I have bought two versions and an upgrade over the years and have always considered Snagit a valuable tool in my work. I get very angry, however, when installing a program does things behind my back that it should not. When I installed Snaggit 10 it set my default printer to be Snagit. This is totally unnecessary and NOT the transparency that TechSmith seems to claim caring about. Any more of that and I will switch to another product next time.

Thank you for reporting this issue. We have tried to reproduce this issue and haven't been able to, we haven't heard of this problem before. Would you mind sharing some details about your environment so that we could get more information about this issue.

What OS have you seen the changing of the default printer on? What kind of printers do you have on the system that you saw this behavior on, are they directly attached or are they indirectly attached( via network for example? Do you have just 1 printer or multiple printers?

I am having a similar problem too. I have been a licensed user for years. Love my Snagit.

My default printer is set to my local HP laser printer and it keeps getting switched back to the Snagit printer behind the scenes. It is getting annoying to have to keep resetting it.

I saw another user is having the same issue in a more recent post (Pierre Laporte in the post "printer by default").

I am running Windows 7 Pro SP1 and Snagit 10.0.1 (b58) - single license. I have about a dozen printer drivers installed, including several hardware printers of different brands, Send to OneNote 2007, Fax printers, PDF drivers etc. Some are local, some are network.

Anything else you need to know to help us fix it?

One thing for sure that would workaround the issue that you are seeing would be to remove the Snagit printer.

You would lose the ability to print to the Snagit printer to get a capture into Snagit that way. Just to be clear, you won't lose the ability to print images from within Snagit, that is not the same as the "Snagit printer"

I believe you can remove the Snagit printer using Windows control panel or you can uninstall/reinstall Snagit ( make sure you keep your database and settings during the uninstall ) and the Snagit printer is a optional component during the install.

Our latest version of 10.0 is 10.0.2 so make sure if you do re-install, download that also.

Thanks for taking the time to report this, your description of your printing environment will help us when we try to reproduce and fix this bug.

Hey guys, I found the solution. I posted it over on the other post but I'll copy it here FYI:

I have found the answer to this problem. It is nothing to do with SnagIt. Whew!

It was some problem (no idea what) with my default printer driver.

We have a shared HP laser printer which is our network default printer for all office operations, it is sitting on another machine, everyone has it set as their default printer. My machine which uses this printer as default is the only one having the problem with the default printer flicking to SnagIt after every reboot. I removed the SnagIt printer from my devices & printers but after that on the reboot I found the default printer was set at a different printer again. Once again it had flicked off the HP laser but now it was onto the next random printer!

This gave me the clue that it was nothing to do with SnagIt and most likely a problem with my HP printer driver - even though it's been working fine for the last coupla years! So I deleted the HP laser printer off my machine, rebooted, and reattached it from the network. next reboot: same problem, no longer the default.

Solution

The final solution is to remove the printer from your own machine, go to the server machine and remove the printer from there (I rebooted everything just to be sure) then reattach the printer on the server machine, then go back to my own machine and re attach the printer. On reboot: it stays as default! All fixed!

I have since found online that I'm not the only one that this solution works for this problem.

Hope this helps

As Jacqueline indicates it may well be completely unrelated to Snagit. Unlike Jacqueline, once I reassigned the default printer the problem did not reoccur. Hopefully it won't happen again on the next upgrade.
