New version of Snagit (Windows and Mac) available today; Retiring Jing Pro

The biggest news is that Snagit now lets you record MPEG-4 video! This video is extremely shareable, meaning it's easy to record a quick video (sharing feedback, explaining a process, asking a question) and send it on to wherever you need it. There's new Twitter and YouTube outputs, and we've also created an output to Evernote.

Unlike Jing Pro, Snagit doesn't have a 5-minute limit on videos. Speaking of Jing Pro...we're going to phase out the Pro subscriptions. If you have Jing Pro today, you still be able to use it through February 28, 2013. To be extra clear, if you're using the free version of Jing, nothing will change. Jing Pro users can continue to use Jing Pro (without getting changed again) for one year. One year from today, Jing Pro will revert to the free version.

There's a lot more information on the TechSmith website. For example,

Jing Pro had just the features I wanted and needed and more importantly had the price I wanted. With Jing Pro, I have higher quality video than in the free version, I don't know if I want to pay more to get Snaggit just for that.

If you'd like, try the fully functional Snagit trial. I'd be curious to see if the video feature, plus the additional other features like many ways to edit images, scrolling capture, blur, ability to save images in non-png format might be of interest to you. No pressure! Just wanted to make sure you knew there was a trial. http://www.techsmith.com/snagit

Ok, I'm playing around with Snagit and I've figured out how to set up different profiles so that I can use ftp with multiple sites like I've been doing all along with Jing Pro. How can I make Snagit copy to my clipboard a customized URL that I can paste into an Instant message or a helpdesk email like I've been so used to doing with Jing?

So far, the only thing that I'm truely happy to see is the blur tool in Snagit, it fills my need for a redaction tool that I'd inquired about in Jing Pro quite a long time ago. Otherwise the rest of the arrows and other annotation tools don't really phase me much.

All the additional output accessories for MS Office seem to me a waste of resources, if someone can't figure how to paste an image from their clipboard they need to learn to use their computers.

I'll try to make the transition from Jing Pro to Snagit because I do need the better video quality that I would be losing when Jing Pro goes away, but I can't help seeing that you are forcing us users to adopt a software that took us from a fairly streamlined UI that had just what we needed to a new software that has way more than necessary and at a price that is nearly 3x the cost of our comfortable software.

I want to know this too!

Your post says there is no 5 minute limitation but I doubt if its unlimited. What is the time/storage limitation on a MPEG-4 video file captured in Snag-it Version 11?

Hi!

Thanks for the question.

We didn't specify a hard limit on the recording duration because the length you can record depends on a lot of factors including the region and activity you're recording (larger, more quickly-changing subjects are going to require more space and require a higher amount of processing), how much hard drive space you have (we have to have space on your machine to store the data, of course!), etc..

I can tell you that with a machine following the system requirements for Snagit 11 that we have on our website ( http://www.techsmith.com/snagit-syste... ), I haven't found a limit for my needs. My advice would be to push to recording to the length you need; I am optimistic we can take care of them. If for some unforeseen reason we can't, let us know about it - we would want to help you in this unlikely scenario.

I hope this helps! Let me know if you have any questions.

Snagit doesn't seem to have an output option to save video to my dropbox folder and send a custom video code to my clipboard. Am I missing where it is?

Dave, thanks for the question! I regret that we don't currently have a dropbox output. We will definitely keep this in mind for future considerations, though!

Hi Larry, I don't need dropbox support specifically--just the ability to save a video to a specific folder on my Mac and have it copy a custom video code to my clipboard. Exactly what Jing Pro's "Save" button offers right now.

Dave, I'm sorry that I misunderstood.

Unfortunately, you are correct; we don't currently have sending the custom code to the clipboard as an option. If it becomes something that we begin hearing a lot of requests for, it could very well be something we add in the future. In the meantime, we'll gladly take your feedback into consideration.

Having JUST renewed my Jing Pro membership, I'm a bit frustrated. I don't use Jing often, but when I do, it's perfect. I don't need more, and I specifically "went Pro" so I could use the Save button - which, according to doomsdave's post, isn't even available in Snagit. And, at $50, it would take me 3+ years to "pay for" Snagit with the annual savings by not renewing Jing. (Of course, without the Save button, I don't see any value in Snagit.)

I suggest offering an upgrade path of $15 off Snagit for those of us who are already on Jing Pro - kind of a Jing Pro refund for upgrading. Then I might be interested in trying Snagit.

BTW, I do NOT appreciate being forced to use a "social network" to talk to you.

Steve,

I am sorry to hear that you are frustrated. I want to make sure you know that you will have your Jing Pro service for another full year. We are not retiring Jing Pro until February 28, 2013. We will continue to support Jing Pro for the next year.

Here's a page with a few more details:
http://www.techsmith.com/jing-pro-ret...

As for your upgrade solution, it's funny you should mention that! As a Jing Pro customer, you should have already received (on the day of the announcement, an e-mail that offers Snagit to you for $25 (of course, I encourage you to still download the Snagit trial to make sure it's right for you, which you can find at http://www.techsmith.com/download/sna.... If you have not received that e-mail, or can't find it, please don't hesitate to contact our customer service department at the link in the following paragraph.

Finally, I'm sorry for the confusion where you felt like you needed to contact us via Get Satisfaction; we are more than happy and have people who'd love to help you in Customer Service or TechSupport either over the phone or via e-mail. You can find their contact information here: http://www.techsmith.com/contact.html . In addition, if you'd like to e-mail me directly for additional, you're more than welcome to. My e-mail address is l.lahaie@techsmith.com.

Oh! In addition, there definitely is a "Save" button in Snagit - you can even configure it to save without any further action needed as soon as you take your image or video capture! Unfortunately, it is missing an additional feature that doomsdave needs, but I would recommend giving that trial a shot in order to see if we can meet your needs. I'm extremely optimistic that it will.

I was prompted this morning to upgrade my Jing Pro, trusting TechSmith I went ahead and upgraded only to be DOWNGRADED, it took away my JingPro and put Jing Free in it's place and told me to purchase Snag it. I just paid for my subscription a week ago, and they gladly took my money and did not tell me about this. So I just threw away $15. I am grad student and don't have an extra $50 bucks laying around to put on Snag it. I am angry. I feel like I have been cheated. I liked my Jing Pro, it was simple. I have used Snag it before and while it does what I need I liked Jing Pro much better. I can live with switching to Snag It but to be forced into it by taking away my Jing Pro that I could have continued to use? Shame on you Tech Smith, that is a forced upgrade that lines your pockets. You may have just lost a customer unless you can offer a satisfactory resolution like giving me my money back, or my JingPro.

Hi Schwabby,

I just responded to your other post about this issue: http://goo.gl/QJ33U

Based on this message and your other post, it sounds like something went wrong with your software update to Jing -- after upgrading to the latest version of Jing you should still have access to the Jing Pro features until February 28, 2013.

If you file a ticket in our support system (http://support.techsmith.com/) someone will make sure this is resolved in a way that's satisfactory for you.

I'm sorry you've had a bad experience due to the Jing Pro retirement.

Are you kidding me? Your software tells me there is an update, so I install it and then you take the pro version away from me and tell me I can use the free version or pay for a new software? Are you aware of the economy? I want my Jing Pro back! I just paid for another full year of Jing Pro. You take my money then take away my subscription?
Any one reading this....DON'T UPGRADE YOUR JING PRO!

I have this same problem. I just renewed Jing Pro on Feb 16, 2012. I just launched Jing today and there was an alert about Jing Pro retiring but then I lost all Jing Pro features. I can only record in SWF format and when I click on (Manage Account) nothing happens and my account email address is gone. I was able to upload after authenticating twice.

How can I get the Jing Pro features back? I understand I should still have those features until Feb 28, 2013.

Also, how about offering Jing Pro and/or Snagit or Camtasia users a discount on Snagit Mac? That would be much appreciated.

Thanks,
Derek

I am running Jing 2.6.58671 (latest) on a MacBook Air running Mac OS X 10.6.8.

When I click on (Manage Account) the entire preferences windows simply closes.

Hi Derek,

You're right, you should have Jing Pro until Feb. 28, 2013.

I'm not sure what's going on in your case, and I can certainly understand how this would be frustrating.

The best way to resolve this would be to file a ticket with our support department at http://support.techsmith.com/. Someone should respond within one business day.

Sorry for the trouble,
Glenn

I, along with others, are very disappointed that TechSmith is forcing users to move to another product to get "additional" features that they think we need. I use JingPro daily, and really enjoy the occasional use of the video recording.

Being that Jing is a locally-installed glorified copy/paste application, it's too similar to anti-virus software in that it regularly checks for an active subscription. Anti-Virus/Anti-Spyware companies have a lot more room for requiring subscriptions simply because there is constant research done to prevent and remove global threats.

An application like this should not require an active subscription, that way it's optional for users to upgrade or move to another product when they choose to, not when a company decides it's right for their customers.

Perhaps if customers knew the real reason as to why the force from JingPro, we'd know if exe's at TechSmith are merely greedy after capturing an audience.

I can no longer recommend TechSmith products to anyone

I preferred the user-interface, -experience, and simplicity of Jing Pro.

There was a hotkey for image capture.
I could resize the window after I created it.
It would auto-send to screencast and paste the shortcut in my clipboard.
It was mpeg4.
It wasn't complicated like SnagIt (though I'm sure SnagIt customers love all the features).

... what was there not to love.

Can you force image capture to one hotkey and video capture to another?
I see "Global Capture" is set to "PrtScn" which is great, but it defaults to the "last capture type" ... well most of the time I won't remember what that is. Not a problem for Jing Pro, since you can change the type after the select ... but I can't do that in SnagIt.

I did find the Screencast setup; that's better.

mpeg4 I just mentioned because it's my biggest reason for not just using Jing Free.

The complexity is my biggest problem. I don't need flexibility; I need simplicity. If I wanted something more complex I could go with one of the other options out there. I liked Jing because it was ridiculously quick and simple (you guys did a great job with it).

Sorry. I don't mean this to sound like a gripe session. Think of it as a compliment about how much I love Jing. :) I've referred friends countless times.

Also, I don't care for the fact that the window can't be resized/moved after it's created ... am I just missing something there, too?

Hi Tim,

SnagIt 11 can set a keyboard shortcut on a per-profile basis, so yes, you can set one shortcut for image captures and another one for video. You just right-click on the capture profile in question and choose Set Hotkey, like so:

Cool. Thanks for the info.

That just leaves me with two major issues.
1. Complexity - which I know is a "feature" for most SnagIt users, and you can't do anything about.
2. Resizing / Moving the window selection after it's been made. (Is there a way to do that?)

Jing Pro was so simple.  Now it's gone.  Snagit is complex overkill.  I just want mp4 with Jing back.  I've paid for Snagit.  Keep my money. Can't I simply have mp4 with Jing Pro back?

Wow, sounds like Tech Smith customers are PISSED off and so am I. I don't mind paying for SnagIt. Had it for years, reliable and easy to use like Jing. I have Camtasia as well and it works well. Have to use Jing most of the time anyway because SnagIt locks up and don't want to have to interrupt my work to reboot the computer to get SnagIt to work again. I have overseas staff and not having a reliable screen recorder is a big problem for me.

TechSmith has taken two great program SnagIt 8 or 9 and Jing Pro and replaced them with SnagIt 11.2. I guess this is TechSmith's Windows Vista.

In particular, control keys operations are iffy, sometimes it stops recording and sometimes it doesn't. Shift F10 is hard to hit on some Microsoft keyboard with the small function keys.

Recording window often doesn't even open.

Hope they fix SnagIt soon, but right now, it is driving me to drink. Anyone for a nightcap?

Hey Techsmith,

What would it actually cost you to just leave Jing Pro features active for Jing Pro users?

I don't understand why you have abandoned Jing -- but that's your prerogative. What I REALLY DON'T UNDERSTAND is why you have de-activated the Jing Pro features for those of use who paid for Jing Pro? What does it really cost you to leave me the ability to save to MP4 ?? (it costs you nothing!)

Camtasia is not a replacement for Jing. The Jing UI was beautifully simplistic and I could switch between my webcam or my screen -- it was fun and elegant.

Please re-activate Jing Pro features.
