Not happy about the major changes in stock presets from v10 to v11

Hello -

Our company recently upgraded to SnagIt v11 and we're all considering going back to v10. The biggest gripe is that all the stock presets were removed. Annotations, arrows, lines, boxes, etc., have all been re-done. The colors were dumbed down (nothing is bright anymore, it's all a dull shade of its former self) and the fonts, IMHO, are completely unsuitable corporate communications/technical writing. I mean Kristin ITC and Jokerman? Seriously? Maybe for a birthday card or something..

I use SnagIt on a daily basis during my work week for the last 2 1/2 and I've even bought a copy for home since it was so awesome. I use it towrite software requirements, do screen mockups, draw/modify UI elements, provide visual troubleshooting assistance, annotate policies and procedures, etc.

If I can get all the stock presets, not my quick styles, those are there, I'm talking about the base presets that were in v10 pushed to v11 that would majorly help otherwise as a company we're going to go back to using v10 and hope v12 brings back some of the more professional looking styles. If there's any kind of hack I can use to get the old styles back WITHOUT MANUALLY RECREATING THE 20 OR SO I USE ROUTINELY that would be great. Sorry for the caps, but I already got an answer of "you can re-create them" and I think that's a silly way to go about it PLUS it adds extra clicks in my work flow as I can't just click my preferred first row of styles, now I'm expanding the styles and clicking on my quick styles.. 2 extra clicks. When you've put 4,952 captures through the program since 2010, that's a lot of time and hassle especially when you're using boxes, arrows AND callouts on the same image.

Unhappy.

There's no way that I'm aware of that will bring back the v10 presets without doing it manually and adding as Quick Styles. I also happen to agree with you that these v10 presets were better. I have recreated the ones I liked and have no idea of the reasoning behind this change.

If nothing else it would be nice to have a preset file that one could share and bring them all back as quick styles but unfortunately that's not available either.

You can have both versions installed and use whichever one you like at a time. They can't both be running at the same time however. At the very least that's a workaround that is easy.

Thanks for your reply Manny and the agreement that the v10 styles were better. ;)

I'm checking into this too. I'm not sure if a hack is a good idea, but let me see...

I think the best thing is if you have a snagproj from Snagit 10, slap on the 20 you like and open the snagproj with Snagit 11. You can then right-click each item and add it this way. It's faster than trying to recreate, but I understand it's not ideal.

I also tend to agree that anything you consciously added as a QuickStyle should be at the top, and not an extra click below.

Thanks for the feedback,
Mike Curtis

Update: There is NOT a way to somehow hack the objects such as arrows, callouts, etc. from a prior version of Snagit into Snagit 11. These are generated in the code, not something like Stamps which are just a referenced set of images.

Sorry for the bad news, but it looks like recreation or pulling in a .snag from a prior version is the only way to go at this time.

The feedback and your passion are really appreciated.

Well, bummer. I was really hoping the presets acted like the stamps... :(

Mike, I like the idea of putting everything in a .snag file, that will work as far as being able to more easily get them added to my quick styles.

However, !! developers !!, please keep in mind that this change just jacked with a really good work flow. No longer can I just click the type of shape I want and go, now I have to click the type of shape, click the "Expand" down arrow, then click my style. An extra click, I know, big deal right? But with the # of snag's I take, usually they have multiple annotations / arrows / whatever so I'm looking at 14,916 extra clicks or 4.14 extra hours clicking (at 1 second per click).

What would be nice Mike is if the user could arrange the sequence of those presets in the styles box. Even you select quick styles they always end up at the bottom. Let's face it the reason you add stuff to quick styles is because that's what you like. And what you like you tend to use often and it would be more convenient at top.

I didn't mean a hack of the presets [although I'd like to] but a way to bring quick styles into the mix. In a company it would be nice to send a file around rather than having everybody recreate styles on every single machine.

What do you mean by a snagproj Mike? Are you talking about a capture saved as a .SNAG file?

+1 for being able to customize the order in which styles appear. Drag and drop would be awesome.

Also +1 for being able to export and share presets but that might be taking it too far... ;)

Hi,
Yes, I mean .snag and somehow I added the proj like on the Mac version.

I'll even go a step further (developers will love this) but I like the idea of having the ability to have my own top row where I could drop in my favorite arrow, favorite couple of callouts, a shape, and maybe even a stamp.

In other words, you could have your "Favorite Lineup" and it wouldn't matter what tool you had selected.

Someone on another thread suggested the ability to add a specific callout to the Quick Access toolbar. I thought that was a neat idea too.

Thanks for your patience, gentlemen.

Good news!
One of our developers, Chris G, has been aware of this thread and the other night he sent out a link to something he'd been tinkering with. He's created an .exe file that will install all the old objects--arrows, callouts, lines, etc. After installing, it defaults to the "old" row in the interface like it would look in versions 9 and 10.

Download it from here: http://techsmith.custhelp.com/app/ans...

(It's a little hard to see the link, so here's a screenshot just in case: http://www.screencast.com/t/tsGyJQYpdv )

Hooray Chris!

Outstanding!

Well done and thank you Chris. It's exactly what I was missing.

Now if y'all could create a way to put items in the top row exactly how I want that would be perfect.

Thanks Mike.

Another app I use, MindManager, has "Packages" to handle content. To retain old content you just keep the old content folders and add the file path to a "Packages" section in the UI. Would be good for Snagit to implement something similar as a way to manage default and shared content

you can do the same thing now by saving your content in whichever folder you like. and it can be seen with Snagit's search pane. If you use the built in tags then you can have content in different categories if you like just like you show for Mind Manager. It looks to me that Snagit can do this already.

FANTASTIC! This is excellent that we don't have to manually add these now and it's exactly what I was looking for. Still adds in an extra click on certain circumstances but I can live with that. Change is good.

Developers and companies that listen are better. Nice job all around !!

I've installed Snagit 11 -- I don't like any of the new styles. How do I get back the Snagit 10 styles? Very unhappy customer.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled

Thanks, Moderator, for merging my complaint into this thread. I couldn't have said it better than Brian Drain.

I will follow up on the suggestions.

Disastrous default shape styles, and there is no way to customize that monstrocity of useless non-transparent default styles. SnagIt 10 had much better styles. I'm switching back, as I don't want to recreated styles and constantly look at those useless defaults.

Wish I would have found this sooner. Thank you! I'm generally a fan of updated and changing software, but this was too much of a step in the wrong direction. The old styles are much better in 75% of the tools.

In case you found this page looking for the tool that TechSmith created for importing the styles from SnagIt 10 into SnagIt 11, it's been moved to here:

https://support.techsmith.com/entries/22825891-Snagit-Callouts-and-Arrows-in-version-10-missing-in-version-11

I was pulling my hair out trying to find it since the old location is offline.  SnagIt is one of my favorite products in the history of computing, but those new styles in v11 are awful compared to the older ones.  Hopefully they listen to their customer base and bring back the old in the next version.

+1 for customizing style order or having a favorites box. I use semi-transparent, yellow polygons multiple times a day and the multiple clicks is frustrating. Feature: Right click the style and have move to top as an option.
