Hi all.  I was recording a really important video discussion between us that included many ideas etc. but my mac crashed right near the end.  When it was restarted, it did not show in the library.  Does anyone know how to recover the recording that was happening?

Surely it is was being written on the drive somewhere?  Possibly? Please

I would greatly appreciate any help,

Yes, we do save out the temporary video as we record in a temp folder on your Mac.  Getting to these files is non-trivial, so if you run into problems with these steps I suggest contacting our tech support.

Here is a video of the steps below: http://www.screencast.com/t/OA0YlI4fkG2
(Note that it will be a .mov and not a .mp4 that we usually produce)

Open up Finder > Go > Go To Folder (or command + shift + g in finder) and type in /var/folders/

This folder should have a few other folders with 2 character names.  These folders include another folder with a long name of characters.  The folder you want is one of these long named characters that includes files 0 C and T.  T is the file you want.

Inside of the T folder should be your .mov, assuming it was not corrupted from the crash.   From here I suggest copying it to a different folder.

If you want to convert this mov to an mp4 for sharing or bringing into Snagit there are a few additional steps you can follow, but there are no guarentees that it will work for your .mov.

If you want to try these, double click the file to open it in QuickTime Player.  Go to File > Export and choose iPad, iPhone.... option.  Choose the size you want and save the video.  This will create a .m4z file, which is Apples version of mp4.  Simply edit the name of the file to be .mp4 instead of .m4z to convert it.  Now you can bring it into Snagit or share it off however you like.

Hopefully this helps!

Thanks

Has this location changed in the recent SnagIt release? The app crashed as it was finishing up a screen capture (after I had hit stop) and I had to reboot. Got the message "Video record failed for unknown reason" just before the reboot so the other possibility is that SnagIt deleted the temp files at this failure point... Thoughts?

Is there anything similar in Camtasia for Mac? After recording for 90 mins, the recorder stopped and an error popped up "TACC Unavailable". I looked there just in case, but could not find any .mov files. Also looked in the /temporary recordings/ folder, but everything there was older than today. (anyway, I did submit a ticket earlier)

I was in the exactly same situation yesterday and I found a much simpler solution. It turned out that there was a "Temporary Recordings" folder under "~/Movies/Camtasia 2", where all the recent recordings were saved. They were in this trec format, but they can be imported into Camtasia. The funny thing was when I spoke with a Camtasia representative over the phone, he told me there was no way to recover lost recordings on a Mac. It seems that better training is needed.

Hi,

If anyone is looking for the temporary folder in Snagit, it's now located at

~/Library/Group Containers/7TQL462TU8.com.techsmith.snagit/Snagit 2019/Temporary/
