Scrolling window capture doesn't work with PDF in version Snagit 10.

Hello,
I wanted to bring to your attention a problem that has surfaced since my company (OptumHealth) upgraded to Snagit 10. Prior to the upgrade you could capture an entire PDF document using the scrolling window capture. Now, when you try and use that on a PDF document the arrows don't appear like they do on a Web site. I know of at least 3 other people in my area that are impacted by this situation. We used this tool daily.

Any attempts to fix this issue would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Kathleen

Hello,
I don't know of a particular fix for this.. but, perhaps this might help:

In Snagit, click the Input down arrow and choose Advanced > Custom Scroll.

When you press the hotkey to take your capture, drag the region around the first PDF page and then click the down arrow button within the PDF reader. This will begin the scrolling capture.

I tried this on a few different PDFs and it seems to work fine.

Hope this helps,

Kelly

Hi Kelly,

I tried your suggestion but I got an error that read "Failed Scrolling Capture - unable to capture scrolling input (error #4)".

Hi Kelly and Kathleen,
I have tried the Advanced scrolling selection and get the same error as Kathleen.

Hi Debbie,
I'm sorry you are having trouble.
What version of Snagit are you using and what are you attempting to scroll? For example, a standalone PDF, a PDF in a browser, a protected PDF, etc?

Thanks for any more information.

Hi Kelly,
I've tried opening the PDF as a standalone PDF Adobe Reader X, and I also tried opening it in Internet Explorer 8. I am using SnagIt 10.0.0, build 788.

thanks!

Kathleen, if you want to submit a case through our website we can take a look at this for you. We do have problems with some scenarios- content viewed in Acrobat X, Firefox 4, and Internet Explorer 9 currently does not work for scrolling capture.

Visit http://techsmith.custhelp.com/app/uti... to open a case if you need further technical support.

Hi David,

I had previously submitted a technical issue and Nick Herber responded to tell me that it was a known issue. He also suggested I post my problem here. I currently have Adobe Acrobat 9 Pro. Thanks, Kathleen

Hi Kathleen,
Is it possible to send us your PDF via email? You can send to k.mullins@techsmith.com. We can perhaps try and see if there is a capture setting that will work for you.

Thanks,
Kelly

You can also try using an alternate PDF reader- on Windows, FoxIt has a good program, on the Mac we recommend trying Apple's Preview program.

It looks like the above link to the video no longer works.

Here is the process in text format:

1. In Snagit, in the Profile Settings area, click the Input down arrow and select Advanced > Custom Scroll.

2. Invoke the capture and drag the cursor to select a portion of the PDF from side-to-side.

3. Click on the scrolling down arrow on the PDF. The capture will begin scrolling.

With SnagIt 10, even a simple web page in Firefox 4.0 that has a vertical button, you cannot capture it below and above what is visible. With SnagIt 9, I had no problem at all capturing a scrolling web page. Now, the arrows do not show up to capture the scrolling web page!!

I have just tried the above fix that Kelly noted - it didn't work. However when I selected "Clipboard" in the Output mode it worked! - Running Adobe X with SnagIt 10

I cannot make this work either. I tried the 'advanced - custom' suggested above and got this error:

Incomplete scrolling capturee - error #16.

Susan - I've just tried this again and after a little bit of trial & error I think I've got it! - Settings should be Input = Custom Scroll ; Output = Clipboard.

Select the first part of the pdf that you want to copy and the orange box should appear around the section - then left click on the scroll button on the right hand side - once. The page should then scroll down automatically to the bottom of the pdf.

I just bought Snagit, and find that it has an error that has been going on 5 months. When is this problem supposed to be fixed with a patch?

Or is this going to be issued in another 7 months as Snagit 11?

Personally, I would just download the PDF and use it, rather than make a copy.

But the scrolling feature to capture a complete web pages with clickable hyperlinks is extremely important to me.

It concerns me that a problem with the scrolling page, with clickable hyperlinks, can go on so long without a fix. If this happens to capturing web pages, the software will be useless to me.

Can I rely upon Snagit to be able to capture long web pages, including the clickable hyperlinks?

BTW, I am trying to find a way to include the original URL that the copy of the web page comes from, so I can always return to the original, updated page. I have not been able to find a way yet. Can this be done?

Having expressed my concern about the future functionality, I can say that I am very pleased with Snagit thus far. It has done a great job for what I need.

Thanks!

Richard

Richard,
I just noticed that this thread has been marked "solved". I'm wondering if that means this will not get any official attention. People have been very nice to make suggestions but so far none of them have worked for me.

Susan I agree with your concern. I have tried all of these solutions and it sometimes works, most times doesn't. Using just the Custom Scroll setting I've gotten it to work on occasion. Using that and Copy to Clipboard, I get the following error message "Incomplete scrolling capture (error #0)". It's very temperamental, so they definitely shouldn't consider this issue "solved".

I found a work around. If you print your PDF to the snagit editor (mine is labeled Snagit 10 as a printer), it converts your PDF to a document that can be edited in the editor. Then, after modifying, save as PDF.
Hope this helps.

That worked, but only for 1 page.  I had multiple pages, but it only picked up the one page.  That will work for other things though so thanks!

Really unhappy. Had SnagIt 7, worked fine with my application, Checkpoint Provider-1 firewall management gui, aka, MDG.

Snagit 10, I have tried custom scroll, various combinations, but same result each time, Incomplete error message Error #0

Disappointed that a new version takes a step backward.

Running Win7 64 bit now, was WinXP SP2 and SP3 previously.

Adobe implements their Adobe Reader software in a way that often makes scrolling capture fail. There are some workarounds- custom scroll and the Snagit printer- posted in this thread.

As for other applications, the same methods may work; try a Custom Scroll or the Snagit Printer to see if you get better results.

Hi,

I have Mozilla Firefos and SnagIT 10. I am unable to use scrolling window.
Each time I want a scrollng window image, i shift to IE and capture, which is very frustrating.

Is SnagIT listening to their customers???

Hello Sumayya,

Snagit 10 should work fine when scrolling Firefox, please check the version of Snagit that you have as there have been 10.0.1 and 10.0.2 releases, both have bug fixes in them to keep scrolling working on Firefox.

If you have the latest 10.0, there are some add-ons that cause scrolling to not work at all.

Try taking a look at this article for some things to check :

If that doesn't help you get scrolling working in Firefox, please contact our technical support dept : http://techsmith.custhelp.com/app/uti...

I tried this and got a "Failed scrolling capture...Unable to capture scrolling input (error #4). Consult the help file for more information and tips.

The help file didn't help. This issue is certainly not solved.

Similar problems in 11.1.0 with Firefox 18.0.2 and IE8. Both browsers failed to display the scroll arrow. Both browsers failed to capture all data with custom window. Both browsers through the Error #4 when the data in the window was more than one page.

Fix for me, Google Chrome.

I was having this issue too with trying to capture a pdf opened inside a browser. Was finally able to get it working with the custom scroll.

After selecting the area you need and upon releasing the mouse, you have to make sure you precisely click the down arrow in the page just once, and it will automatically begin repeatedly clicking the down arrow button capturing the selection you made.

Using Snagit 10 in IE 9

Hope this helps.

Mike,

I'm sorry that SnagIt isn't working to capture a PDF for you.

Have you tried using the SnagIt printer output to do the capture?

To use it you just print the PDF and make sure that you select the SnagIt 11 printer.

Thanks,

Hi Adam,

I tried printing to the SnagIt printer and though the dialogue box appears and the file processes, no output appears in the Editor.  Do I need to retrieve the file from a specific folder to view it?

When I tried the custom scroll, I receive a variety of error messages - here is the latest one:

This is somewhat urgent as I am working with a long PDF that I need to manipulate/call out in SnagIt.  Any help you could offer would be much appreciated!
