Select Area to Record Behavior Change

I record a virtual machine when I record screencasts. It's a Hyper-V VM. In versions of Camtasia prior to 8.0.3, I could choose the "Select Area to Record" option, mouse over the viewport of the VM connection window, and the selection tool would snap into place--giving me a perfectly sized and positioned recording area for my VM.

As of 8.0.3, the "select area" tool ignores the VM connection window and only wants to select the full screen of my monitor. I have relied on this feature since Camtasia 7, and I plan on reverting back to 8.0.1 or 8.0.2 to get that functionality back.

Hi Jeremy,

I'm sorry that you're having trouble with Recorder!

I looked into this issue and it appears to be specific to Windows 8. I was able to reproduce the bug using Camtasia Studio 8.0.2 and 8.0.3 on Windows 8. However, I can't reproduce the bug on Windows 7 using 8.0.2 or 8.0.3. If you've recently upgraded to Windows 8, rolling back to 8.0.2 or 8.0.1 will likely not help in this scenario (8.0.1 may actually make it worse as we fixed a number of Windows 8 specific bugs in 8.0.2). However, if you're not on Windows 8 please let me know and I can work with you on what may have caused this behavior to be specific to Hyper-V VMs.

A possible work around could be to use the click and drag functionality of our Select Area to Record feature. It's not as quick as snapping to app windows but you can get similar behavior from it.

I've opened a bug and we'll do our best to address it in a future release. Thanks a ton for reporting this and again, I apologize that you ran into it! Let me know if you have any other questions.

Thanks for the reply, Brad!

That's interesting that it didn't work for you in earlier versions; it had worked for me since I started using Windows 8 RTM back in August (although I did have issues in the RC). The only change I think I've made to my system was the 8.0.3 update; I'll review my Win8 updates and investigate them.

I think I'll still revert back to a version prior to 8.0.3 for testing purposes. The click and drag is certainly a work around (that's what I ended up using), but I still had to give it a few tries before I got it exactly right. Displaying the dimension while dragging would be a nice addition (I looked for dimensions, but didn't notice any until after the selection was made).

Thanks again!

I have this issue as well after upgrading to Windows 8. What's the ETA for a fix on this?
