Preview Snag files in Explorer or a Folders view in Snagit

(This idea is something we’ve heard from customers over time from several of our sources of feedback. We’re posting it here to gauge how well this fits our users’ needs. So please let us know what you think.)

Many users choose to use the file system to organize their captures instead of tagging in the library. This is a very valid way to work. Over time, users will end up with hundreds to thousands of Snag files in folders around their system. But they have no way of previewing which capture is which without first opening them in Snagit. The proposal here is to either create a way to preview files while using the filesystem. Or to bring back the folder view in the Library in Snagit, which allowed you to browse the file system and preview Snag files.

I'm interested which people would prefer.

I'd be happy if the File system could display a photo icon of a SNAG file similar to how Windows 10 does a JPG file.

I’m happy the report that we’ve brought the ability to preview files in Windows Explorer to Snagit 2019. Which released this morning. Just make sure you have your preview pane open or Medium sized icons, or larger, selected and you should see a thumbnail image of your Snag files.

While we didn’t have the time to commit to this when it was brought up in our first round of voting in this community’s round up, we were able to tackle this in conjunction with some other work.

Let us know how it’s working for you!

You can download the new version here: https://www.techsmith.com/download/snagit/

Chris,  on my other computer (a laptop) that has my OneDrive on it, I just installed 2019 and it DOES preview the files in DataStore that are in my OneDrive.  Now isn't that odd?  Now to figure out why my desktop PC's OneDrive won't preview the snag files in OneDrive.  (FWIW, both are running latest Win10 with updates).

OneDrive has a "Files On-Demand" feature which has an effect on whether the previews are shown or not.
If you turn this off, OneDrive will keep a copy on your local disk drive. You will then be able to see the thumbnails (Windows uses our .snag thumbnail "provider" in this case).
If this feature is on, OneDrive gets thumbnails for your files by another mechanism which does not use the .snag thumbnail "provider" that we added. I believe they are generated by the cloud service somehow. Here is what file types Microsoft says it supports for thumbnails: https://support.office.com/en-us/article/file-types-supported-for-previewing-files-in-onedrive-share...

Are you running on Windows 10?

You can see similar trouble reported in other Windows desktop products (Autodesk Inventor in this example) -- https://knowledge.autodesk.com/support/inventor-products/troubleshooting/caas/sfdcarticles/sfdcartic...

Thank you David.  I would have bet money that my desktop OneDrive was NOT set to "on demand", as I would not want it that way, but after checking it WAS set to "on demand"!  I have changed that, and am now waiting for OneDrive to sync everything from the cloud back down (where it should be!) and will test the preview, but I'm guessing it will work fine now.

Works fine. Over the years, I kept my sng files in Dropbox, so I didn't lose one of them. How to view them/import them in libraries?
