Major Issue- You Might Want To Check This

I don't know if this is a issue isolated to me or if this is a bug that you may need to investigate for yourself to prevent losing saved captures and images from your computer.

This has to do with the Snagit library.

First off even though I don't really make use of the library something that has been be a issue is that captures always get saved to the library even though I have in the preferences to Not save to the library. I just live with it.

Secondly, Remove all items from the tray when closing Editor never works. I just live with it.

But today because of a question in the forum I was testing some things in the library.

I did just updated to the newest version 18.0.1 and when I opened the library The first thing to hit me was all the stuff that was deleted prior to Snagit 2018 was back in the library.
Ok I'll just delete them again.

Here is the major scary issue. It also deleted my images and todays captures from the locations they were saved to  !!!

If I right click to open a image with Snagit from a folder,  it gets put in the library and then if I delete any copy of it in the library the original and/or and new saved copy,  Snagit also deletes the original and the new saved copy form my computer. NOT COOL>

Luckily I found them all in the recycle bin and was able to restore them.

Test this out with a single image and DO NOT delete anything from the Snagit library till you do.

I may be (am, probably) wrong, but I seem to recall a thread stating exactly the same thing. Some time this year. No time to dig into forum archives, right now.

I think this is working as designed. you can remove it from the library and the graphic is not deleted from your hard drive.

That's just it. It IS getting deleted to the recycle bin from the harddrive.

If I do a capture and from the editor save the capture to my desktop or a folder with a new name then I come back later and delete the image from the Snagit library (which should not even be there anyways) it also deletes the image from my desktop and/or the folder and puts it in the recycle bin.

If I right-click on a image that say I purchased or downloaded and send it to Snagit editor
it's put in the Snagit library and if I delete that entry from the library Snagit also deletes my original from the folder on my harddrive.

If that's how its designed to work than I should just go and delete all my years worth of images now and save Snagit the work.

Test it. Do a capture, save it to your desktop with a new name .png or .jpg.
Go into the library and delete it. If what is happening to me is you will see the desktop image is gone now too and in the recycle bin.

I'm not sure where the confusion is coming from to be honest.

SnagIt saves  newly saved png's, jpeg's, etc to the library.

If you select and delete it them . It deletes it from the computer, regardless of where it's stored.

Working as designed. It deletes files when you tell it to. It only removes them from the library if you tell it to do that

If you want to delete an image from the Library only, you select "Remove from Library"

Not Delete!

Or I'm really missing something here. What, I'm not sure.I haven't installed 2018 update yet, I like letting the bugs bite others first.

Maybe I'm the one that misunderstands Snagits  library.
As I said in my OP I don't use it and have not really messed with it.

So to understand,  If I right-click on a image from say a folder that has images from a photo shoot and "open with" to bring it into Snagit,  Snagit now controls the fate of that image?

I thought Snagit's library was for,  about and constricted to Snagit as a means to organize Snagit projects.

I didn't see it as a file management system for my computer as there is no folder structure tree in the library.
in other words,  I can't open a folder from the library like you can in bridge for example. It only shows what has been in Snagit.

If thats how it works that it has control over my original file and can be deleted from my computer,
than IMHO it should not even be a option to delete. The only option should be remove from library.

Why would I want Snagit to have the ability to delete a original file just because I brought it into Snagit to annotate and save out as something new?

And to top that off, they shouldn't even be in the library as I have the options to save to library
Un-checked which has never made a difference. The library still gets populated.

I never thought about it much.

I don't see the reason SnagIt needs to import original images to the Library. Not for working in the editor.
I'll surmise it's because SnagIt was more of a Hybrid Organizer "If you will" when Folders View was available. It used Windows folder system to re-organize and access images.
They nixed it after version 11.3.0

You select a folder. Images and videos of a format SnagIt recognizes, open in the Library automatically.
You can drag them from the Library , down into the "Open Captures Tray".
It's wasn't called "Recent Captures Tray" until after folders view was removed.
You can drag images from the Library, into other Windows folders as well. So, that's why I call it a hybrid organizer.

The pop up was more informative as to what would happen when you deleted files from the Library as well.

Your made some valid points.

 Got me thinking anyway.

Thanks for taking me back to the days of the Folder View. I miss that feature! I wish it was still an option. For the original poster in this thread that hasn't used the library, you are missing a big PLUS to what it can do for you.

I agree if you do not have the save new captures to the Library, that choice should be honored. I always use that feature and then go back to the library to delete unnecessary captures.

Frankly I don't see any big PLUS in using Snagit's library.
They have stripped it down over the years,  no folder view any more for one, and
just doesn't fit my workflow for organization.

I have used Snagit for many years and have explored the library and to me it's just a half baked organizer.

There is no reason Snagit should hold a file I import  into the editor hostage with ability to X that file from system once I have saved it out as something new.

And it has never honored my choice to Not save to the library.
