Prolems with Playhead Jumping to Beginning and Clips Jumping to New Track in Camtasia 3

Hi! First let me say that overall, I really enjoy Camtasia 3. However, I seem to have a problem when I click and hold the playhead, it jumps to the beginning making it difficult to position exactly where I want it. Additionally if I click and hold a clip, the clip tends to jump to another track.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is Techsmith working on a fix?

Thanks,

Joey

I've found playhead-jumping issues in general... I wasn't sure if I should piggyback on here or create a new topic.

I've been using Camtasia 3 on Mac and love all of the new changes, interface, everything.  The one problem is the playhead issue.  Generally when I use any video editor, I click in the timeline to move the playhead where I want to start and press the spacebar to begin playing.  Frequently though, when I press the spacebar to play, the playhead jumps from where I manually positioned it to elsewhere earlier in the timeline and begins playing.  It could be user error, but I never ran into this issue with Camtasia 2 for Mac, Camtasia 8 for PC, or any other video editing software like FCPX.

I have seen this unexpected cursor behavior. Twice I've tried to reproduce it to document it as a bug, but failed. Could it have to do with our fingers dangling on the trackpad? Just a thought.

I wondered about that, but I use Kensington Trackball, So I don't suspect it to be fingers dangling on it. However, it does seem to happen when you hold the Left-Click for more than a moment.

Yeah, at some point I'm going to do a screen grab of it so I can show Techsmith what is happening. What I don't know is, if it's confined to just the Mac version or if it's happening with both the Mac and Windows versions. It'll be interesting to find out.

I've never seen this, that's certainly not supposed to happen! Could you indeed post a video of it happening so we could try to get a better idea how to reproduce it or what might be causing it?

Hi Paul. Thanks for responding. Yes, I was able to duplicate the problem and create a 15 second clip of the issue of the jumping play-head. The good news is that it does not appear to affect the Windows version of Camtasia. Would you like me to post the video here, or send it to you another way? Thanks

Hi Joey!

If possible, posting a link to the video hosted on something like Youtube or Screencast.com would help (plus it helps others that might search for similar issues). If you don't have access to and account like that, perhaps you could open a support ticket so we can look into the issue?

As for the issue itself, what type of content do you have in your project (TREC files, imported 3rd party media files, etc.)? Also, are you storing your files locally on the Mac HDD, or are they in a network share, external/flash drive, or possibly stored in a synced folder (such as DropBox, OneDrive, or other backup software monitored directory)?

Hi Robert. The clip I created comes from a video I created with Camtasia 3. It does contain some PII data which I why I am reluctant to put it on the open web.

The media contained in the original project contains audio files (.mp3), still images, and an .MP4 video clip. The project was done on an iMac 32GB of RAM, Intel I7 Core processor @ 3.5GHz, it is a late 2013 Model. All files are on the main internal drive. However, the mouse, a Kensington Slimblade Trackball is connected via a USB 3.0 powered hub from Anker. I first suspected this might be the problem, due to interrupts but as noted earlier, I was not able to replicate the issue on the Windows version of Camtasia via Parallels.

Both of my copies of Camtasia (Windows and Mac) are upgrades. I am wondering perhaps if it could be due to a glitch in the upgrade process, or if Camtasia 3 was actually a clean install, even though it's an upgrade.

I hope this helps. Please advise on the video clip. I can even send a copy of the original files if needed.

Thanks for looking into this.

Hi Joey;

Thanks for the detailed response! Out of curiosity, if you take a test recording of your screen (so no private information is available), then save a test project to the same folder / directory as your problematic project, are you able to duplicate the issue with the test file?

I looked again at the clip, I think it'll be okay. :) I am attaching
the link now.

Hi Joey;

This is certainly not the intended behavior; do you have the same issue with other projects, or is it specifically with this project?

I have not tried older projects, as they were created using Camtasia 2. However, I will soon be working on a project in a few days. I can let you know what I find.

On the other Hand, I could create a pseudo-project and see if it happens again. Give me a few and I'll though some still images together and place them in Camtasia to see if the problem happens again. Will that be sufficient?

Hi Joey!

It will be yes; essentially I'm hoping to (in a limited capacity here in the public forums) narrow down if it is an issue related to all instances of Camtasia, or just a particular project. Hopefully this rudimentary test will help guide us in the right direction.

Thanks!

Hi Joey;

Are you experiencing the same issue? If so I would actually like to have you open a support ticket so we can grab some diagnostic files and begin looking into this behavior on your Mac.

Here are the results of the second test. The parameters were random static images, no audio.

Joey's video shows what I've experienced, but I cannot reproduce the behavior on-demand like he did. My playhead occasionally jumps to the start of the timeline, just as shown in the video.

Any progress on this issue. It's so bad from me I almost can't get any work done.

I am having the same problem.  I find the exact spot where I want to edit the clip and then when I hover and grab the end of the clip the playhead moves to the start of the clip.   This is a bad situation!!  Get it fixed.

I am having the same problem. I created a screen recording using Camtasia 3 on MacBook Pro (2015). The cursor most often jumped when I was selecting a range to clip or edit (using the red and green markers). There was nothing special added to this recording. It was very simple - not even annotations - just screen video and microphone audio.
