New Snag-It 11, has become useless to me! :(
I just upgraded to the new snag-it 11, thinking it would be better than the previous versions, however I am very distraught to find out, that I can no longer output to .AVI, or not even .mpg; it appears new snagit can only output to .mp4, why would you guys cripple the product like this? .mp4 is not yet supported by everything, and certainly not the programs I am using, they require .avi input. So now I really feel like I wasted my money upgrading to 11, when it does less than version 9 or 10 did.

Please bring back .avi, + other output formats.

Hello Rick,
It's true prior versions created videos in AVI format, and with Snagit 11 we dropped AVI and switched to MP4 only.

I think there were a number of reasons, but ones I know for sure involved the difficulty for most people in sharing an AVI video. We wanted something that was web-friendly, could be conceivably attached to an email, and could have a higher chance working with Mac and mobile.

I'm sorry you still need the AVI for use in another product. Can I ask if you're trying to edit your video, or do you require the AVI for DVDs or some specific distribution?

I'd like to change this into a feature request (idea) so we can better track requests for more video formats.

Also, we do offer returns for unsatisfied customers. The form for requesting a refund is here: http://www.techsmith.com/about/return...

Sincerely,
Mike Curtis

Mike,
This seems like such an easy fix - to return to selecting additional outputs, I can't comprehend why it was changed.  Many of us like Snagit but we just need alternative file outputs.  Why can't this happen???  As a former IT techie, it boggles my brain Snagit Team.

You do realize that AVI and MP4 are only container formats? Both should be equally supported, even on legacy operating systems like Windows XP (which no one should use anymore btw.).

What can cause trouble are the encoders used for the actual audio and video streams inside the containers. If you miss the decoder on your system, it won't be able to play it back. But it doesn't mean that you have to install a codec pack. Simply get VLC player, it has tons of codecs built-in and can play almost any media file. I wouldn't ever use the video players shipped with the OS (Quicktime, Mediaplayer), unless for a very rare use cases (media server streaming to a TV devIce and GoPro HFS footage playback in Mediaplayer).

I need .mov files so when Quicktime opens the moves I can scroll through, edit out parts, etc. Final Cut Pro won't accept your output either. I can open an exprot but why do I have to? Such a simple fix for you -- just give us options or we'll change apps forever. Your choice.

I would much rather see you guys develop a plugin or update that will allow additional output formats. like avi, mpg, mov.
Just having .avi would make me a happy customer.

Please make this a feature request if that will aid in getting avi support back, or whatever else you can do to aid in that direction, thanks.

Why the ability to save video in other than mp4 formats along with video-editing options was stripped from SnagIt v11 (compared to v10) ?
I'm using SnagIt v11 @MetLife and this "enhancement" takes out possibility of creating instructional videos playable in WinXP WinMediaPlayer v10, significantly diminishing value and usefullness of this tool.

Video Formats and Video Editing in SnagIt v11 vs v10.

Hi Mike,

We really need Snagit to save in AVI formats as it is vital in our work. We record these files and we then share them in conferences, however, saving in mp4 limited us too much. This should be solved!

Thank you,
Nabil M.

I agree, SnagIt needs to be able to save to AVI in order for this to be a viable product. Especially in the enterprise/business world.

Hi there. Oh this is dreadful I just got a brand new laptop so took the opportunity to upgrade to snagit 11 only to discover the same as the others - I can't save to AVI or edit it. I specifically edit AVIs and now I am wondering if I should get my money back on Snagit 11 and see if the older version will work on Win 8? Very sad :(

I edit film in Sony Vegas and although it can open any other.mp4 files, it can't open ones created by SnagIt. In fact nothing I own opens them.

I had the exact same problem, so what I started doing was running my videos in this site http://video.online-convert.com/ to convert my videos to avi format which works fine in Sony Vegas, it's a bit more work than I'd like to do just to put it into Sony vegas but hey it works and its relatively easy

Totally agree. A user just bought the recent version and can't send the video she made because our department still has windows XP and no codec/mp4 players.

AVI is essential. Horrible company decision.

If you're able to install software, VLC is a free player that will play MP4 files, and still supports XP. I've used it for years without problems.

There is also a portable version of VLC which can basically be run on every machine, even from USB sticks or portable drives.

Snagit is not designed primarily for video production. Camtasia Studio is the product you really need for quality video production. Companies who still use Windows XP should be concerned about the Microsoft countdown till that platform is no longer supported,

Why would those of us with Sony Vegas, Adobe film editing software and/or Final Cut Pro need to buy Camtasia? We just used Snag-it to capture screen content. It used to work well for that purpose for the money. Now it doesn't, but that doesn't mean that we want to buy Camtasia to duplicate film editing software we already own. We just want the screen capture to save to a universal format.

Seem like the Snag-It / TechSmith company repeatedly makes excuses, instead of admitting their error in this poor decision and rectifying it to make their customers happy.

Now we've gone to Snagit 12 and it's a year later and we STILL don't have any video format other than MP4!

I need this software to handle AVI.

I'm all for including MAC's etc. but do we really have to move onto the Apple plantation and subscribe to their small controlled world?

C'mon, Techsmith, this doesn't sound like the capable cutting-edge software house that is supposed to be you.

Disappointed in Snagit and Techsmith.

I'll add my voice to the chorus of users unhappy with Snagit 12's limited video capture format option. The mp4's created by Snagit cannot be edited in Sony Vegas (they come in as audio-only). Furthermore, using version 12's cutting and trimming feature often causes the files to become corrupt and unplayable. Not good...

I just upgrade from 10 to 12 and am annoyed that I can't save in avi format.  It's nice having mp4 format (and this should be the default), but please add avi back or and a plug-in mechanism.  Thanks

Agree with prior posters, just bought new license of SnagIt 12 and recorded a simple video of screen behavior, want to insert it into a Powerpoint.  Unfortunately SnagIt will let me insert screen captures into Powerpoint but not videos because of the .mp4 format.  SnagIt's best features are how it is quick and easy.  If I have to do a format conversion on my video that sort of defeats the purpose...

I too am super-frustrated!  I just purchased the latest version of Snagit.  Before I purchased it, I sampled an earlier version on a friends computer.  It did everything that I needed AND I was particularly impressed that I could change the file format to a format that took up less space than an mp4.  I am very, very disappointed and I feel that I wasted my $50 on the product.  I cannot understand why there are NO options - it seems ridiculous in this day and age that what was a great program has been degraded to having only one file format.  And as stated above, the file format doesn't work with all other programs like PowerPoint.  We don't just want to use the product for web stuff some of us need it so that we can use it for academic presentations and other functions.  I am so disapointed and in shock that the feature was removed.

Guess I should throw my hat into the ring as well. Sony Movie Studio 12 user using SnagIt 12 as that is what was purchased for work. Regardless of the codec packs installed it isn't possible to import SnagIt MP4 files into Sony as anything but audio. Based on the various threads I've seen about this TechSmith has no plan to respond to this complaint or fix it so it looks like I'm stuck, along with a lot of other people, with a fairly useless product.

I upgraded from SnagIt 9 to SnagIt 11 and found that it doesn't save the videos in .avi format. The issue for me is I can't load the Mp4 output into PowerPoint; I could load the .avi format into PowerPoint. We really want something simple... like capture video in SnagIt and share out findings in a PowerPoint presentation to the group. We shouldn't have to go buy/learn other software to do this. Does PowerPoint have a plug in for importing mp4 since SnagIt isn't doing anything about making avi available to us?

Why do you think PowerPoint can't import mp4's? I do it all the time.
