selection tool not working consistently

I routinely have problems getting the selection tool working when objects are involved.

What I expect to happen, is I place simplify boxes and arrows down, then use the selection tool to "Cut Out" a section to move elsewhere

What actually happens is it grabs one of my simplifys and moves it around, completely ignoring the selection tool.

Snag it seems to prioritize grabbing an object over using the selection tool to create a cut out, even when I've tried explicitly unselecting my objects by clicking out of the area (in the "no mans land" outside the image) and then choosing the selection tool style.

Is this just user error, or are other people having issues using it too?

To work around this issue, I have to manually save, exit the editor entirely, then reopen the image from scratch

Hi chrisr,
Can you tell me if you are using the Auto Populate option for Simplify, or if you are drawing out each line separately?
When I use the Auto option, I can use the Selection tool at will without ANY of of the Simplify objects being interfered with.
I am wondering if you are adding the Simplify row objects individually, when you go to use the selection tool, you are able to select those as individual objects? So, moving the cursor over those while in Select mode will highlight each one?
Can you do a test on this using the Auto Populate option and see what happens?
Thanks!Kelly

Also you could try rightclick > flatten all and then ctrl c (copy) whatever and just do ctrl z (undo) when you’re finished and you’re back where you were in snaggy.

I am creating most of my simplify objects by hand, the auto detection isn't quite on par yet, and I find the color selection ugly (I'd rather all the boxes start the same grey, then let me chose which I want to change to appropriate color, or use the color of the text it's covering)

Flatten might work, it's just odd to me I have to do that by hand

So, when you use the Simplify Tool in manual mode, you are creating individual object that are really no different from other shapes or callouts. Therefore, if they are close together in lines, you will need to hover over those to see where the boundary lines are before attempting to make a selection or cutout. If you hit one of the boundaries of the object, you will turn that feature on since Snagit thinks you want to select it and work with it.

To get around this, you can flatten all the objects. Just right-click on the image and choose Flatten All from the menu.

Also, maybe you could retry using the Auto feature? I know you said the colors weren't what you wanted, but you can choose your own colors. Also, there is a Lock feature that will lock your objects into place for you. And, if the object alignment or placement isn't correct using the Auto feature, you can quickly reposition or resize the individual objects.

That's not the problem.  The problem is when I'm using the "Select" tool (more of a cut out tool really), instead of prioritizing letting me put down the cut out lines, it overrides the tool and grabs objects instead, directly ignoring both the purpose of the tool and the mode I've explicitly requested.

Perhaps it's an issue with vernacular?  When I choose "Select tool", I'm not asking to be able to select objects, I'm asking to be able to CUT OUT a portion of my image and move it elsewhere, typically because I want to rearrange multiple parts in preparation for a crop.

Perhaps that tool could have a checkbox for "freeze objects"?

Please post the snag image you are working with somewhere we can download it so we can duplicate whatever you are talking about.

My selection tool works perfectly no matter what is on the workspace.

BTW,
FYI when you save it and reopen it as you said above that is the same thing we have been trying to tell you about "flattening" it.

When you save/exit that flattens the image the same as when you rightclick > flatten all.
