I am an new SnagIt 12 user (a new to SnagIt user period). I want to select an object to edit the properties. When I use the Selection Tool, I get an area and my only options seem to be to delete, fill or otherwise work on that area. This should be very basic and easy. How do I select an object - not an area?
The selection tool, as you found out, is designed to select areas of a capture. To select object you click on the object. Use the Shift key to select multiple objects while clicking on them. However, keep in mind that if you save a capture in anything other that the .SNAG format this will flatten objects and will make them no longer able to be selected.
I just want to select a shape and move it elsewhere on the image. I added text and a shape. When I try to move them, the selection tool shows up with lines that follow my arrow. I do not want that. I want to simply move an object. I have used Snagit for years and the v13 is so incredibly frustrating to use that I end up going back to my Snagit 11 version. Why is the select and move option - and I hope there is one - so user unfriendly?
As to why it's unfriendly, I have to say I do agree with that assessment. I generally have much better luck selecting whatever object I am trying to select if I first select it among the tools. For example, if I want to select a step to move it, it helps if I first click and select the Step tool in my little toolbar.

As with most of the new UI features in Snagit, this has become convoluted and borderline none-functional because of their unnecessary new focus on objects. Try flattening out the image (right-click > Flatten All). Then you should be able to select and move a segment of the image. To move more segments, you will probably need to repeat the function again. This is what happens when a product becomes too mature and the product managers don't know what to do with it any more.
