you need them.
  • Unplug all monitors except one (call this A). Record 10 seconds. Make certain you get the exact results you want.
  • Plug in one additional monitor (call this B). Record 10 seconds of material on monitor A. Make sure you get the exact results you want. 
  • Now try every combination of Dock location and Camtasia location to try to record 10 seconds of material on monitor B. Here are some tricks, you may think of  others:
          1. Position the Dock on monitor A. Launch Camtasia from there. 
          2. Position the Dock on monitor B. Launch Camtasia from there.
          3. Launch Camtasia from Dock on A, but move Camtasia to B before recording.
          4. Launch Camtasia from Dock on B, but move Camtasia to A before recording.
          5. Launch Camtasia from Dock on A, but move Dock AND Camtasia to B before recording.
          6. Launch Camtasia Recorder from Dock on B, but move Dock AND Camtasia to A before recording.
Please report back the specific results of all 6 numbered experiments above so we can help you. Also tell us your monitor configuration, and if you are using a laptop.

Thanks for everyones support offered here. Was in the Apple Store and they helped me with a solution. Turns out this is just the way it behaves on a Mac and they showed me what I should be doing to record the desired screen. Don't really like how it behaves on a Mac, but at least I can now use Camtasia for screen recording with a slight work around.

Well I will try my best lol. So to begin with just press command + shift + 5 on your Mac. You will see QuickPlayer full functionality comes up on page you want to record. That is what I would like to happen with Camtasia as well but does not seem there is a shortcut like is the case with QuickPlayer that will allow that. If I do not use the shortcut but in QuickPlayer go to file and click new screen recording it jumps to my desktop and not the page I want to record. This is the same scenario with Camtasia.

So what is the fix? Very simple. This does not make a lot of sense to me but mac unable to record in complete full screen it seems. So when you open up the web page you want to record you always have your red little cross to close the screen, your yellow little minus sign to minimise the screen and your green button next to the yellow minus sign that toggles between full screen and a bit less than full screen. So you want to hit the green button so page you want to record appears a bit less than full screen. Now camtasia will work perfectly not jumping back to your desktop. And because video dimensions will never be as big as your full mac screen it does not matter that the page you recording is slightly smaller than full screen. It will still appear full screen because video dimensions will never be that big and if you hit the green button it is the full screen but just slightly smaller than your mac screen. I hope I make sense lol.

What is a mystery to me though is why is it when I hit the shortcut command + shift + 5 that it allows me to record the full mac screen without having to hit the green button to make web page slightly smaller? If it can work this way with a shortcut then why can't it work this way when I simply hit file and say new recording? Why is it then jumping to my desktop.

The apple support guy was trying to explain if recording was taking up full screen of mac then there will be no way of getting out of the recording hence why you need to hit the green button to make web page slightly smaller than full screen.

Still does not make a lot of sense to me as it can work like that then with the Quicktime Player shortcut? So idk lol but just know that doing it the way I described, although does not make 100% sense to me allows me to now use Camtasia and QuickTime Player with no issues at all.

Hi,

It sounds like the hotkey for screen recording might be mapped to something else, like hiding all windows or entering fullscreen or something. If you open up a ticket with our Tech Support, they can screenshare with you and figure out what's going on much quicker than I'm able to over text chat.
