select object in a back lying track and move object on the canvas

I would like to be able to select an object on a track that is "behind" other objects on front lying tracks, then be able to drag the object with the mouse on the canvas, regardless of what is in front of it. If I've missed a way of doing this, I hope this thread may serve as clarification to other users.

(I understand it not being logical to click on an object that has another in front of it, but it would seem the intention of the user is clear that, if they select an object on a track, they wish to manipulate that selected object, which may include moving it on the canvas.)

Good idea!

Here's a slow workaround: Click the lock button on the upper tracks. When you click on the overlapping objects, the locked layers will not be selected. Slow, but it works!

Yup, you can do this. Select the object via the timeline (like you described), then use the center handle- the one that looks like a circle with an X in it, to drag it around, like so:
