One way to stop the drawing of Waveforms

In Camtasia 8 for Win when open a previously saved project, is there any way to stop the drawing of the waveforms? I got several projects that include up to 15 hours of video and when are opened I have to wait almost an hour until all waveforms are completely drawn on the timeline. The HD activity don't stops till this job be ready.

I too have noticed that representing waveforms is one of the biggest detriments in performance of Camtasia. In fact, in my first project, which was using source files hosted on a slow 100 MB/s platter drive, I actually crashed the software twice just from sliding the timeline zoom to show more of the project at once. Thankfully, this hasn't happened with my faster platter drive, SSD, or RAMdisk.

Anyways, most of the time, I do not need an overview of my waveforms. Perhaps a checkbox that would allow the software to bypass these things most of the time (including on load), that we could check when we actually needed to see the waveform would be a way to allow us to load/edit our projects even faster without having to sacrifice the sometimes necessary tool of waveform display.

I don't get into projects as long as OPer, but I too do not need 15 mins of audio displayed to edit my video, or when I actually need to see the waveform within a 10 second segment for timing's sake.

Thank you very much for your reply. Exactly! While the waveform is being drawn nothing can be done. Only when HD led stops is possible perform any command, otherwise the project crashes! So, I'm understanding that actually there is no way to stop the process. You are proposing a resource that still is not implemented.

Is not always that a project is opened that exists a need to see the waveform. In this case, the best feature to be improved could be a button that commands [Show waveform]. Then, by default the project could be opened without showing the waveform, and only when the User press this button the complete waveform should be showed. This button would reside only in tracks that contains audio or video or be allocated to show only the waveform to the specific selected media.

So, the Title of my post should be: 'One way to decide when the waveform must be showed' PLEEEEEEEASE!

My hope now is that an expert can tell us a way to deactivate this default process in the current version. It's possible that exists an *.INI setup file or another resource in which this forced waveform visualization can be deactivated.

Please if anyone has this knowhow, express yourself!

It's not exposed in the UI but there is a registry flag that will disable waveform drawing: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio\8.0\Camtasia Studio\8.0\GenWaveform (no waveforms if that's set to zero.

Yesssss!!!! GOD heard my prayers! This tip is wonderful!

I knew there had to be a simple solution like this!

To avoid having to open the 'regedit' every time to make the switch between ON and OFF is possible to create 2 files with .reg extension to automate the task of modify registry.

Very many thanks Kevin Mojek. Not in vain I have waited three months for this answer!

Highlight the key and in the File menu, select Export. You can change the name of the .reg to indicate that it will turn the feature on or off. Then modify the setting, Export again, and name it the opposite.

You cannot export individual settings in the right pane of regedit. Clicking on Export will export the entirety of what you have in the left panel. Meaning that "installing" the .reg files you create will replace all of the setting in the right panel. If this is a problem, I would then open the .reg files in Notepad one at a time and edit out all the information that you do not want installing the .reg to change.

No no NOP! You did not understand the idea

Create in Notepad a single file called 'Waveform Off.reg' with this content:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio\8.0\Camtasia Studio\8.0]
"GenWaveform"=dword:00000000

and save it at desktop.

Then, create in Notepad a single file called 'Waveform ON.reg' with this content:

Windows Registry Editor Version 5.00

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\TechSmith\Camtasia Studio\8.0\Camtasia Studio\8.0]
"GenWaveform"=dword:00000001

and save it at desktop.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you want that Camtasia NOT DRAW the waveforms on opening the project, call the desktop file Waveform Off.reg and authorize the execution (previously to open Camtasia Studio)

This will only change the value of the registry key in question.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

When you want that Camtasia DRAW the waveforms on opening the project, call the desktop file Waveform ON.reg and authorize the execution (previously to open Camtasia Studio)

This will only change the value of the registry key in question and now the waveforms will be drown again.

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Using this method is no need to import or export any portion of the registry.
The programmed files with the reg extension alter only the word keys that matter to make the switch. Make a test! Works fine to me!

Kevin,  thank you, again.

Two ways of doing the same thing. Welcome to Windows.

This is an old thread, but it needs to be revived.  There needs to be an option for disabling of automatic waveform drawing.  Then there needs to be an option on the right-click context menu for drawing the waveform on demand.  This way we don't have to wait for camtasia to analyse all of the audio tracks, and can select which track we need the waveform drawn for.
