Modify the Default Canvas Color

In Snagit, the default canvas color is transparent.  I would like to be able to set my default color to white.  TechSmith Support has confirmed that it is not possible (at this time) to change the default color.  Please add a feature to allow a choice.

That should be an easy fix. There is another thread about adding layers. They are already there and all that is needed is to be able  see and manipulate them in a basic way. No need for masking layers and all the other possibilities that exist in  Paintshop, Photoshop,Affinity etc

Then you could  duplicate the  layer, clear the bottom layer and fill it with white

I have no idea of how you work but PNG and JPG files do not support transparency so if you save as in either of these formats you will get a white background

PNG files actually do support transparency.

I also would request this feature.  I need a white image background approx 90% of the time.  It's an annoyance to have to go to the upper menu to fix it.  [There isn't even a way to add Canvas Color when you customize the toolbar icons.]

Am I wrong or was setting the default canvas color an option in earlier versions of SnagIt Editor?

Yes, it was an option in prior versions,  one whose absence incenses me ceaselessly, so kindly do return that to us as an editable Preference, s.v.p.

I would also welcome the option to set default canvas color to white!

As Technical Writer, I need to place the screenshots to Atlassian Confluence pages where transparent isn't supported, unfortunately. So I have to reset the canvas color to white very often, which is annoying.

I want to at least have the canvas color in the toolbar - one of the things I really like about the new Snagit is having the ability to customize my toolbar to bring in functions from different areas - this used to be in the image toolbar...why isn't it now?  I hate having to use the menu option - I use this functionality all the time

(Not sure why that posted twice - I edited to fix the parenthesis, and even the second post is open ended, so it didn't even take my edit)

Hi,

I can confirm that in some previous versions there was an option to set the default canvas color.

I personally have the same problem. I am taking screenshots for most of my working hours and pasting images to system that doesn't support transparent canvas color. Previously it was possible to set canvas color to white. Now I have to take and combine around 100-200 screenshots per day and in all those images canvas color has to be changed manually.

So returning the default canvas color option to Snagit would be so welcome.

Ok, for the love of god. I keep changing my canvas to transparent and it keeps going to black. So if there's a default transparent or white background, somehow now mine is black.

I go into SnagIt Editor Prefs (Win) and set Editor BACKGROUND color. I assumed this was the canvas, but no. I have no idea what this is for and why do I care, because I simply cannot see any difference.

So every time I go into SnagIt editor, I have to go to Image->canvas color to change it. Oh ya, in between SnagIt Editor crashing just to  make things interesting. interestingly enough, you use the same terminology for the Canvas-BACKGROUND  color, so how do we know the difference and just let me change my preference, please.

UI terminology is important for usability. Allowing the user to set preferences so that they don't have to do things over and over, is VERY important.

If there's a top secret way to do this, please let me know.

That is setting the UI background. If you go to FILE / NEW you will be given the option to choose the image background and if you pick something it SHOULD stick
Keep in mind that if you have a crash before the values are written, you may have to do it again. Also,  if you are sending them in from another program including the snagit printer, you may end up with a white background anyway.
That may be beyond what Snagit can do or even be expected to do. i.e if you load a PNG with transparency into the snagit editor you get transparency. If you print that same png, the background is white

That would be great if I actually created new images. I usually take a screen shot and select New from Clipboard, which doesn't give me that option. I edit the image and such and each time it has a black canvas. Of course, once I go change the canvas color, why can't it remember my selection!?

So I went the roundabout way as you suggested, created a new image, made the canvas clear, and then proceeded the way I normally do with New from Clipboard. Oh, and now it's the right color I picked in the New. If you don't use New, you'll never find that function. Come on now, I think we can make it a bit easier to use, huh? If I change my canvas color, I'd expect it to stay that way forever until I change it again.

So if there's the UI background and the Canvas background, maybe consider naming them appropriately so that the user can distinguish between the two.  Calling them both Background Color is confusing.

Very irritating that default canvas color cant' be changed. It was able to be in prior versions. I despise it when an upgrade "downgrades" such simple functionality. I agree with someone else who said they need to change this 90% 0f the time.

I really MISS the functionality to set default canvas color that used to be there.  I use a white canvas 95% of the time and have to continually set it each and every time - a real productivity killer.  Please restore the functionality.

I find some apps fail when you cut and paste with a transparent background so I would like to have a default as well. When it fails (like it just did in Evernote) I have to go back, change the canvas color and then paste again. Happens a few times per week.

I would also like the ability to change the default canvas color to white. I use the eraser tool frequently, and it's a pain to always have to change the canvas color first.

Hi Whitney - how are you creating these images...via capture or via File > New or via File > New from Clipboard?

SO what are ya a teaser? LOL

You could just tell whitney if you save SnagIt captures as jpegs or create new images as jpegs the canvas will be white by default.

I have been doing some testing and found that "New from Clipboard' will use a previous canvas color.

My process:

I create a "New Image" in the editor with a color canvas.
Let's say blue. I also just to be sure remove that New image from Snagit recent tray and the library.

If I do a capture that also has Copy to Clipboard set then in the editor I can do New from Clipboard and the color I set my New Image to is there(retained).

Here is the problem though. If one has in the Editor Preferences "Automatically save new captures in the library" On,  than you now have two of the same capture.

One of the original capture (with transparent canvas) that is on the canvas when the editor opens  and the "New from Clipboard" image with my canvas color when I paste it.

Now I have to go and remove/delete one of them or make sure that the "Automatically save new captures in the library" preference is Off before doing the capture(s) and then go back and turn it back on If I remember.

Not only would the ability to set a default canvas color be good, But possibly a option in the preset options to toggle "Save to Library" on and off also.

Some captures I want to save to the library, Others such as this case of having to use "New from Clipboard" to have the canvas color I want creates extra steps/work because I have to go back and remove duplicates or remember to change a editor preference back and forth.

:)
