Problem with TOC transitions when using multiple files

I run a very old version of Camtasia Studio because it offers an option that is not available in any of the newer versions. I use the table of contents (TOC) option with multiple files, one for each TOC entry. Using multiple files allows my clients to randomly click on any TOC link from my web site and instantly begin to playback the file pertaining to that particular link (with no delay). If I do not use multiple files and someone clicks one of the last links in the TOC, then they (my clients) must wait too long until the entire file loads to the point of the link selected. This is why I use the multiple file option. However!!! The problem with the multiple file option using current versions of Camtasia Studio is the transition between multiple files is very erratic (jerky) and there is a momentary flash (dark screen) between multiple files. This transition looks very unprofessional. This was not the case with the older Camtasia Studio version 5.1 that I am using. Can you tell me if there is a fix in process or if there is a workaround for this problem.

Thanks,
Dan

The capability you describe was available in CS7 [classic controller], but not so in CS8.

In CS8, you can produce to multi files, but a query URL will not work to hit a specific TOC item's clip.

I heard that it will work if hosted on screencast.com, using a time hack query [there was a post on this forum by a TechSmith employee explaining this].

Regarding the black you see in between clips, have you tried changing the video background color using the Editing Dimensions dialog [in CS8]?

I've made many SmartPlayer multi files productions; the transitions between clips always seemed pretty smooth to me.

But I wish the old query URLs worked again; I tried the time hack query URL with videos hosted on my web site; no luck.

Do you know if this problem in fixed in the upgrade to CS 8.1?

I'm having this problem too.

I've tried every version up to 8 and finally gave up on Techsmith. I'm running the older versions because the capability for outstanding transitions when producing to multiple files is required for my web site. If anyone out there can comment on CS 8.1 using the transitions in this way (producing to multiple files), it would be appreciated

Here's a summary of correspondence with Mike at tech support (copied with permission). Importantly, TechSmith needs more feedback to prioritize a fix.
-----
Cause:
I did some digging and spoke to a few folks in development as well. What we found out is that the flash controller we use in Camtasia 8 is completely different than the one in your CS7 links. The newer controller uses a different way of buffering the video which at the beginning can take a tad longer depending on the Internet connection to buffer the videos. This is done to hopefully avoid any stopping and starting during the middle of the playback of the video. On my end with a faster connection the wait times were not as noticeable between CS7 and CS8 but the slower the connection the more difference there will be.

I’m afraid I don't have any other way around this in CS8.

CS8.1 uses the same controller as 8.0.

I have not seen any other reports of this behavior come through tech support. The behavior will be different for every user since they all have different varying speeds of Internet connection. Unless we get more reports of this being a problem I don't see any immediate changes.

Feel free to post this in the community. It would be a good way to find out how widespread the problem may be.

Please let me know if you have any questions.
Kind Regards,
Mike

workarounds ...

for multi files productions where a black frame is seen between files [TOC indexing to next video] ... add a video background color with the editing dimensions dialog; I always use a teal color as a background color for my video's HTML file; I set that same color as the video background color; when a multi files video plays, the transition then between TOC clips is hardly noticeable

for buffering with large single file productions ... put a 2 second frame extension at beginning of project; place a 2 second hotspot at t=0, set to stop at end, click to continue, the hotspot I use is a image of a start button; do custom production and set player not to pause at start; when video loads and auto starts play, it will pause at 2 seconds at the end of the frame extension/hotspot, this looks like a normal start as if paused; the video file continues to download; when a viewer clicks what looks like the normal start button, video play continues; because more video has downloaded, buffering can be virtually eliminated [viewer can see download status and rate, and decide when to start viewing]

Thanks for the creative workarounds.

A non-black screen for the 3-8 second delay I've experienced between TOC multi-files may help viewers know the video didn't crash. However, this is still quite a delay for my students and this can get frustrating.

The frame extension and hotspot is a very creative workaround. However, it may get cumbersome (for me and my students) for every TOC multi-file marker. For example, a 10 min video with 4 TOC markers may mean adding this workaround 5 times (at the beginning plus at each marker).

The better solution is for TechSmith to improve the flash controller in the next upgrade!

In general, TechSmith is great, but they don't include sufficient QA testing for TOC multi-file features prior to release. In deed, there was a bug for TOC multi-files in CS6 that they had to fix with a special file download. There was another bug in CS7 TOC multi-files as well. I'd be glad to volunteer to test if given the opportunity.

the hotspot trick is intended for large SINGLE file productions

a 3 to 8 sec delay with the multi files is a large delay; are the marker segments long?

I try to keep my multi file segments [TOC items] to 2 minutes or less each; that seems to give me great performance

here is an example of one of my multi files productions; this one is actually 3 productions daisy chained together because there are 350 TOC items

the last TOC item in the 1st 2 auto link to the next video in sequence

I should add that there seems to be a bug with multi files productions; if there are a lot of TOC items, and the video format is large, a browser flash crash will occur after so many TOC items have been viewed continuously; for me, in this example, the crashes occur after about 20 TOC items; recovery nis by a refresh and then direct TOC navigation to the appropriate last item viewed; I see this issue in Chrome and IE
