Provide option to not darken the background when showing a quiz in a camtasia video

when the quiz appears in Camtasia, the background video is darkened and the quiz appears over the video with only the question and answer choices highlighted over the video window. See attached image quiz1.jpg.

We want to be able to provide a quiz that uses the imagery in the video. In this simple example, we have a video showing images of a variety of animals. We want to test the student's knowledge by showing an image and asking which animal is shown. In the example, the top portion of the video window is an image of a monkey, and below is a true/false question asking if the image shows a monkey. The question appears below the image, but the image is darkened, which makes it difficult to view.

This is a simple example, but applies to many subjects. The method of teaching is to show examples of items and provide details about them as the video progresses.  At different times in the training, a question appears with an image. The student should be able to identify the image and answer the question pertaining to it.

It could be identifying an artwork, an instrument, a president,  etc.  But if the image is darkened, it is too difficult to discern details of the image.

So, provide an option for the video settings to keep the background at normal viewing, instead of darkened. We created a test video with a quiz in the timeline in the middle of showing an image for the question in the timeline, as you can see from this timeline segment.

After the first quiz, the video timeline shows the tiger image and asks the next question:

The question appears with the image as we want, but it is darkened, which we don't want.

This is a good idea and I gave it a vote (which honestly is useless) and I wouldn't expect anything to change.

There is a way you can change the overlay and get the look you want.

You would have to do it each time after you produce your video but it only takes a couple of seconds to do.

You can make the change to the overlay happen WHEN you do your production but it would require you
block Techsmith from auto changing the smart-player files that they do behind the scene and with no notice. Just another great thing they do that screws up production time for so many reasons.

Anyways you can edit the smart-player CSS file to change the overlay and keep the image visible.

After you produce your video go in to the production folder and open the skins folder.
Then open the Remix folder where you will find the smart-player CSS file.

MAKE A BACKUP COPY OF THE CSS FILE just in case you mess up .

Open the CSS file in a text editor and do a search for tsc_overlay.

This is the line of code you need to find which should be the first instances you land on.

In that line of code select the color code for the "background color" and back space to remove it.

Save it.

The overlay should now not cover your image.

great tip, Dubie

thanks for sharing

I'll note that it won't help with videos hosted on screencast.com since we have no control over that player

Thanks for adding that info Kayakman.

I was going to mention that in my post and completely forgot.

I believe that, over time, you're offered a number of excellent tips about tweaking the SmartPlayer

ever consider documenting them together in a video tutorial?

Dubie!!  Thanks for the help. I tweaked the CSS and now the background looks clear and clean.

Now we can actually use Camtasia to create videos and quizzes for our students.  Our teachers thank you... not sure our students will though :P

Thanks a lot!
