Report SPAM Posts Here

If you see any spam at feedback.techsmith.com paste a link to it here so we can review and remove.

The software powering this support site has anti-spam mechanisms and TechSmith staff also will delete spam, however we do miss things occasionally. Because there is no report spam functionality within this service, we've successfully used posts like this one where the community can paste links to report spam.

When the length of this thread starts to become unruly a new post like this will be created.

To Techsmith,

See my post here
https://feedback.techsmith.com/techsmith/topics/invoke-can-spam-act-of-2003

I think it would be a big spam slasher if you implemented it as the other community did.

Dubie:)

This morning I saw a new and clever way to insinuate spam onto this forum.

The spammers' issue is how to make their post appear genuine.  This spammer has solved that by going to an existing thread, copying a response from a genuine user and adding their spam link to it.

It would've gone unnoticed was it not for the language of the link.

Wise up TechSmith and start moderating new users instead of posts. How many times do we have to ask?

Actually that one's not that new, though I haven't seen it used on the Techsmith site for a while now. I do remember reporting at least a couple of them in the past. It's pretty ham fisted because the copy quite often grabs something out of context, which in turn makes the post look weird. (In this case the truncated first letter serves that purpose.) That draws unwanted attention to the post, which is why not a lot of spammers do it these days.

But I do agree about the user moderation, of course.

I've seen that technique quite a bit actually. I was reading a long post I wrote, that didn't match problem at hand.

I'm thinking that was about 3 years ago.
We were requesting moderators back then and previous to that.

What's changed over all these years? Aside from changing a few strategies from TechSmith and the Spammers? Nothing!

I know I'm stating the obvious but have to highlight it that every time someone advised about spam you are effectively have become a spammer.
I'm sick of these messages and am "unwatching" this page.
Techsmith really needs to pull their finger out and resolve this.
Not professional at all.

I think this comes under the heading of "failed spam".

Who?
Kittichai Swang

Where?
At least 25 different threads including this one, where he / she / it just takes a part of a line from an earlier post in the thread and has reposted it. I wouldn't mind betting that it's some kind of badly programmed bot that was supposed to post a spam link as well but was so ineptly designed that it failed to. Either way it's as anoying as... insert the word of your choice here.

OK, so based on the likes on my posts and the quotation of one of my earlier posts below, I stand corrected about it being a bot rather than someone who is just extracting the urine. Either way...

I think it's an attempt to get around user moderation.  Build a rep with innocuous likes/replies to several messages and then hit with the real spam later

I tend to agree except, why so much effort?
Can someone copy and paste lines from others posts using bots now? The whole thing doesn't add up to me. Unless we  get hammered by 100's of spam all at once from this technique. I don't see whats to be gained by this technique? In terms of value to the spammer and time invested. Unless this is a different form of bot?

The Spam you reported could be easily seen by TechSmith and removed.

Here we are, 6 hours after you reported it. And it's still there.

I'm glad you can amuse yourself over Spam. I expect you don't mind wasting your time reporting it . But you did.

The fact that SnagIt's Strategy Lead came on to clean up spammers raises questions about the willingness and/or ability of TechSmith to allocate efforts to counter spam posted on these boards.

A good contributing member named Paul just quit the forum over Spam.

Theres a GetSatisfaction forum for Adobes Photoshop related software. It was created for feedback and not support.
Adobe has a different platform for that. But people post help questions there anyway.https://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family

Paul said he never gets Spam from them. I never heard of them before, I use the other forum.
I joined and asked them about Spam. They said it's not really an issue and they remove it if they get any quickly.
Well that was a week ago and I haven't seen any Spam from them.

So TechSmith simply isn't willing to go far enough to control it. The other forum is a testament to that.

I mean, to be fair, we are comparing a Silicon Valley, publically traded company with thousands of employees with a private company.

I'm not sure to what extent this is skill vs. will.

Sorry, I can't agree with your analogy.

It only requires 1 person with a internet connected phone, who's paying attention and receives e-mail alerts from the forums.

All TechSmith forums combined. Over the weekend............. Received 32  "New Postings"

14 of those posts were generated from the Spam Alert post updates. Being sent to every forum.
7 forums had no other activity.

Obviously, there were replies to those posts. Which I didn't count.

Summer is a slow time for this forum, as are most weekends.

It required over 6 hours to have "Reported Spam" that occurred in the "Middle of the Day" removed.

User Muhammad Rizwan with a nonsensical reply but oddly no link. Also odd is that his profile shows that he has replied to two conversations since joining on Sept 7, but only one is listed in his profile?
