Scorm compatibility

Camtasia is only compatible Scorm 2004 2nd edition - not usable for SAP Success factor!! we bought it for nothing. We are part of a 37.000 person group and it's not usable with our LMS with last Scorm standard 2004 4th edition. Because of that we have an error poping up that blocks course completion. We don't have any traceability without this last version of scorm and bought 2019 licence and maintenance for nothing... When will you update to last version? By the meantime we have to abandon its use...

Hello,

I'm sorry Camtasia does not currently have additional SCORM options.  I believe I have a quick fix you can do to update our SCORM 2004 2nd edition productions to SCORM 2004 4th edition.

  1. Create a local SCORM 2004 production
  2. Navigate to the folder output.  If you picked create zip file, then extract it so you can view the files.
  3. Locate imsmanifest.xml file and open it with a text editor

  4. Next you just need to update the contents of one of the XML tags to update to using SCORM 2004 4th Edition.

5. Save file
6. zip all files in the folder and upload it to your LMS.

Please let me know if this workaround works for you?  Hopefully we can add these as options in a future Camtasia release.

Hello,

We just published an update to Camtasia 2019 for Windows that adds SCORM 2004 3rd Edition and 2004 4th Edition as export options.

The mac version will have those same options in the near future.

Hello Ben, I don't know why I did not see both of your answers, and so couldn't test the work around proposed.I'm really happy that you finally decide to add latest Scorm version and will use Camtasia again, therefore. Many thanks for your update

Hey Ben,

Any update on a Mac version with SCORM 2004 3rd Edition capabilities? Or is there a current workaround? I followed your direction above, but don't see a "schemaversion" node in the imsmanifext.

Thanks
Matt

Hi Matt,

If you grab the latest update for the Camtasia 2019 (2019.0.5) for the Mac it now has support for SCORM 3rd and 4th edition.

Let me know if you run into any issues.
Thanks,
Ben

Hi Ben - does Camtasia 2019 for the Mac offer conversion options from SCORM to xAPI? Or would you have any direction on how I may find a converter tool?

Thanks!

Hi Matt,

Unfortunately Camtasia does not provide such tooling.  I've not looked into the technical details around xAPI either.

Sorry I couldn't be more of a help,
Ben

Hi Ben,

Is there any more info available on exporting to xAPI format? I have a client who's requesting a TinCan xAPI format for their LMS for metrics on course views/completions. Is there a similar Camtasia SCORM format that can work like TinCan?

Thanks!
Matt

Hi Matt,

Unfortunately I don't have any new information at this time.  I have not had time to dive into the xAPI specifics yet.  It is something I hope to take a look at some point.  Camtasia SCORM output should provide "course views/completions".  Is SCORM not an option for your clients LMS?  I'm interested in what xAPI can provide that SCORM can not.

Sorry I didn't have better news,
Ben

Hi Ben, it seems indeed to pass without error to the 2004 4th version of Scorm but if you don't put a quiz and want just to use percent of video as a trigger for completion it doesn't work. Even setting 1% doesn't complete the course showing that the compatibility is not working. Seing the video percentage in a report is not enough. We have to be able to use it to activate completion or not. Can you help on the subject ? I posted a problem last week but did not get any answer from support (we have a maintenance contract).
Thanks

Hello emotta,

I'm sorry to hear this isn't working.  Are there any other logging data you can provide with the SCORM production from the LMS?  I do not have access to this LMS to test directly.  If you can get me access to test this directly it would really help.

@emotta,

We have just published a new version to our TechSmith Smart Player that may fix issues you are seeing.  If you are using Camtasia 2019 or 2020, then if you republish your SCORM production you should get this version of the TechSmith Smart Player (version 5.60.0).

If you want to verify the version:
1) Create a SCORM production that creates a folder and a zip file
2) Navigate to the folder on your drive.
3) Open the "scripts" folder, then open "techsmith-smart-player.min.js" in a text editor.
4) Right at the top of that file is the version number.

I'm looking for feedback to see if this improves your experience.

Thanks,
Ben

Hello Ben,

Same case as above. Our company is using SAP Success Factor  LMS and we've started using Camtasia 2019  to convert videos into a SCORM production.  The TechSmith Smart Player version is  5.60.0.

However , we  encounter issue with the completion status that is never marked as completed whatever  the  SCORM version used to publish the zip file.

Hello Sophie,

Sorry to hear you are still running into issues with the latest version.  If you don't mind can you answer a few questions that may help me get to the bottom of the issues you are seeing.

1) When you open our SCORM production in SAP Success Factor is it in a new window or embed (displayed) in the same page before opening it?
2) What are the viewing percentage you are setting your video to be marked complete within Camtasia?
3) Are you including any quiz questions in your videos?  If so are they marked as graded?
4) Are you seeing consistent behavior between different web browsers?

Thanks,
Ben

Hello Ben,

Thanks for your prompt reply. To answer your questions
1) it doesn't open in the new window. The video runs in the LMS user interface (see attached screen shot). Success factor is not supporting the new window opening unless it is forced from the content itself . There is no settings in Camtasia  that we know that could do it .
2)  We tried 100% and 80% none of them worked
3) no quiz question, just a straight mp4 video added to the timeline
4) we are using IE and Chrome  and we haven't noticed any differences.
Thanks for your assistance ,
Sophie

Hi Sophie,

Thank you for answering my questions.  The work I did should have improved the experience with how your LMS is using our SCORM video.

Do you have access to any logging the LMS provides for how our package is communicating through SCORM to the LMS?  Also for videos that you have set to to be watched 100% to be complete, what happens when you let the video play all the way through (do not skip ahead in the video) and get to the very end?  Does the LMS get directed to another page or give you any other type of messaging?

Hi Ben,

We've figured out the solution which is linked to SAP Success factor.

For video with no quiz, if you set the  completion to be 100% or any value when publishing the zip file, the LMS adds it automatically during the import in the Mastery Score of the content object.
So for 100%  to be watched , the  mastery score will be 100 . By removing this value or replacing it by 0 (you can doing it directly from the learning item), the system will properly mark the video as completed after viewing the complete video.

Thanks a lot  for your assistance :)

side bar ...

having start-of-play issues with videos that have lots of interactive content; have reported to tech support; can this be fixed?  seems like a SmartPlayer issue?
