RE: Rip/Import DVD (help?)

Hi folks,

This question is related to my existing thread concerning composing a soundtrack:

https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/newbie-copyright-video-material-help

I purchased a genuine copy of the Zombie movie I wish to re-write the soundtrack for.  I ended up using VLC software to RIP the DVD to my PC.  There were a couple of options on there for which FORMAT could be used so I chose two different ones(both MPEG_4 though).

But neither will play in CamTasia.  When I imported them into Cubase it says "Invalid File Not Supported".  But they play fine with 'Windows Media Player'?

I want to be able to IMPORT the video into Cubase so that I can compose the music in sync.  I was trying to see if I could CONVERT it into a different format in CamTasia, but as I say I can't even get it to play!

Please see screenshots below.

Many thanks in advance for any kind advice offered . . .

Paul David Seaman (UK)

Hi,

I had a look on the Steinberg Cubase forum at a few threads.

Here is an answer (below) from one of the members who was responding to this topic which may be of use. I have QuickTime Player and am about to run an UPDATE just to see if this helps. However, all other videos I have IMPORTED into Cubase play totally fine (and with Audio!).  So the issue clearly is with the Zombie film I have just ripped.

Ta very much . . .

Paul

MOV This is a QuickTime movie.
QT This is also a QuickTime movie, but it is only used on Windows systems.
MPEG-1 This is the first standard of the Moving Picture Experts Group for video and audio compression, used for making video CDs. Files of this container format can have the extensions “.mpg” or “.mpeg”.
MPEG-4 This format is based on the QuickTime movie standard, can contain various metadata for streaming, editing, local playback, and interchange of content. Its file extension is “.mp4”.

Above you see the supported video formats (MpG-2 isn't a part of it) and you will need quicktime 7.1 installed!

tip: CONVERT YOUR MATERIAL TO mp4!

The QuickTime player for Windows should be uninstalled immediately because it puts the security of your computer at risk. The US Government has warned everyone about this issue.

You can still install the codecs you need to import and produce videos using mov codecs but the player needs to go.I created a video a while back that shows you how to uninstall the player and install the codecs properly and why you need them.

Thanks Joe,

This filmscore project of mine seems to be going from bad to worse! lol

I will have a try out with your kind video instructions in the morning. I am just a bit concerned that the video player facility in Cubase will not work now because I am sure it is solely reliant on the QuickTime one?

Great tutorial thanks!

Best,

Paul

I've got a lot of software and so far the codecs is all I have needed. I don't know about Cubase but I suspect you will be alright. I'd like to here if it works for you.

Ok, cheers Joe.

Fingers crossed all will be well. But if there is an issue with Cubase, I can Skype Steinberg in Germany next week to inform them of the situation.

Hi again,

Ok, I tried following Joe's kind instructions as demonstrated in his excellent video but as I suspected, Cubase is reliant on the QT player.

Here is a LINK to the Steinberg forum where I left a very stern reply!  I am already on a final warning so will probably be issued a permanent ban now!

https://www.steinberg.net/forums/viewtopic.php?f=198&t=96043&p=549447#p549447

And to Steinberg's official statement (for what it's worth!):

Hey Paul,

Here’s what I recommend. Go to Windowsdeals.com  http://www.windowsdeal.com/w/winx-dvd-ripper-platinum-discount-coupon-code/

download WIN X DVD Ripper Platinum for free. I used an older version of the program a while back and it worked great.

Since then I’ve installed Windows 10 on my computer and I lost the program in the process. My free activation code expired quite some time ago so I could not reinstall it.

I went to the website today and they just happen to be offering the program for free as of right now. They only offer it for free for a short period of time. You cannot install any updates or anything like that but you won't need to. The program will run as is.

You will need to join Windowsdeals in order to get the program for free. I forget exactly how you join but I believe as soon as you click on the download link and try to place the order it will give you the opportunity to join. I’ve been a member of Windowsdeals for quite some time. What’s important is that it’s free to join and you don’t get any malware or any garbage like that when you download programs through them.

I downloaded the newest free version today and have installed it on my computer. The activation code they gave me worked just fine and I now have the program back.

The YouTube video below will give you a good idea on how you use program. If it were me I would save the DVD to a the AVI format and use that for your video editing needs.

Regards, Joe

. . . . I still have a ZIPPED FILE I am not sure what to do with?  The INSTALLER ran fine but I can't seem to get anything put of this.  Unless the INSTALLER automatically extracts everything etc within it's process?

The zip file contains the activation code. You can right click it and choose open with Windows explorer if you don't have Win Zip .
I just got in from cutting a few acres of grass.Glad you got the program.

Correct!
Ha, I can't quite read a couple of the numbers towards the beginning  but I can see well enough to know you have the identical activation code as mine.I had a feeling that they give everyone the same key.

Hi Joe,

I just scribbled over the code in case it was a unique one.

It is offering me an upgrade to something with 75% discount. Not sure what it is so I will upload a screenshot tomorrow.

You received an older version of the program, that's why it was free. But as long as it rips your DVD there is no reason to upgrade.
That's the whole point of the free giveaway.Their hoping you purchase the upgrade.

Hi Joe,

But if it is cheap and a one of lifetime payment, would it be worth doing?

I wonder if the upgrade would enable you to install on more than one device?

Only if you plan on ripping a lot of newly remastered low resolution DVD's. If the disk isn't brand new the encryption is probably old school and can be ripped with the version you have.

If you upgraded to the newer version it would have the latest decryption technology. DVD's are encrypted to prevent you from ripping them. That's why you need a program to copy them.

If I were ripping movies from a brand new disk they would probably be  Blu-Ray movies.
Win X is for ripping older low resolution movies and won't rip Blu-Ray disks at all.

There are better programs for ripping DVD's and Blu-Ray's.  This is one of the best programs available and it does regular DVD's, 3-D, ISO files and more.
It's not that expensive either.   http://www.acrok.com/video-converter-ultimate/

Hi Joe,

There are to be two circa 1980 zombie films and the 1983 film 'The Shining'. The quality of the former is far lesser than the Kubrick film.

All three films are to be ripped from boxed original purchased DVD.

Blu_Ray format is not something I will be using.

Paul

Hi,

This may be superfluous now due to the QuickTime Player issue as previously discussed, but here is a link to which video files Cubase supports etc:

Thanks,
