Magnifier Offset

We have a magnifier tool, but you don’t want to cover up what your magnifying. Snagit needs a way to magnify a section and offset it magnified image a bit.

You can currently do something very similar with the Spotlight/Magnify effect in Snagit Windows, but it doesn’t look as nice (doesn’t include the lines).

But it also needs to operate on what ever shape type you have selected, circle, rectangle, polygon, free form

And it would hopefully have an ability to "fill" the area leading to the source. Allowing the end user to specify both the outline color and the fill color. And transparency settings for each.

Might as well add a soupçon of blurry fill to it as well

Hey Chris

I'm not sure if this thread is meant to cover it or if a yet to be seen thread will address it. But what about a way to interactively enable magnification of an area when working with fussy details? Kind of like what we see when initially capturing?

Sometimes I've captured stuff I didn't intend to capture and I find myself having to trim away from an edge in order to get it spot on. But aside from that initial capture or zooming in like crazy, it's difficult to see detail. This is something that used to be simple as a cake walk using that wonderful little dialog that allowed you to trim pixels at a time using spin controls. But sadly it was removed. I used that little dialog a ton!

Cheers... Rick :)

The magnifier tool right now only supports circle type but it should also provide rectangle, square and any shape that the user wants.

After applying a spotlight effect, is it possible to make changes? It seems that after hitting Apply, I can't do anything with my spotlight unless I undo and start again.

@Paul - I'm raising my hand here. Happens to me all the time as well. And the really super frustrating bit is that I should know better! I know good and well I have to click Apply after doing edges or spotlight or whatever.

Old ingrained habits are hard to break, aren't they? ;)

@Rick Yes, if the suggestion in the OP as I think it is, then this will be a good feature. At present the spotlight is a little too inflexible.

@Rick.  The weird thing is, I do it correctly with all the effects, but not resize.  I think it's because the effects are on the right and are in your sensitive peripheral vision, while resize is beneath the image in your "dead" peripheral vision

Actually it's an interesting point.  Why do you have to click Apply?  If the effects are visible as you go, why can't you just move on to the next thing?  You can always use undo.

I pretty much agree (vote for) the general intent of the comments already made.

This Idea didn’t get enough votes to be under consideration for a release in the next year or so. Having multiple shapes to choose from and being able to move the magnified area would be great. But there were other things that were deemed more valuable by the community. Like was stated above, there is a way to accomplish a version of this in Snagit Windows with the Spotlight/Magnify effect. But we hope to do this eventually. But we are marking this one as Not Planned for the time being. At this point, there are a lot of other things things we’ll be focusing on first. Definitely bring this up again when we do our next round of voting if you still see a need!

Here are the definitions of what the statuses mean for Ideas.
Here is the overall vote count for the rest of the Ideas in this roundup, as well as what has been implemented since our previous round.

I submitted this yesterday via the support tool, but it's more appropriate here.

I would love to replicate a feature from Napkin, which sadly hasn't been updated for a long time. It's the magnified call out. I know you feature a magnify tool and it's working perfectly, but their tool let's you instantly drag a magnified callout to anywhere on the page (http://aged-and-distilled.com, see also their video → http://media.aged-and-distilled.com/napkin_1_5/video/Call-outsFV.mp4.

I can sort of replicate the feature in Snagit via multiple copy/paste actions, but it isn't as straightforward as they used to have.

Thanks for considering!
