There is no way to report SPAM or unwanted/abusive posts in the forum.

We cannot even contact moderators/employees to report them.

What are we supposed to do?

Just ignore them. The moderators do delete them.

But I do agree that they are a damn nuisance, clogging up your email and I wish Techsmith would do something to stop them.  Adobe use the same getsatisfaction platform but I don't get any spam from them, so it must be possible.

Adobe uses GetSatisfaction? I'm very active in Adobe forums. But the forums I use are powered by the Jive platform. I recall much wailing and gnashing of teeth among Adobe supporters when it happened.

Interesting. I've pinged my contacts over in the Adobe sphere to get a definitive answer on this. Seems like some serious support fragmentation if you ask me. But then again, I'm sure the number of Photoshop users dwarfs the number of SnagIt/Camtasia users. ;)

Unfortunately it's largely out of our control. I have a feature request open with Get Satisfaction that would allow users to flag items for review, but it's not implemented or even planned. I'm guessing that Adobe has more staff who review all of their content and are faster about taking it down than we are. For now, Paul's advice is probably the best...just ignore it.

That being said, if there's something we've missed, if you post a link in this thread, I will monitor this thread and review anything that anyone adds.

Adobe has a program known as "Community Experts" that are granted the ability to remove or edit or flag inappropriate posts. And given that Adobe has about a hundred or so different products, that community is quite large. I know I have that ability as a Community Expert for two of their many products. So it's quite handy to report and delete posts.

Mmm. Frustrating when obvious and frequently requested requirements for software are not implemented or not even planned, isn't it?

If you do happen to can Get Satisfaction (which, with its many and varied limitations (the absence of spam reporting being just one) would be far from the worst thing to happen), could I suggest that some thought be given to a MUCH improved method for Requests for Enhancement (RFEs)?

At present someone has an idea. If they forget to flag the thing as an "idea" it never gets voted on anyway. Someone else sees the same need 2 months later. Maybe they'll see the earlier post if they stumble upon the same keywords by chance, probably they won't. They might raise an idea. It gets 5 votes. In the meantime the thread gets buried under "How do I?" threads and is never seen again. Four months later someone else has the same need... fast forward, (after rendering of course because you can't play back in the editor at variable speed)... 5 years later someone else sees the same need which still hasn't been implemented, and...

You end up with a stack of people having the same basic idea, but the ideas and any votes are scattered across a dozen different threads so that the need for any given enhancement may appear to be less than it actually is.

If RFEs were hived off into a separate area, distinct from user discussion / Q&A type threads which included keywording and categorisation, this would be far less of an issue.

This is a noble idea to have a Report Spam thread but sadly I don't foresee it doing anything Unless it is a sticky post or in the sidebar somewhere for people to see.

After a few days of posts it will be buried and no one will even no it exists.

Good idea though :)

I think it's safe to say that the last post in this thread, replying to a one year old post about whether C9 can be installed on a 32 bit machine with a link to an alleged HP printer support site, is at best spam and at worst a malware installer.

Have getsatisfaction not heard of:

a) Captcha/Recpatcha
b) Invisible Recaptcha
c) 2 Factor Authentication

A lot easier to implement than a user reporting system

Oh please, don't inflict Captcha on us. It's the most odious, detestable, user-hateful system ever created. A squiggle of ambiguous lines and dots that are incomprehensible to human visitors but which bots can cut through like a hot knife through butter.

It was on a site that I co-administer (NOT my choice), and the spambots just kept coming in waves. What stopped it for us was a plugin which required a random question which was simple for real people but hard for bots.

2 factor authentication would work well enough but there would likely be some customer push-back; "Why do you want my phone number?"

I don't think most of these are actually bots. I think they're people in third-world countries who do this. Because they're really people, it makes it harder to block them in some automated fashion. Sadly, most of the things you would want to do to to make it harder for spammers to post would also make it more difficult for legitimate users to post. I don't think the volume of spam we currently see is worth taking dramatic action over.

Yes were getting a bit over run with Spam these days.

Heres the part that kills me about it. There's really not that much of it.

Get Satisfaction needs a moderator to approve posts from new users. Problem solved.

Adobe forums don't have this problem. I got frustrated when moderators didn't post my questions right away. Sundays were the worst time to ask a question.

After asking a few questions. You gain their trust and you can post questions immediately.

Then I added an image, moderators took another look.Delayed my post, made me mad.

But you know what, No SPAM, no Nonsense on the Adobe forums.They run a pretty tight outfit.

Get Satisfaction??? The website goes haywire for days, no explanation for strange e-mails popping up in my in box. A regular Wild West of WTF happened and the answer is.
None of your business.

Totally agree.

It would be a shame to delay new users' posts for moderation, but that's the name of the game these days - until your first post is moderated, you are not trusted.  It's what I do on all my wordpress sites.

Until theres a better way. Theres another way to look at it, if the forum is free to begin with.What exactly are you complaining about?

Spam in my mailbox that I cannot mark as spam because it will block all, that's what.  The forum isn't free, it's part of the after sales service that any software vendor is expected to provide, to support their customers, as part of the purchase price.

The forum is free to you.You didn't pay to join.If you paid an additional fee, I would consider that quite different.You could opt out.Still could, as far as that goes.

Oh sure you can split hairs and say you paid for it because you purchased the software.
But you don't really have say in how its run. You can complain, send a e-mail.
That's about it. It's not like purchasing something outright. You really don't have much control whatsoever.

I've been participating in forums of different kinds for more than 20 years now.

I'm only one of a virtual army of forum moderators over on the Adobe side. I can attest that actually, the Adobe forums have indeed suffered many SPAM attacks over the years. Usually we have seen them in late night hours or especially on weekends. I'm not sure if that was suggestive of people in remote parts of the world operating or if it was that they were hoping at those hours nobody would notice.

At one point there must have been some kind of software being used to make the posts because posts would appear and flood the forums faster than they could be deleted. Quite amazing to watch unfold.

It's generally improved overall, but we do still see posts slip through.

I've never ran into a SPAM attack in the Premier Pro, After Effects, Audition or Illustrator forums. I've been a member for a very long time.

So digging up and sighting  rare  occasions, is a petty comparison. "IMO"

Get Satisfaction is a JOKE by Comparison. And you shouldn't be comparing the 2.

Why not compare the performance a i7-8700 CPU to a Single core GPU produced in 2000 while you're at it? Back when you saw that SPAM in Adobes forum.

I think it's safe to say that the alleged "Janny Watson", who pulled a couple of paragraphs from Joe Morgan's post, then added a list of safe mode bullet points, then added a highly suspect link, is a spammer: https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/you-broke-my-laptop

The same is true for each post from the alleged "Ceciclia Garcia", who responds to every post about missing files with a link to an Android phone recovery piece of malwar... er, I mean, "application". Although admittedly he / she / it neglected to include the actual link in their most recent "reply". It's hardly worth spamming when you do that.

The best one and I think it was in here was a post from two entitled girls with a link to a gofundme page where they were trying to raise $3000 for a shopping trip because they deserved it. I raised hell with gofund me too. I found that just a bit irksome.

If they spent the time identifying the spammers that they do on moral superiority,  they could identify the origins and start building something that would block them.. 
There are some neat tricks a couple of hilarious ones that were built into VBB modules years ago that handled issues like this

I look at it like this.
This is a bargain basement  website.
If there were a 24/7 moderator looking for these fly by night Spammers and squashing them.We wouldn't be doing their job for them.Which is BS.
That's how you control SPAM. And Get Satisfaction refuses to come up with a plan to address the it.
That's the way I see it.

And every time we help them, were enablers. Our seeds have grow into a beautiful plant of Get Satisfaction euphoria.Where they don't take responsibility for their website, I'm thinking they may have been following that link for years. That's why they don't seem to care or do anything to change the situation.

I can't get no satisfaction.  The site is pathetic.  My profile won't allow me to be selective about which TechSmith products I am notified about and I have started getting them for all products for the last two weeks,  About 80 emails a day!

So stop doing it. I got totally disgusted the other day. Someone made an error and I used a humorous whipping graphic that I have used before. Apparently they have outsourced moderation to  a fanatical religious sect so no more humor

I saw that graphic, it was over the top. I don't blame them for removing it.I'm thinking inappropriate for young children. If nothing else, capable of upsetting a parent or 2.

To be honest, theres to many images of Spam Burgers and cutesy graphics that serve no real propose being posted. 
It's gotten old. I don't mind throwing in a GIF that states my state of mind once in a while.But I usually leave a comment along with my Gif/image. But being bombarded with images in my inbox, with no context except for, just for the fun of it?

Hmmm, making me wonder what the difference is. I have subscribed to the forums where I get messages about posts. But I've never seen images flood my inbox. I have to click and read the message via the web browser in order to see any images.

Perhaps it's a preference in GetSatisfaction?

Not ruining the forum, just taking it to far at times.

I appreciate a little humor here and there. But  it's like you and Rick Stone both can't help yourselves at times.
Posting images responses that don't contribute anything meaningful to the conversation at hand.

If it's a conversation I've contributed to.I receive feedback .So no Rick Stone, it doesn't appear as an image in my mailbox until I open it.But then I see you've posted nothing of meaning. And that gets old in a hurry.

If everyone started copying and pasted images they Googled for entertainment purposes. This forum would become a endless collage and a nightmare .

If you take the time to post a message of where your coming from. Then, occasionally post an image or GIF fits right in.

I think that's both creative and acceptable.

I'm not saying stop, just tone it down.

So no Rick Stone, it doesn't appear as an image in my mailbox until I open it.
It also depends on the client. My Techsmith account dates back to the stone age and is linked to a POP server. That means that it's one of the few things that I still use Outlook for.

By default images in e-mails that I receive in Outlook are just placeholders which don't download at all unless I click at the top and explicitly tell Outlook to download them. Except, of course, when I have the site white listed which I do with Get Satisfaction, that digital contradiction in terms.

As soon as I preview the mail or open it, whoomp, spam meat images in all their glory. It didn't so much annoy me - it's near impossible to get mad at Rick Grunwald - but yes, I could do with it being toned down a bit too. It's not just the images, it's the sheer volume of unnecessary e-mails it can create on a bad day.

FWIW, I manage these emails with two (Outlook) rules.
  1. If From = noreply.techsmith@getsatisfaction.com move to "Get Satisfaction" Folder
  2. If subject contains "new comment" or "new reply" AND from = noreply.techsmith@getsatisfaction move to "Action Needed" folder
The first one is the catch-all for new posts, the second one helps me get to the important replies in threads I'm following.

I guess everyone has their things that bother them. For me, one of those niggles is endlessly looping animations. And for anyone else that is interested and using the Google Chrome Browser, there is an add in available for Chrome that is named "Animation Policy" that seems to work a treat. ;)
