New output for snagit - File Path to Clipboard

I would like to see a new option for output with Snagit. Place the path of the captured file in the clipboard. This saves time when you need to do something else with the file like a paste it into a file upload dialog, etc

Hello,
Thanks for the suggestion.

I think we already have something that will work for you!

When you take a capture from the web, Snagit automatically captures the URL for you. You can see this by clicking on the Tags tab and looking in the Details group box.

That live link is saved with the image, so even if you come back a year later, that link will still be there.
While you can't copy the link from that location, if you click the More Details button, you will be able to copy the link and see other information as well like the browser used, the file name, size, etc.

I hope this is a good workaround for you!

No this work around will not work. I actually have already developed my own work around, which is output to program where the program is my own custom exe I have written. The custom program takes "" as the parameter and simply places "" into the clipboard.

The usage is simple. Take this message board. If I wanted to add an image to this reply I would click, add image, Choose file, and then click a bunch of times through the folders and then select the image I just took, I may even click details and sort by date modified to make sure it is the correct one. With my way I just click add image, Choose file and then control V to paste it into the dialog. No guessing if it is the correct one and no wasting time trying to browse for it.

When you have a lot of this kind of stuff to do in your workflow it can really speed things up and increase accuracy dramatically.

I know I and others where I work find this very useful so I thought it would be a great feature (and extremely easy to add, my program is 1 line of code).

Excellent suggestion, and if I may say, a very creative use of the program output! It's a small thing, but browsing for a file that you just saved is annoying. I can see this feature being useful. Thanks for the suggestion.

Jing already does this feature and being forced to upgrade from Jing pro to snagit is somewhat frustrating as snagit 11 does not seem to support this workflow. How did you compile this exe. I would love to have this workflow back again. Thanks.

Agreed. Jing has this feature now. But having the editing capabilties of Snagit with this feature would be great.

In Jing, we populate the custom code box like this:

http://webserver_name/[filename]

we save our captures to the webserver with the click of a button and get the URL to the image immediately.

Snagit needs to get this feature too. Currently, we can only post like this to screencast.com, but many of our captures are company-confidential and need to only be posted within our company.

I asked this a couple of months ago also...

http://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmi...

Got the a similar, it'd be nice to have response...

Was using snagit this morning and was reminded how nice it would be to have to this. Which got me to thinking, snagit has a send to program option..

Using this, I was able to write a simple c# script to do exactly this!

Step by step instructions...

1) Create the txt file with the C# program.

// Simple c# script to copy 1st parameter passed to clipboard
// To Compile: C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\csc /t:winexe /out:clip.exe clip.cs
// Usage: clip "some text to be copied"
//
using System;
using System.Windows.Forms;

namespace CopyToClipBoard
{
class Clip
{
[STAThread]

static void Main(string[] args) {
string messageText;
bool PopUp = false; /// change to true to pop up by default
messageText = "Copied to clipboard: ";
Clipboard.SetText(args[0]);
if (args.Length > 1)
{
if ( String.Compare(args[1],"N") == 0 )
{
PopUp = false;
} else if ( String.Compare(args[1],"Y") == 0 )
{
PopUp = true;
}
}
if (PopUp == true)
{
System.Windows.Forms.MessageBox.Show(messageText + args[0] );
}
}
}
}

2. Compile it...

C:\WINDOWS\Microsoft.NET\Framework\v3.5\csc /t:winexe /out:clip.exe clip.cs

If you don't have the c# compiler (csc) installed, this should help: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/libra...

3. Add clip.exe as an Output Properties program.

To have it pop up the file name, pass a Y as the 2nd parameter, N or no 2nd parameter and it's silent.
e.g. Parameter: "<CaptureFilename>" Y

4. Thats it.. just send the output to the program you created. You may be able to change your profile so this is the default action.

Cheers.

On the outlook Properties, Image File tab, add a check box that will either copy or prompt to copy the path/filename.txt, directly to the clipboard. That way when you need to upload the file into another program you can past the path/filename directly into the file open dialog.

Coming from Jing where this is built in to the process flow of taking a screen grab it is very awkward losing the feature in SnagIt. I dont think that I should have to start writing my own application to get this feature.

Please product manager and development team, this can't be a big thing to bring into the product and you would make so many people that have recently moved onto SnagIt really happy.

I found this lack of simple feature (automatically install filename of screenshot file into clipboard) so important to my workflow that I have switched to Greenshot.

Yes I also have switched.  I use Screenpresso to have this feature.  I still don't understand why this simple request baffles Techsmith when Jing did it...

One thing I have found is that with snagit you can drag and drop the image from the history bar at the bottom to the upload field, however this doesn't work for video recordings.  In Screenpresso this drag and drop works for both images and video recordings.

http://youtu.be/i-72xrf5hEw

 Also I noticed when we were forced from Jing Pro to SnagIt that the video files from Snagit were three or four times larger in file size than Jing, and didn't seem to be any better quality.  Screenpresso is giving me much smaller mp4 file sizes. While there are things I think the SnagIt editor does better, there are also a couple of features that the Screenpresso editor does better (although overall I'd say SnagIt wins here), for my overall daily workflow Screenpresso saves me most time with the two benefits of file name to clipboard and mp4 file size.  I'd say if SnagIt sort these two out soon and advertise it well I'll come back, but if they continue to ignore these two then I'll probably stick with Screenpresso.

Exporting to temp folder for uploading to various web sites..

Hi,

I think it will be great if SnagIt can get a feature which will allow me to share the capture to some temp folder on my local machine, and immediately put the path to the file on my clipboard. That way I can use this path in Browse dialogs while uploading the images/videos to various sites manualy.

I often need this and current workflow requires me to first use Save As, then manually find the file. This way it would be easy as sharing the url for screencast or other cloud storages.

Best regards,

Hi,

There is a way for you to automatically save your file to a desired location AND put the image on the clipboard at the same time. The main idea is to set up a profile that contains two share outputs - the clipboard and a file. You can set the file save option to a folder you create and a naming convention you choose.

When you have selected your options, click the Save As button and give your new profile a name and hotkey. Then, capture away!

 Here's how:
In the main Snagit Capture interface, choose these options:

Then, do this:

I hope this helps!

Hi,

thanks for the tip, but this is not what I exactly wanted.

What I want is that file path is copied to clipboard, not image itself. That way I can paste the path when uploading the image to various services which you don't currently support, for example Google hangouts, forums, in fact anything that has Browse or File upload dialog.

What would make me happy even more is that it saves the image to Temp folder, because I don't need to keep it.

I also don't use profiles much, I just use default capture where I can pick whether it's image or video, then share it where I need it manualy.

That is why I think that it would be great to have Sharing option, which will automatically save the image to Windows Temp folder, and put it's full path to clipboard.

It could be done if I combine Export to File profile and something that is missing. And that is FilePath to Clipboard. But that is also not what I wanted, because I don't need the profiles hassle. That way I cannot decide between image and video, and I don't want to do that.

I just want a simple "export to temp folder and share path to clipboard" thing. Few minutes after that I don't even care about the exported image, and if I do, I can always find the original in SnagIt.

The instructions provided by Mark Greenhalgh in this thread will copy the file path to your clipboard not the image, but it's true that it would not help you save only selected images to the temp folder.

Yes, well, that is why my primary choice would be the Share output profile. Sometimes I want to share already existing capture, not a new one.

Anyway, it would save a lot of time to have something like this. And it can be separate install from the web, or integrated into the app, I don't care :-)

Hi,
This is why I think the Screencast share output option is a great choice for you.
Just take your capture as you normally would, click the Screencast share option and your image is sent to the clould and you automatically get a link to share on your clipboard.

And later, if you want, you can navigate to your folder(s) on Screencast.com and get the link again. Or, just send the same image to SC.com from within Snagit and  get a new link to paste.

Here is how it works:
http://www.screencast.com/t/dRd1eTfoGJ

Having a TechSmith Screencast.com account is free and only take a minute to set up.
You can find out more at www.screencast.com.

I hope this helps!

Don't get me wrong. I'm using cloud sharing for years and it's best thing ever. I share links in chat on daily basis.

But we are now talking about totally different thing. Uploading image file to third party web applications.

Okay.
Can you tell me what the link is for? I'm a bit confused on this but let me see if I have this right:

You want a link on the clipboard from the temp folder that references an image.
But, you might not ever need the image again and you might delete it from the temp folder.

If this is the case, then how can a link reference an image on your computer that you might delete later? Wouldn't that break the link you are pasting? Sorry if I am being a bit dense here!!

Is the link meant to paste a copy of the image in your document making it a part of the document itself? Or would the link be pasted as a hyperlink to the image?

In the case where the image would be pasted, could you not just copy the image to the clipboard and paste that?

Sorry again if I am missing something.. I just need to understand the workflow a bit better.

Also, you could set up your Screencast.com account and that will save the image to the cloud where you never have to see it AND it will automatically give you a reference path on the clipboard that you can share immediately.

Have you tried the Screencast.com share option?

Hey Kelly,

first, thanks for your quick support :-)

Now, for example, below this textbox where I'm writing this messege there is "attach image" button. It has an option to select file from computer. When I click it it opens "Open file" dialog, like any other website, forum, windows app, etc. I want to be able to just paste there something like "C:\Windows\Temp\capture_123456.png".

When I click upload I don't care about the image file anymore. It served the purpose - uploading to web. I have it still in SnagIt in it's internal format.

That means, image should be pasted to clipboard as plain text pointing to the file in file system.

Yes, I've used Screencast for years with Jing. I moved to SnagIt recently.
Now I use Google Drive more, since it also has great viewer and pastes link to clipboard.
Problem is that those are not links to the image file. Those are links to the webpage containing the image. I can't upload this to website which expects image file. If I want to reuse the image, then I need to click on the Screencast page to get only the URL to the image, and then I can paste it to other Open File dialogs. It then downloads the file to my computer again, and uploads it to another site. You can see the problem here. It's really slow and pointlessly redundant. It works, yes, but the idea of your software is to make life easier to it's users, ofc :-)

I would like to have a button, like Share to Clipboard which will do this.
"export object (image/video) to temp folder and put the full file path to clipboard"

Best regards,
Goran Genter

Hi All,

Let's be clear.

What we're asking for is not a "link", per se.  It's not like it's a web link to some service or forum on a website.

What we're wanting is something even simpler.  We want the text of fullly-pathed filename of the file Snagit just created to be copied as a text string into the clipboard.

Not the image file contents in the clipboard.
Not the video file contents to the clipboard.
Not a screencast or web-like "link" into the clipboard.

We want the filename, as a text string, in the clipboard.

Scroll back in this topic and see my screenshot from 5 months ago of what Greenshot does.

The point of this feature is:
Right after pressing PrintScreen key on the keyboard, we could then use Ctrl-V to paste the filename of the newly created screenshot into some other application.

Make sense?

So, let's stop saying link. It's a text string.  It's a filename.  But it's not a link, because when people start saying "link" it gets confused with things like Screencast.com, etc.

I repeat, it's not a link, it's the text string of the filename on my hard disk that SnagIt just created.

We want THAT text string of THAT NEWLY CREATED filename copied to the clipboard.

Super damn simple.

Thanks,

David

Okay, gotcha, now! ;-}

We can log this as a feature request.

But, there is one thing that might help you out just in case that feature is never implemented. But, it is not a simple option that smoothly fits into your workflow - however, it might help a bit.

1. If you go to Library view and choose to view in the Details View, you see a list of all your captures.
2. You will see in the Type field whether images are saved or not.
3. If you right-click on the line of any saved image and choose properties, you will get a text string / link to that image.
4. Right-click the string / link and choose Copy Location.

You could have a workflow where you first save all your captures, then, when it is time to document their location you just do all of the file location copy / paste thing all at once.

Sorry I couldn't give you exactly what you needed, but the Snagit Devs see these posts and they log the feature requests.

Thanks for using Snagit!

Thank you, Kelly.

But beg pardon if I'm unimpressed by the veracity of your comments.

This little tiny feature request is, uh, please tell me, how old?

So, Snagit Devs read these comments and log these requests into your database?

And how long exactly has this feature request been in your database?

Has this feature request NOT made it into your lists of requests UNTIL NOW?

I would have to say most of your comments about Snagit being responsive to these comments is unseen and unproven.

This is a SIMPLE feature.

Putting a text string into the Windows clipboard is equivalent to a first year college assignment.

On my system, Snagit has been displaced by Greenshot precisely because this ONE specific feature was so critical to the speed of my workflow, that I no longer assign my PrintScreen key to Snagit.

This one tiny, measly, simple feature is missing in Snagit ... yes, because of that, and I canned your program.

What you don't get is that this feature is absolutely critical to fast finger workflows.

Once your fingers memorize PrintScreen then Ctrl-V you ain't never going back to something that slows you down.

So, you can stop trying to sell other TechSmith products in your reply.  We're all TechSmith lovers here, so cut the marketing crap and let's talk about THIS feature and nothing else.

Seriously, this drop-dead simple feature has absolutely no substitute.

I have to agree with DT here. I'm also a software developer, and this could be completed in a few hours ;-)

Please, give this feature request a higher priority, because it is important functional feature for a screen capture application... the one you often need if you want to quickly get things done. And we all do.

Yep, I've been a software engineer almost 3 decades myself.  This should be simple minor addition to a dialog, and the code to implement it would also be simple.  They could have a summer intern do this feature, it is that simple of a request.  The intern would probably get the coding done in a week or two (it's a new codebase and build system, after all ;) and then spend the rest of the summer fighting (er, I mean, navigating) the company bureaucracy to get the feature pipe-lined into a product release schedule.
