Running SnagIt from a USB Drive

It would be really convenient to be able to install SnagIt on a USB "thumb drive" and be able to run it from this device. Several of us use SnagIt everyday at my company. This would allow us to create screen captures and use the capabilities of SnagIt without having to install it on the computer being "captured", only to have to uninstall it later. One example I've seen in an unrelated product is what Passmark Software does ... if you install their software locally, there is a "Install to USB Drive" option in the file menu. This is very handy, and such a feature would be a great aid in ease of use of your product.

Directory Opus has also such kind of feature. Under 'Tools->Backup' they installed version, with all settings (optionally), can be 'exported' to USB, where there is just one executable in the root and the rest is residing in a subfolder. It would be great if SnagIt offered something similar, i.e. that it can be launched just by doubleclicking the .exe (without having U3 software installed). That said, assume this is on the wishlist already for a lllong time.. Hope one day it will be introduced.

Fast Stone, a tool similar to Snagit, also has the option to install a portable version that you can run from a USB drive or even from a CD

Yes. In case I need a portable (video) capture I use that one. It misses the nice editor though, that SnagIt offers. Also I know there are non-official portable builts of SnagIt around, but I just want it from the Techsmith. Am afraid, this longlasting request did not move up on the developers priority list though. If... at all it is on whatever list .. :-)

I completely agree that there should be an option to make SnagIt install as a portable application.

It could even be a striped down version of the full product as long as one can configure which keys to use for which profiles and the ability to open the editor after capture.

More and more IT departments are locking down the possibility to install software - but very often there are not any provisions for denying to run stand alone .exe files.

It is just a time before SnagIt will see decline in new sales and upgrades due to such policies. There is at least one competing screen capture product that lets the user install a portable version of itself. The price is a tad lower then SnagIt (and the functionality also) - but if this is what can be used, then the customers money will go to that suppliers instead of TechSmith.

I have been a long time (since pre year 2000) customer of TechSmith and owns both their PC and Macintosh products.

If I purchase Snagit, can I download it to a flash drive and use it from the flash drive on different computers?

Is it now possible to down load Snag-It to a thumb drive yet? I travel between two training centers to develop content. I put the work in progress on a thumb drive. Any ideas yet.

-portable_snagit_exe
-Install on and run Snagit from a USB key with micro-sd card?

It has been a request for years. Already since they were still using the old forums format.

Forget it ..
FastStone Capture may be your solution. I use it regularly. Also, when recording, it does not show the toolbar, like with SnagIt.

Jason Eagleston (Snagit Lead Developer ) once wrote: "Unfortunately, there isn't an option for making Snagit "portable" such that it can be started directly from USB key."

So that's it then. Sorry. No comments since then.

I love snag it BUT working in a govt department where the you cant update snagit or re install Snagit is frustrating.
Having the option to run from  a USB would solve the problem.

I have SnagIT installed on my Windows 7  machine and copied "TechSmith" folder from C:\Program Files (x86)\TechSmith to your USB drive.  On the USB drive from TechSmith folder run snagIT.exe.

It works from 95% of the time from USB. Hope this helps.

Any hints on how to install SnagIt to a different drive?  I have a SSD drive and SnagIt continues to install directly to the SSD without offering me a choice to install to my normal drive area.

I second that motion! I have the same situation as the majority - and am sure we're not the only ones... I use numerous productivity tools for e.g. virtual desktops, clipboard managing, mouse/keyboard/screen controlling et al... SnagIt is the only one that's not portable, yet :)

As you can see, a portable version was/is on the wishlist for a lllong time. At least since 2012.

It has been asked for numerous times ever since. It is good to keep this request 'alive' though... :-)

Regretfully however, aside of Techsmith's " .. I can see how it could be really helpful. "
nothing happened.
There is even no explanation as to what is holding them back.
