Portable version of Snagit

Snagit Windows currently requires an install and, similarly, Snagit Mac uses user directories to store user preferences and captures. So they both require you to store information or the app on the computer you use it on. We’ve had requests to allow Snagit to be put on a USB drive or network directory. This would help those in order to use it on the road, across multiple computers, and for those with machines that are regularly wiped.

Now this is challenging for a couple reasons, if we are able to even do this, there may be some caveats for a standalone version if this garnered enough support. It may take some time to change our app around and we may lose some functionality if you choose to install it in this way (e.g., scrolling capture, capture metadata, and connectivity with our mobile apps won’t work as expected).

While this has had a long history and conversation, this Idea didn’t get enough votes to be under consideration for a release in the next year or so. We are marking this one as Not Planned for the time being.

We did some initial research on it and there were two classes of issues:
  1. Don't have permissions for scrolling capture in certain situations, getting metadata for captures, couldn't work with our mobile apps currently, and we might have issues with the way we log in to the app on Windows
  2. USB speed. It would create much longer capture times, especially for video, some larger images writing to usb 2.0 were taking close to 20 seconds. There are ways around this though by storing to the hard drive first and then copying everything over when exiting Snagit

At this point, there are a lot of other things things we’ll be focusing on first. Definitely bring this up again when we do our next round of voting if you still see a need!

Here are the definitions of what the statuses mean for Ideas.
Here is the overall vote count for the rest of the Ideas in this roundup, as well as what has been implemented since our previous round.
