I want to save an screenshot on my desktop with the push of one key.
I have snagit 12.2.2

SNAGIT UPGRADES ARE BEYOND TERRIBLE

I had earlier versions of snagit in which I could do this, but consistently, with each new version of snagit, I have to relearn **everything**. It is beyond frustrating.  I go months without the same features because every single time snagit upgrades, I cannot figure out how to do something I took for granted before.

EVERYTHING changes with every new upgrade - the icon, the user interface - every single thing.  It is beyond frustrating.

HOW many people do NOT pay to upgrade snagit because it is so radically different from version to version?

Snagit can learn a lot from Microsoft Office - they make changes but they are gradual - not radical like Snagit

In another thread, one of the reps promised that they would start start taking customer workflow more seriously and when pinned for a time frame they indicated that things could be expected on a (roughly) quarterly basis

Um ... You COULD save screenshots to the desktop and  in later versions you CAN'T. Did you not say that? Is it safe to assume that the loss of that ability has affected your workflow? Even if you want to criticize that, all I was trying to tell you is that they addressed that in another thread and I believe people are upset with the many changes as they affect their "workflow"
Sorry you did not find that helpful

The only reason I use snagit over the windows snipping tool or print screen, is the feature that scrolls down and grabs the whole page.  This is on previous versions so I don't bother to upgrade as I'm not interested in any of the new whistles and bells.

It sounds like what you are looking for are the Capture (share) Properties, which should be found in the SnagIt (Capture tool), not SnagIt Editor.

I am on SnagIt 11, so cannot provide exact instructions for your version. However, most companies (even Microsoft) don't completely remove functionality. They just make it harder to find because they changed the interface. However, naming conventions are usually the same.

So if you can find a Capture section and go to the Share Properties, then under image file you should be able to define the type of filename to be used; the folder the file should be saved to; and the file format the image should be saved in.
