I have just installed Camtasia Studio 9 and cannot open projects created in Camtasia 6. It is asking to open the project in Camtasia 8 and Upgrade the project, then open in 9. I'm not sure what I need to do here since I do not have 8.

Download and install Camtasia 8 from this link.

You can use your Camtasia 9 key to activate it.
You can also leave Cam 6,8 and 9 all installed on the same computer at the same time.

I just encountered this same issue, and it surprised me. I have 52 videos in Camtasia 8 I need to re-render due to some updates on our project, and I am a little frustrated about the multiple-step process I will need to go through to upgrade each project--I foresee my update project will suddenly take quite a bit longer than I had anticipated. I have never used a product that required me to upgrade the item in the previous version and then open it a second time in the current version.

have you previously produced those projects to MP4?

if so, maybe start new projects from just the MP4s, add in any interactive stuff, etc.; the produce again

Yes they were all produced. Unfortunately we had a change of the name of the product so I need to put a new text block on the opening screen of all videos for branding purposes, vs. re-recording all of them that will come over time.  Thanks.

I'll add that your upgrading 52 projects from Camtasia Studio 8 to Camtasia 2018 should not be too big a burden

with Camtasia Studio 8, Camtasia 9, and Camtasia 2018 installed on your system ...

if zipped, import/open a 8 project in 9 to upgrade; then immediately exit that project; open it again in 2018 to upgrade [no need to re-zip in between]

as a best practice, if you need to keep legacy projects over time, whenever a new Camtasia version becomes available, do the upgrade to the new current version, then re-zip for keeping

try this ...

with the MP4 on timeline, just add new callout/text box on top of old one?

I've had to patch over hundreds of similar videos, just working from the MP4; the original projects were all lost due to external HD failure [so no choice]

a saved frame of the patch over area can make patching look like original

might be worth a try?
