Hi, I've installed and started the trial for Camtasia Studio. So far I'm loving the Recorder features.

Is there an option to purchase only the Camtasia Recorder? :)

Hi there

I'm curious as to what you would do if you did have the option to only have the recorder? Won't you still need to edit what you record?

Cheers... Rick :)

Hi Rick,

Good question :)

I simply want to do my editing on a different software ^_^

Since I already have an editing tool, it would be kinda redundant to also buy the Studio for its editing capabilities. (Although it does have great features!)

I saw an option in the recorder where it can output directly to an uncompressed avi. That would be enough for me to edit my simple captures.

You might find Snagit suited to your needs?
Or, even Jing. However, there is a 5 minute time limit with your Jing recordings.
And, these options only provide MP4.

With Camtasia recording, you get the editable metadata like markers, cursor data, keystroke shortcuts, etc. that you can work with in the Camtasia Editor. You can also choose to skip these editable features and record to AVI which burns everything into the video.

However, at this time, we do not sell the Recorder as a stand alone tool/program.

You cannot purchase the recorder separately.

However, depending on how much you intend on using the recorder you can get Camtasia on a monthly subscription basis from here. http://store.steampowered.com/app/253050/

This may be the best option for a couple of reasons. If you don't use the program every month you can save money.

The Biggest Reason??? Camtasia 9 is coming and we don't know exactly when.
If you purchased Camtasia 8 today. Upgrading to Camtasia 9 may cost you more in the long run than if you went with a subscription. This is subjective to when Camtasia 9 is actually released so it's a bit of a gamble either way you go.
There will probably be a grace period that will allow you to upgrade to Camtasia 9 for free if you recently purchased version 8. However, I haven't seen any literature covering a policy on this matter.

TechSmith should be able address the upgrade policy. I'm just a Camtasia user.

Camtasia 9 will be a 64 bit program and that is beneficial for recording as well as editing.

Hope this helps you make a decision.

Regards, Joe

Hi Joe,

Awesome! I wasn't aware that Steam sold a monthly subscription of Camtasia.
I believe that is the best option for me now.

Thanks a bunch!

if you're only looking for screen capture, a cheap alternative is, if you already have PowerPoint 2013, you can capture screens and export them as MP4s using the 'Screen Recording' button on the Insert tab
