Remote Usability Testing: Morae and TeamViewer

I'd like to share my thanks to Morae for a great remote usability testing tool.

Recently, at office, I and my colleague were able to conduct a pilot remote usability study using TeamViewer and Morae. 

This pilot was for a prototype hosted on a common server and the moderator shares his/her screen with a link to the prototype (intranet portal) in the task activities.

Sharing the steps below. 
  1. Install Morae Recorder and TeamViewer Client on Moderator's machine (with webcam). You can download TeamViewer from http://download.teamviewer.com/download/TeamViewer_Setup_en.exe

  2. Moderator: After installation, click on Meeting instead of Remote Control displayed on the top. On Moderator's machine, open TeamViewer Client, and click Instant Meeting. TeamViewer Panel opens and a unique meeting ID starting with the mxx-xxx-xxx (x is a numeral) format will be displayed. 

  3. User: Install TeamViewer Client on User's machine (with webcam) and ask the user to enter the meeting ID. Then, user sees the TeamViewer Panel.

  4. User: Ask User to share his/her webcam video through their TeamViewer Panel.

  5. Moderator: Ask Moderator to share only his/her screen. 
    Note: Moderator will not share his/her webcam video. Drag the user's webcam video from the TeamViewer panel of the moderator and keep it separately in the lower-right of the moderator's screen.

  6. On both the machines, minimize the TeamViewer panel.

  7. Moderator: On Moderator's machine, open Morae Recorder, share the screen and start recording. As TeamViewer is running in the background, the moderator gets to see the user's on-screen interactions and the user's webcam video.

Hello Arun,

thanks for your tip.
How are you recoding the Users voice in this setup? Did Morae capture it along the webcam video of the user?

If I recreate this setup then I can only record the voice of the moderator. Which obviously isn't even half of the interesting part ;)

Next time, you may use on premise R-HUB remote support servers for remote usability testing. It works on Windows, MAC, Android, iOS etc.
