Often times you don’t want to just highlight a rectangular area. You may want a custom area to highlight. This would allow you to select a custom area any any shape.

This reply was created from a merged topic originally titled Snagit Highlighter Shapes - Here's a Better Way.

The work around to create a custom shaped highlighted area has been less than desirable.
Use the shape tool and reduce the opacity.

Hopefully you will find this method much more to your liking.

Yes, please because this is a fundamental screen capture function.  Contrast with some of the requested improvements to the Editor that can already be done in PhotoShop or a less powerful similar software.  Sure Photoshop is nearly $50/month, but this program is called SNAGit not EDITit.

It would be great if we could also save the capture area and position on the screen across captures. Thanks!

While this would be very useful, this Idea didn’t get enough votes to be under consideration for a release in the next year or so. We are marking this one as Not Planned for the time being. There were a lot of other ideas At this point, there are a lot of other things things we’ll be focusing on first. Definitely bring this up again when we do our next round of voting if you still see a need!

Here are the definitions of what the statuses mean for Ideas.
Here is the overall vote count for the rest of the Ideas in this roundup, as well as what has been implemented since our previous round.
