I would like the ability to rename tags or delete the tag permanently. I use an app called Pocket. If you mouse over the Tag, you get a progressive menu that shows a pencil. Once you click on the pencil icon (to the left) you can edit and rename the tag or delete it.

The way to delete or modify a tag is to go to the tags folder in the Library file listings. There you will see all the files that have been tagged. Once you have chosen all the files with a particular tag then you can delete that tag or change it. It's also possible to change the tag just for one file or whatever number of files you choose.
It's perhaps not as elegant a method as you described but it basically does the same thing and does avoid the mistake of globally changing a tag that perhaps you forgot for a capture you didn't want to change. A bit more work but greater flexibility versus that global method.

My goal is not remove the tag from the image, but to permanently delete the Tag. I no longer need the tag and I do not want to scroll past 100 + tags to get to the tag I need. SnagIt needs a way for me to maintain a tag list, other programs like Pocket offer feature.

I'm sorry I wasn't clear but modification or deletion is basically the same thing. In the library tags folder select the tag you want to delete then choose all the captures that have that tag. Unselect that tag and since no captures have that tag then it will be gone. There's no simpler method available at the moment. It's this or nothing.

If I had read your response more carefully I would have understood what you were saying. To be honest I don't use tags in SnagIt and that's probably why I didn't pick up on what you had eluded to. Oh well, there's no better way to learn how to do something than the hard way. That is if you want to remember how to do it later.
I'm leaving my response up though because I feel like I earned it. Thanks for the clarification Manny!

Rckline007,
It took me a while to work this out but you can delete a tag completely.
Go into the library and open the tags menu.
Click on the tag you want to remove and all the Images associated with that tag will appear on the right.
Select all the Images. "Or one if that's all there is"
Click on the Tag Icon at the top and "Uncheck that Tag".
The tag will be deleted.
See Image Below, Click to Enlarge.

I'm not seeing this procedure works in the current version of 13.1.2. Is there not a way to remove a tag definition entirely, and not just unassign it from an image?

You need to highlight the tagged image first and the click the Tag Icon at the bottom of the editor.See Image.

Then you will get a pop up window. Right click the tag's title and then delete it.

This procedure only untags the image, not deletes the tag definition. I'm looking to remove the tag definition entirely so that when I go to tag more images, a specific tag doesn't even show in the list any more. Even with no images using this tag, it still shows.

It removes the old tag from the list for me.
I created a new tag show to it worked.
I don't use tags. I only created these tags as a test.

If a tag is not assigned to at least one image, it won't show under the "Tags" label in the screenshot you posted. But still it shows in the available tags to assign. I'm trying to remove it as a possibility to assign, but it appears there's no way to do so.

Ok, what I found is if one closes SnagIt (not just the editor) and re-opens the program and a tag has been created but not assigned, it will be removed from the tags definitions that appear. Only tags that have been assigned at least once will persist after a cycling of the program.

Doesn't work for me. It's still showing the old undesired tags available to assign.

1) A solution would be to have the ability to sort the list of TAGS on the left pane.
3) Deleting a Tag would be good
4) Nesting of Tags
5) With nesting, being able to move a TAG.
Perhaps have the last 5 (configurable). used TAGs along the bottom bar.
- Name (A-Z, Z-A)
- Recently added TAGS
- Most recently used TAGS
- By the number of images with a TAG

No progress. I haven't seen any valid replies. Folks seem to be misunderstanding the issue that the unwanted tag needs to be removed from the drop down of possible choices rather than from all the images. I'm going to ask TechSmith directly. I'll let you know if they reply.

I called TechSmith on this and they thought it was a very interesting problem. They acknowledged the issue and said they would get back to me. I never heard back. I love Snagit but I'm disappointed on this one.

I was able to do it in SnagIt v2019.3 for Windows. Here's how:
Hope this helps!
- Choose a picture tagged with the tag you want to delete
- Click on the Tag button on the bottom-left, you'll get a list of all of your tags and the tag in question will already be in the add tag text box at the top
- Right-click on the existing tag and choose Delete tag:
- Go through all of your pictures (via the Library) and remove the tag from all of the pictures that are tagged with it.
- Once all pictures with this tag have had the tag deleted from them (i.e. all pictures have been untagged), then the tag will disappear from list of tags.
- Restart SnagIt to completely remove all deleted tag references:
- Go to the Notifications area next to the clock
- Find the Red TechSmith SnagIt icon
- Right-click & choose Exit TechSmith SnagIt
- Go to Start menu, search for SnagIt
- Click the icon to restart the program
Hope this helps!
