Main timeline tabs question

I am trying to trim a clip in my main timeline.  If I double-click on it, it creates a new tab immediately to the right of where the words "Main Timeline" are.  I edited the clip in that tab.  However, when I click back on 'main timeline' the clip is unedited.  Question(s): Am I missing a step where I 'save' the edits from the clip so that they load into the main timeline video?  If so, how do I do that?  If not, what is the purpose of creating a new tab with just that one clip in it?  Also, am I using the wrong words to describe these elements of my experience?  I searched in help and google and couldn't find anything like what I am experiencing.

If you look to the left, you see "Marker". Looks like you need to click the up arrow to collapse that. Those "tabs" you see are actually markers.

Katie,

in the screenshot you posted, "ideal time 2" is the name of a group you have opened up.   The tabs represent all the groups you currently have open, plus the main timeline.

In terms of editing, if you want to change the duration of a group, all you need to do is trim it on the main timeline.  If you want to change properties of the elements inside the group, you do that in the group's tab.

What sort of edit are you trying to make?

Stephen, thanks for the reply.  I am wanting to cut portions of the video out.  I will go read about what groups are, as that's something I haven't figured out yet.  And, since I already made all the edits I wanted in that 'group,' is there a way to transfer my edits to the main timeline?

Thanks for the reply, Rick.  I tried that but the tabs I'm speaking of remain.  Also, the length of the clip in the secondary tab is 45 seconds, and in the main timeline is 3 minutes.  I'm adding a new screen shot with a circle around the tabs in case it wasn't clear what I meant before.

I think I may have figured out what I needed, with the help of knowing what search terms to use!  I "ungrouped" the clip and as soon as I did, the edits I'd made 'to the group' showed up in the main timeline.  One perk: now I know about groups and that will be useful in the future!  Thanks y'all for the help!
