When I use Camtasia to record anything really, when I play back the audio, there is NO SOUND AT ALL. Even the built-in sound effects don't work. And when I play back the audio in something else, it works fine...I really want to know what's happening.

Does Windows recognize your audio hardware? [Start], [Device Manager], [Sound, video game controllers]?
If you have "virtual" devices listed, disable them. Now give it another go.

Thank you! I have been looking for a solution for hours now and this was it! Definitely something I would have not known.

It could be that the volume is off or turned down for Camtasia.

With Camtasia open and some media w/sound on the timeline

Right-Click on the sound icon in the task bar and open the Volume Mixer

Check that Camtasia is on (No red X on the little speaker)
If there is a X on the speaker click on it to toggle the sound on/off.
Adjust the slider.
