New Snagit release: Snagit 11.4

  • Announcement
  • Updated 6 years ago
Hey folks,

Big news! Today, we are happy to release Snagit 11.4. We've got some exciting stuff in 11.4, including:

  • The Step Tool: A quicker way to highlight a series of steps. Each click applies a stamp with the next number in turn. 1-2-3-Done!
  • Blur Tool: Protect your privacy or hide things you don't want people to see by making an area blurry or pixelated.
  • Updated Editor: We have merged some of the tabs, combined the Callout and text tools, and generally tidied up the interface.
  • New Styles: We updated the default tool gallery styles to be more consistent and help give your screenshots a bit more of a modern look.

Many new changes this time around, so we have a blog post going into further detail. Check it out here: http://blogs.techsmith.com/news-events/snagit-update-small-things/

Let us know what you think, or if you have any questions or concerns with Snagit 11.4!

I dig how it auto updates now when you check for updates, though I would like to see the patch notes when it finished updating. Was there a way to see patch notes after it applied them for 11.4?

And great job on your Snagit and Camtasia products, using them daily.

FYI ...

since upgrading to 11.4.0, no fixed region capture will work

the region area shows OK, but cannot click on screen to fire capture

regular region capture works OK, as does all-in-1

I apologize for the inconvenience.  This is a verified bug in 11.4 and we're currently looking into the issue.

Hi guys, that is a PRETTY major bug... I do love you guys, but please get your QOS department up to snuff... after the last few updates I can no longer trust in techsmith version updates .. ie: finding myself checking forums first before updating.... it seams bugs as major as region capture not working, and snagit crashing, should be caught by your QOS team before major releases and "big news" announcements...  anyhow.. sorry to be harsh - but i feel it is tarnishing your reputation

I just re-installed SnagIt 11.4.3 (Build 280) on a Win7 machine and now the OneClick button (and menu) appear all pixelated. Not sure what the heck happened but this didn't happen on my old machine. Help?

Hi there

Does anything change if you right-click your Windows Desktop and choose Personalize, followed by clicking Display on the left side near the bottom in the "See Also" area? What do you see there? 100%? 125%

Have you changed your DPI setting?

Display drivers all up to date?

Cheers... Rick :)

Thanks for the tips Rick! Tried what you suggested - Display is at 100%, drivers are up-to-date & haven't changed my DPI setting.

It's a brand-new laptop (Dell Latitude E7240) so I haven't the foggiest about why this version of SnagIt is doing this vs the one on my old laptop (also a Dell). The old version was 11.2.

Go figure! I'll probably shut off OneClick for now, even though I really like using that feature.

Hi Shar - That is a weird problem! Sorry Snagit isn't behaving as it should. The good news is that we still offer free tech support for Snagit 11 so if you want to have a support agent fix it for you, feel free to open a ticket at support.techsmith.com.

Before commenting on Version 11.4 I want to say I love Techsmith's products and use them daily!
Version 11.4
I like the blur and step tools, however not a fan of the changes made to the editor's interface. I believe the library is more convenient as a dockable window than as a tab (would have preferred this introduced as an option to turn on as a tab and close the dockable window). In addition the tags tab has been removed, because of this you have to add flags and keywords through the library now. This is a step backwards as you can no longer add tags to open captures and have to fumble through the library to find them and tag them (which is incongruous as the whole purpose to tag a capture is to organize them for ease of access). This becomes more painful if you have several captures open or have had some open for an extended period of time. Please bring this tab back or allow it to be turned back on (as can be done with the Hotspots tab). Got to say 'ease of use' has been reduced with this update not improved.

I am really disappointed in the way TechSmith "tidied up" the UI in 11.4. I installed the update yesterday morning, and I used it all afternoon. This morning, I uninstalled it and went back to 11.3.

The first thing I noticed is that the Min/Restore/Max controls are missing from the capture windows, and the View menu is gone. I create rendered models in my CAD software, and I frequently tweak my standard scenes to get the right contrast between the background, the object, and annotations I add in SnagIt. I have to tile my screen caps so I can compare the iterations, and this is very difficult when you take away the controls. Losing the Tags tab, etc. just makes the situation worse.

Come on people, this is productivity software. I understand that Stupid User UI is popular right now, but you don't have to penalize power users. It's your business, and you can "tidy up" the UI if you think it's really important, but give us the option of turning on the tools we need to get our jobs done. After the reaction to Windows 8, I'm surprised any company would block existing UI.

How do we turn OFF the Dropbox feature?  I upgraded this morning.  When I first opened it up, it asked if I wanted to use Dropbox to backup my images.  I thought "Sure  - seems like a cool feature".  Now I can't a) capture a region (which I see above is a bug) and b) preview in editor.  Everything is full screen (which sucks for a capture across three monitors) and I can't see what I'm capturing without going and opening it up.  I've tried other capture profiles and it's all the same.  Ugh.

Hi Todd,

It seems to me that you have a new version of Dropbox installed that comes with a screen capture feature. It is a known issue that Dropbox takes over the "Print Screen" key which we have a solution for here: https://support.techsmith.com/entries/27635888-Snagit-Print-Screen-Sending-Files-to-Dropbox

Disabling this feature should correct your issues.

No! No! No! You include "cleaning up the UI" as a new 11.4 feature - really? Why would you take away Folders from the Library? That leaves only Windows Explorer to find files. No. This is a huge step backwards, and I've been using SnagIt since Version 5.0.

Note: You cannot preview .SNAG files within WinExplorer. Not being able to open a folder --WITHIN SnagIt-- to see what your .snag captures are ...as you can in 11.3... is a step backwards.

Tags are great but I need to be able to save captures in SPECIFIC folders so I need to control WHERE captures are stored.  Setting the default folder for captures is only to one folder. You have everything under the sun in Library: Recent captures (by varying date ranges) Applications (nearly everyone of them), websites (any and all sites I've 'snagged' from), Keywords/tags, flags.  Not having Folders in Library is just silly. It's a LIBRARY.

Rolling back to 11.3 posthaste.

11.4 is a FAIL!

I am rolling back to 11.2.1 until some of these issues are cleared up.  Ver 11.3 crashed my editor (known bug) so I can't even that one.  How long till I get the new features?

I commented about the library folders issue on G+ and they asked me to post it here but guess what? It's already posted!

11.4 is a bust.  Why do they take away things that we use???

I called support about it and they told me to also post it to here.

Are you guys going to bring back the library folders??

Cannot install the 11.4 upgrade. I run Windows 8.1 Pro on a fairly new HP laptop, not much else installed apart from Office 2013. Starting the upgrade, I get prompted for the install language. Then I get a dialog where I can select between "Modify" , "Repair" and "Remove". Which is odd. I want to upgrade, not repair or modify. OK, I don't want to remove, but neither "Modify" nor "Repair" gets me anywhere. I end up with a message "Error 1316: A network error occurred while attempting to read from the file: C:\Users\MyUserName\AppData\Local\Temp\SnagIt_Setup\snagit.msi"
This is very different from the usual seamless upgrade experience from Techsmith. Any ideas?

Like others here, finding myself just a bit more bewildered than usual with the interface redesign. Literally spent the last ten minutes searching for the blur tool! Now that I've finally figured out where it is, it appears to work differently than it used to. Seems I used to select the area I wanted to blur, then head for the blur bit. Now it removes the selection when I click the blur tool and forces me to re-select the area I want to blur. Grrrrrr

I'm sure I'll eventually get used to it, but it sure is an exercise in frustration for now!

Just upgraded to 11.4 on a few of
our XenDesktop 7.1 Virtual Machines.

Once you click on the Capture Button or the print Screen button on the keyboard
it starts to open what appears to be a tutorial the application crashes. The
Microsoft error states APPCRASH faulting on vd3d32.dll.

Installed this on XenDesktop 5.6 and it works perfectly. Both running windows 7
x64

I guess I'll roll back to 11.2! Please FIX!

I have been using Snagit since its earliest versions and have gone through a lot of changes, but i must say 11.4 has taken a step back in being useful.  Who moves the copy/copy all/ paste to the right hand side of the ribbon?  Rolling back to previous version.  I have work to do.

I don't like the new version. Step tool is your big change? Really?

The changes to the Snagit Editor are the most aggravating. I use the text tool all the time and now you moved it. Why? This is just mean.

I tried 11.4 for a few hours and then rolled back to 11.2, which was the last version I had saved. I don't need TechSmith moving stuff for no apparent reason. The new version is a fail for me. Frankly, 11.4 seems like change for change's sake. I have work to do and that doesn't include relearning what worked fine.

Unfortunately, I just recommended Snagit to one of my clients. I am sure he will be bothering me to explain your new UI which I have no interest in learning. Bad timing on my part. Unlikely I will recommend Snagit again. Yes, these changes do not sit well.

11.4 release is a terrible release.  I am a heavy snag it user, averaging 50 screen shots per day and I can say this is the worst release I ever seen since I started to use snag it many years ago. The worst thing is performance. suddenly taking a screen shot became sluggish and jumpy, I could not stand it!, second I don't know why it was decided to move the library to a different tab, when it was nice in teh right side! Terrible decisions. I had in fact to uninstall this version a get back to 11.2 as I could not find 11.3, which was very nice.
I am sure you guys can recover for this " windows Vista" release.

Please make available 11.3  for downgrading.

cheers

I think the fact Techsmith have had to issue a pdf to tell us where things are, speaks volumes.

I don't want to have to retrain to use a product I have been using since version 3. This is effectively what I have been doing for the past few days.  However today I have cracked and will be rolling back to version 11.0, which worked for me.

By all means, add whatever you want and tell us how it works.  Don't mess around with what is already implemented and working.  Have you heard the saying "if it ain't broke, don't fix it"?

I have had problems with the following:

Behaviour of the Call Outs this started in version 11.3 for me when the point of the call out became the anchor point when clicking and dragging to place the call out on the image.  It messed up all of my custom call out behaviours and I had to redefine them all.

Locating the text tool - what was the point of moving this feature into call outs.  It is not a call out.

Locating polygon - whilst I appreciate that you wanted to simplify the tools I do not see what significant simplification this achieved.  Those of us who use the tool now have to find it and add it manually.

Tagging images - again why was this removed?  It would appear that I also have to add this to the quick access bar.

Using tools that were on the view menu some of these appear to have been completely removed unless your pdf is incorrect.

Relocation of the cut, copy and paste tools - I have got the old location of the copy button implanted in my brain and am having to consciously having to make sure I go to the new location.  This change is the equivalent of swapping the gas and brake pedals on a car.  The only consolation is that I will not kill anyone by pressing the wrong button.

Alignment of objects - removed from ribbon, for what purpose?  Yes I know they are on the context menu  but I have had to find that out.

I would say this is more of a "Windows Millennium Edition" release than a "Vista" one but hey, the message is the same.

</END RANT>

Hi TechSmith

Okay, WRT the Library, I'm really hopeful that any changes will include an option that will allow the changed version of the library to remain.

I'm sure many here that are voicing complaints with the change will think I'm nuts for even saying this, but I rather like the fact that the Library isn't so "in your face". I like that it's still available, but tucked behind a tab. That allows me a cleaner interface with more room to make edits in the editor.

So if it's changed again, I'd love for the developers to consider an option that allows us to choose where the library should be. ;)

Cheers... Rick :)

Snagit 11.4.0 Copy All Button - Location and Confusion

I've upgraded to 11.4.0. I like how callouts now resize as you type. And the concept of auto-numbering Steps is nice.

But I don't like what has been done to the Copy All button. I would really like to see the Copy All button back on the left of the toolbar - it seems an unintuitive location now, and particularly confusing when objects are focussed.

And the function of Copy All has changed too. Previously, Copy All copied the entire image. Now, when a callout or some text has the focus, you get partial image copies or just the text copied. I realize that the ribbon tab changes as the focus changes, but I would expect a button labelled Copy All to copy all (entire image) regardless of selection.

A button that copies the current selection should just be labeled "Copy".

Thanks,
Peter

Oh, there's still a CopyAll button? They hid it so effectively, I figured that feature had just died.  Hey! I found it.  Yes. Moving it was a bad idea.   However, the CopyAll does work correctly for me, i.e. it really copies "all"

What happened to the alignment feature? It used to be that I could align to a specific object depending on which I selected first. Now it always aligns to the same object, regardless of which I chose first. Also, wasn't there a "distribute" command in the old Snagit? And, to the point of the commentator above, I had to search for the alignment funtion; it is now hidden under the right-click drop down.

I also have a suggestion - the numbered item feature is great but rotating the symbol should also rotate the text in all directions. I tried the yellow tear shaped numbering pointing downward but the text did not rotate with it. That's a big minus for that feature.

Keywords list cuts of text.

In Snagit 11.4, the drop-down list of keywords is too narrow, fails to display a tooltip showing any text cut off, and is not resizable horizontally.

Please take all three of those as needed enhancements.

Wish list: Please enhance Snagit experience on Tablet PCs.

I just installed the Snagit 11.4 update on my Tablet PC (Microsoft Surface Pro with Windows 8.1). And I wish it had better features for the use on touch devices.

1. Icons in the ribbon are very small and thus hard to use with fingers. There should be an icon to change Icon size for mouse or finger use (as there is in Office 2013).

2. Why do the Drawing Tools on the Tools tab use a dropdown menu? There is a lot of free space on the ribbon to the right of the tools. It would be easier to use the tool, if they were side by side instead of needing one more mouseclick in a Dropdown!

Thanks for continually improving Snagit.

I can't agree enough with this comment. The small and collapsed ribbon icons are a terrible idea. The default screen resolution on a Surface is 1920 by 1080 - do you really think that's not enough room for an expanded toolbar? I also have external monitors when I dock it, which also have a pretty high resolution. The fact that I can't even toggle back to "desktop" mode is just an ignorant design choice.

You killed the "Text" button (you made "Callout" and "Text" into just one button). Bad idea. Used to be
1. One click, Text is activated with my most recent font/color
2. One click, Callout is activated with my most recent graphics/font/color

Now to switch between Text and Callout I have to fuss around with the formatting every time.

I don't like having to go down to the Open Captures Tray to close an image now. I got used to closing it in the upper-right corner of the window. The Steps feature is not really complete. I would not only like to insert step numbers in sequence, but also a box to put an explanation in.

This is not really related to version 11.4, but it is a bothersome process. I like the timer for taking a screenshot. I use that often. However, I wish there was a button on the toolbar, or somewhere else quickly accessible, that turns the feature on and off. In WinSnap, this is the case. You can setup the feature in the setup or preferences, and simply turn it on and off with a button on the main window. I don't like having to go into a dialog box every time I want to turn the feature on and off.

Hi Lori.  With regard to your question about the timer option, I wonder if you're looking for a feature they took away (no surprise) in a past release and haven't brought it back.

Here is a post about the one-click time delay option I posted about a year ago: https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/one_click_time_delay_gone

Let me know if this is the feature you were looking for because we used to have it.

As you can see here, they make it a habit of introducing new "features" while taking away others and they don't take any action to try and resolve what we lost buy updating to the next release.

Hi there

If you look at the options, do you not have a profile that you can use? While it's not a "right-click" option, it's there for me on a regular mouse click.

Unfortunately I don't recall if that was a profile I created or if it was supplied as a default.

Thanks for your follow-up.  Yes, that is a pre-built time-delayed profile.

However, it used to be that I could do an ad-hoc time delay to any profile I had built in my Snagit. (refer to the link i described above)

My workaround now is to duplicate all my profiles with the time-delay option.

AND...now the whole "one-click" name doesn't really apply because now it's click one-click, click the profile group, and then click the time-delayed profile, and then CLICK to take a snagit!!

I ended up assigning a hot key to each of my most commonly used profiles because one-click is more frustrating that it's worth.

I just upgraded to 11.4.1 from 11.1 or .2 and was dismayed by the changes. I decided to see what feedback others were giving. I have to agree with this post and numerous others. I have been using SnagIt since version 5.x. As a QA Engineer, SnagIt is an integral part of my daily toolkit and I feel like someone removed or futzed with all my "go to" tools and my workflow. I use the tagging feature every day and my productivity is suffering with this "new" interface. I hope the Product Manager learns of this discord and requires DEV restore the prior functionality, even if as a "classic interface" for us power users.

You can add buttons to quickly tag with keywords or flags to your quick access toolbar. This video shows how: http://screencast.com/t/w6KOZLABWo.  Does this address your concern with the tagging workflow?

I have to agree with all of the complaints about 11.4. I felt like I was learning a new program.

Being a power user with over 50 images per day, I miss the UI from 11.3. I will not downgrade back to 11.3 because I'm sure my friends at TechSmith are furiously working on another upgrade that will be more like 11.3. Right? {please say yes!}

I like the new steps feature and use it alot but I would like to be able to add new items to the selection in the styles.

The new blur tool is a nice feature and I have used it a few times. What are the chances of getting a "smudge" tool so we can blend in the edges when needed?

I use keywords a lot and really do not like having to locate my new image in the library and then add the keywords from there. Can you change this so we can add keywords while the image is in the main window?

I'm looking forward to the next upgrade. I believe in TechSmith. Please don't take too long for the next update.

Am I the only one who cannot get CUSTOM SCROLLING to work? I need to capture screens that vertically scroll.  Doesn't work on Firefox, nor Chrome, nor IE.  I have 11.4.1, Build 195, Feb 5 2014.  Am working on a pc that is Win7, 64 bit.  I used to have a WinXP Pro machine with v8 on it that worked.  Now that I have a 64 bit machine, the most current SnagIt version isn't working.  Do I have any options other than pulling my XP machine out of the closet?

Snagit 11.4 (Windows) was the most frustrating release I've installed in a long time.
First of all, I do not like the "more convenient" toolbar. It wasn't more convenient, it was simply a change, and that change was a nuisance, always hanging there on my screen.

Second, a very basic item, the delete item on the file menu was omitted entirely. How could someone be so daft as to overlook such a basic item from any release?  I use the delete item on a daily basis.

Users, including myself, have asked for certain features to be added such as the elmination of the 3 second countdown, and the ability to save videos in some other format than .mp4 up to 2 years ago, and I didn't notice that either of these features have been addressed, though many users have added their comments saying these are features that they also desire.

version 11.4 won't even let you do a rollback to a previous version properly. I kept getting 2753 errors after uninstalling and trying to reinstall version 11.1.

I finally rolled back my windows 7 machine to a restore point prior to installing version 11.4 and even then I had to do a repair install of 11.1 to get it to work properly again.

I'm very frustrated with all of the problems with the 11.4 release ("region captures" was broken with 11.4.0 I understand, and now the delete function was left off from 11.4.1)
I've pretty much had it with these bad releases and do not consider them to be upgrades at all, merely developers mucking around with an already fine product and breaking things with each release they put out going forward.

Am I the only person who cannot get the CUSTOM SCROLL to work with vertical scrolls?  I find this VERY disappointing.

why would anyone install update 11.4.2 when 11.4.0 broke things like regional capture, and version 11.4.1 left off the delete funtion from the file menu? What does 11.4.2 break...? Every release seems to have problems of its own.... why are they sending out updates that contain problems, bugs, and broken features again and again...? I along with many others have had it with Techsmith's Snagit updates that keep breaking things and causing additional problems. It's kinda like Obamacare, you've got to install it to find out what else it breaks....

As far a just going to the "submit a request tab", that's no guarantee that Techsmith will deem any request to be worthy of being added to Snagit There are requests that many people have asked for, some going back for 2 years which have never been addressed or added to any release. Just submitting a request does not mean it will ever be added to any future release of Snagit as I've learned by personal experience.

Like many others posting, SnagIt was such a reliable product for so long, than starting with v11, while "cool" functionality was added, the basics seemed to get minimized. We use hundreds of copies of this in a production type environment, the number of clicks to do something is critical.  Allowing basic things like customizing the ribbon, even to rearrange it so the individuals can put it where they think it should be, increases speed. One of the most basic "MS Office" type features" cant get added to the list to improve.  And now... it seems 'Speed to market' has trumped good CAT testing.  This is a sure way to make us Corporate IT types wanting to hold off on renewing maintenance.  New features that can enhance productivity will get us Kudo's, breaking things or reducing functionality will get us fired ! So now we have to invest in our own CAT regression test, which is way to expensive for utility software....  You all have been such a great provider and so consistent you have gotten to enjoy some great sales growth. Might be time to circle back to the basics before you "grow yourself out of business"...
