Ripple delete on multiple clips not working as expected

If I select multiple (adjacent) clips and use Ripple Delete, the subsequent clips only move left the length of one clip, the clip nearest the subsequent clips.
Shame I can't upload a video directly here which shows this.

It appears to be a bug. Would be interesting to hear if anyone else could reproduce this.

what happens if you use ctrl-X to execute the cut?

also, you have to make a timeline selection for it to work

just selecting the clips will just delete those clips, and not move the othners

Ctrl+x cuts both clips but doesn't move the subsequent clips at all, unlike ripple delete which at least tried moving the subsequent clips, albeit only th elength of one clip.

With Camtasia,

I do 99% of my ripple deleting using the expandable green and red sliders.
I've never noticed this behaviour as a result.

I just duplicated the behaviour in Camtasia 2019, 2018 and Camtasia 9.
Apparently, it must be as designed.
Or its a bug that has been under-reported or not corrected for years.

Irregardless,  its undesirable behaviour in my book.

Thanks, I tried that and it works as expected. I wasn't aware of being able to use the timeline selection in this way!

However, in my opinion, since ripple delete works on a single clip without timeline selection, I would have expected it to work with multiple clips. Without your help, I certainly would never have figure out how to perform this task.

Although the timeline selection technique works, I don't find it as intuitive and it certainly takes more steps/keyboard-aerobatics to use. So I would like to see this tool work in the way I (and some others I see) would have expected it to, if possible.

An update:
I've just tried again using timeline selection as suggested, but with multiple tracks. For example, I may have several tracks with narration, callouts, etc., and I wish to ripple delete clips no longer needed.

However, using timeline selection, this ripple deletes clips on ALL tracks, whether selected or not.
Obviously, this is not what was required so I still think the function itself could use an update.

lock tracks you don't want included in the ripple delete

Could do. At this point, it might be easier to just delete the unwanted clips and move the subsequent clips manually. My last project had 11 tracks that would have needed protecting and these workarounds would have been more hassle by now.

Just hoping TechSmith can fix this behaviour in a future update.

another trick

if you have a lot of tracks, and only want to effect 1 track ...

lock or disable that track
use ctrl-A to select everything else
then ctrl-G to group all selected tracks
lock/disable that grouped tracks track
edit your target track

then you can then ungroup the grouped tracks [I believe vertical track stacking is not preserved, so you may have to do some rearranging]

Hey MV,
This odd behaviour bothered me so much. I contacted tech support .That was yesterday.
At the end of business today, they sent me an e-mail.

It is now officially logged as a bug.
So it should be addressed/fixed at some point. When is hard to say.
I'll update this post if I hear anything.

Regards,Joe

Wow! Thanks Joe, that's impressive.
Hopefully it gets fixed sooner rather than later.

Although I've been using Camtasia and SnagIt for years, I've not really used the forums before, great community here.

Best wishes.
Michael
