Where do I find Custom Trim in Snagit 13?

I'm a long time user and huge fan of SnagIt. And while I don't use this particular feature on a daily basis, I do find it to be something I use quite a lot. And I recall it performed a disappearing act in SnagIt 10 and fortunately re-appeared in an update shortly after 10 was released.

The feature?

Custom Trim

I'm hoping it's safely tucked away in some arcane location I've not yet landed on.

Cheers... Rick :)

It's a bit hidden under the Edit > Resize Canvas item -- "Use relative dimensions" Let us know if it still does what you need.

Hmmm, well, thanks for the pointer. Took me a while to find it because in my own SnagIt 13 this was found under the Image menu. Unfortunately I'm a bit more than disappointed because the feature I used most often is now absent. I'm talking about the ability to use the spin controls to influence only the edge I need.

Cheers... Rick :)

Oops, yep I meant the Image menu.  It lets you trim width and height by entering a negative value for the Width/Height. And it is missing the spin controls. So it's similar but not quite the same.

I've discovered the same issue with the upgrade from 12 to 13. It was very simple in 12 to trim an image from any side to get to an exact size like 300x250. I could easily trim 3 pixels on the left and 5 pixels on the right to control the image.

I tried the IMAGE / RESIZE CANVAS process you mentioned and it's a nightmare to try to use. Negative numbers to trim and then you have to choose which little box to trim and then it seems to work opposite what i would expect. Click the box on the bottom to trim the top.

Can 13 be upgraded to work the way it did before? I used this all the time when sizing images for web content. Thx.

The same and in "Resize Image..." is missing "spin control"

It helps me more than working with the mouse, I think now use half the keys on the keyboard.
Where I started and where we are now.

I want to use more than the mouse, keyboard not all.
For me it was much easier to use version 12

Same here. I use this all the time to, the name said it, Custom Trim an image by a few pixels until just right. Spin controls were definitely a lot easier to use than typing an arbitrary about.

+1 from me too! This was one of my very favorite features and I had a quick access button to it. The other thing that was nice about it that is missing now is you could preview how much you were trimming before committing to it. It was quite unique to Snagit and worked better than any other software. Now it's changed to work like everything else. Please bring it back!

PLEASE BRING CUSTOM TRIM BACK TO SnagIt 13. Also, please make it available as a toolbar icon that I can add to the toolbar. Custom Trim in v. 12 was brilliant, easy to use and I used it on almost every single capture. In v. 13, editing my captures take forever.

Time to prioritize this. The custom trim feature was a simple, one-click option in 12 and with the time it takes to trim to exact sizes now, I am considering going back to 12.

This feature should definitely be added back. TechSmith might also think about seeing what customers want before making 'improvements' in future versions.  While Snagit 13 is visually more attractive than 12, that was more than offset by making it much harder to use, removing features, etc. I've returned to Snagit 12 and won't be purchasing any future upgrades.

Just like the original poster, I am a long-time user and advocate for SnagIt. I have used and loved it nearly every day since 2006.

Today I eagerly clicked through on the prompt to join the 2017 year-end voting process, hoping to find Custom Trim in the candidate set. Naturally I was pretty disappointed to see it missing from the list. I so desperately want this back!

If it helps, I find the suggested v13 alternative (Image > Resize Canvas...) to be insufficient specifically because:

  1. Often the right Custom Trim needs to take a little from all 4 edges, and rarely in a strictly "centered" Placement.
  2. The real-time preview (along with spinners) was perfect for dialing up just the right trim, and this preview is absent from Resize Canvas.
  3. The ability to recall and apply precisely the same Custom Trim on the next image was terrific. (I would most often do this on multiple images captured quickly with Repeat Last Capture hotkey).
  4. The presence of Custom Trim allowed me to be just a little sloppy (and certainly much faster) in grabbing my screen shot, without demanding incredible precision from my eyes and mouse.
Please bring back Custom Trim!

Techsmith... please bring custom trim back. I'm not going to upgrade without it. If it disappears all together, i'll have to write my own software.

Now I'm even more sad about this. Is there any other quick way to trim that I might be missing? Since I'm having trouble with the crosshairs freezing when doing a screen capture, I've resorted to setting it to always capture the whole screen, so now I have to trim every.single.capture.

So I've just traded one slow workflow for another.

In many other programs, I can hold the control key while dragging an handle and the opposite side will also crop at the same time. Is there any trick like that in Snagit so I don't have to crop each side?

I just downgraded from Snagit 2018 to Snagit v12 specifically to get "Custom Trim" back as a feature.
