SnagIt Version 2019.1.6 (94046) does not work with Catalina. No matter what I do, it captures only a cleaned up desktop and nothing else. See image

Can you record it with Quicktime?

Catalina streams Apple Music, Apple TV, and Apple Podcasts.
I would think Apple is blocking you from capturing content that requires purchase.

No, found the solution meanwhile myself.
It was something completely different way more trivial thing - unfortunately the System Preferences windows was not brought to to level of all open windows and I didn't see it.
To make it clear: System Preferences was opened by SnagIt and showed an unchecked SnagIt 2019 checkbox. But SnagIts notice on that and System Preferences has been for sure lowest windows layer of 15 open programs and windows in stack.

Hi,

If you're seeing a blank desktop when capturing, this is the result of a new security feature in Catalina where apps need explicit permission to capture the screen. When you take a capture with Snagit, there should be a dialog that unfortunately gets hidden (we're working to improve that) that looks something like this:

If so, then click Open System Preferences, and if you don't see this, you can just manually open system prefs. Then navigate to Security & Privacy > Privacy > Screen Recording and make sure Snagit 2019 is checked.

We posted parallel in time ;) Please see my reply right above yours - didn't see the "Screen recording" information box, was hidden behind countless other windows and boxes.

I'm not sure why Apple doesn't force that dialog to the front like they do for the Webcam/Microphone permissions dialogs, but we'll see if there's anything we can fix on our end. So it sounds like everything is working for you now?

Yes I'm fine now. Always if I could troubleshoot an issue myself ;)
Thanks for your help and reply anyway.

Hi

How can I add an application into this "Security & Privacy" window for "Screen Recording". I'ts currently empty and SnagIt (2019) is installed on my MacBook (Catalina).

Hi Daniel,

If you try to take a capture with Snagit, it will get added to that list.

In my environment, it immediately shows an empty screen.

Yup, so that's what happens when an app doesn't have permission to capture your screen. But taking a capture should add Snagit to the list and then you can check the checkbox. Once you do that, captures should work like they did before.

In addition to the System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Screen Recording reference in the aforementioned article, be sure to enable SnagIt 2020, in:

o  System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Camera
o  System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Microphone
o  System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Full Disk Access and
o  SnagItHelper2020 found in System Preferences > Security & Privacy > Privacy > Accessibility

as well.

I am able to get permission for screen recording enabled, but as you can see, I cannot get permission for files and folders.

Hm, so desktop folder access is needed to import system grab captures. If you take a macOS capture, does that trigger Snagit to appear in the Files and Folders list?

Silas, I suggest to click on the padlock lower left corner and login with a user having admin rights. ;)

Roland - thanks.  I did that and got the same result. I should have taken a screenshot with the lock open.

I got it working on my Mac desktop, but or some reason my the screen capture does not work on my MacBook pro. The security and accessibility checks are good, Snagit is updated, I rebooted... now I don't know what to do!

We're looking into the issue, it's happening to a few people, but not everyone. We're not sure yet if it's a bug with Snagit or with macOS Catalina.

Two questions for you that may help us narrow down what might be causing this:

1. Did you install any of the Catalina betas?
2. Is your Snagit from the app store or our website?

I have the same issue after upgrading my MacBook Air to Catalina, when I try to take a capture of my active window (region) it goes back to my desktop to take a capture. I have a Snagit version for Mac OS 3.3.7 running. If you have a solution pls provide it through any form of update

Hi moheli5160,

Have you checked the screen recording settings in System Preferences? Note that snagit version 3 is no longer supported, but it should still work if those settings are enabled.

A few people, really? This happened on my Mac Pro AND my MacBook Pro, so that doesn't line-up for me. I did not install any Catalina betas nor did I use the app store.

Hi arquimedesgavino ,

What version of Snagit do you have? The system audio install was only fixed recently, in 2019.1.6
