New track to insert a clip?

I need to replace a piece in the middle of a recording, audio and video.  I couldn'mt seem to get "extend frame" to do anything. So, I have recorded a new clip. I want to insert the edited version of that clip, which is currently at the far right of the timeline into the middle of it. I searched online for how to do this and what I found said to put the new clip into a new track. Is that necessary/better? Why can't I just cut and paste the new piece? Thanks.

if you click the clip that should follow your new recording, then press and hold the Shift key as you click and drag to make room for the new segment.

Note that pressing and holding shift will also allow you to drag everything "farther down the track" back to close the gap too!

Thanks. So, I don't need to put my new clip in a new track. I only need to split the old one, move the rightmost part over, and then cut and paste my new clip into the middle of the old clip, correct?

Thanks. So, I don't need to put the new clip in a new track, right? I only need to split the current track and cut and paste the new one that is right now at the end of he timeline.
